Chapter 43
I really want to know how James will treat Amelia after he finds out what she's really like.
James stayed silent for a long time, his deep eyes like the ocean.
I don't know what he's thinking, and I'm not interested in knowing. I pulled over a chair and sat down far from the bed, taking out my phone to play with.
The hospital room was very quiet. All you could hear was our breathing.
James suddenly spoke: "Don't tell Grandma about this."
A chill rose from the bottom of my heart, mixed with deep disappointment.
Of course, it's like this again.
No matter what wrong Amelia does, James will stand by her side without hesitation and cover for her.
It's always been this way, without a single exception.
I felt hollow inside, all my strength gone in an instant.
So tired!
My face was expressionless, my voice flat: "Why would I help her?"
This is ridiculous.
Amelia targets me at every turn and even caused my child's death. Why would James think I'd agree to help Amelia hide this?
James's restrained voice sounded: "I'm asking you as a favor."
I stood up, looking down at him. James, who's always so high and mighty, is actually willing to humble himself for another woman.
"You're asking me, so I have to agree? Why should I?"
"James, I used to love you, so you could hurt me and use me without any restraint. But now, we're about to get divorced. What makes you think you can still order me around?"
I'm not an idiot. Helping Amelia hide the drugging incident does me no good at all. I won't help.
James's thin lips parted: "One million dollars."
One million dollars, what a generous offer!
I crossed my arms and laughed disdainfully: "You think I need that million dollars?"
As ZeroSpecter, one million dollars is just pocket change in my account. I couldn't care less about it.
James's eyes narrowed slightly, with a scrutinizing and suspicious look, his words contemptuous: "Right, now that you've latched onto Andrew, why would you care about my million dollars?"
I heard the sarcasm in his words, but I wasn't angry. I just went along with what he said: "That's right. Andrew is not only generous to me, but he's also better than you in every way."
James clenched his fists, making a sound.
I followed the sound and looked at his hand.
I knew he was very angry right now.
After all, someone like James—his things, even if he doesn't like them, he absolutely won't let others touch them.
But what does that have to do with me? We're about to get divorced.
I don't need to live my life watching his moods anymore.
If it weren't for Indigo, who's been good to me, I could make room for him and Amelia right now.
I didn't want to see his sour face: "Rest well. I'm leaving."
James's icy voice sounded behind me: "Sophia, don't forget, we're not divorced yet, and you promised me that in front of Grandma, we'd act like a loving couple. If you leave now and Grandma's people find out and tell her, what will she think?"
Hearing this, I stopped in my tracks.
What he said wasn't unreasonable. Since I agreed to work with him to keep Indigo stable, I couldn't go back on my word.
But I also didn't want to stay here watching him and Amelia being all lovey-dovey, making myself miserable.
After thinking it over, to avoid being disgusted by them, I decided to go home.
"I'll explain to Grandma."
Leaving that sentence behind, I left without looking back.
When I got home, I went to check on Indigo. Seeing her sleeping peacefully, I went back to my room to rest.
James and Amelia came back together the next morning.
When Indigo saw James and Amelia return together, her face immediately darkened.
"Last night, you two were together?"
Amelia looked timid: "Grandma, last night Sophia disappeared somewhere, so I had to stay and take care of James."
"Indigo, Amelia meant well." James also spoke up for Amelia.
Indigo snorted: "You must have said something unpleasant and driven Sophia away. Instead of trying to make things right with Sophia, you're fooling around with Amelia. What do you think Sophia feels seeing this?"
"I don't know what spell Amelia has cast on you, making you so confused that you don't even want your own wife anymore."
"Grandma, Amelia was just being kind in taking care of me."
Just like in the past, James stood in front of Amelia like a hero, protecting her from any harm.
Standing upstairs watching this scene, my eyes were full of mockery.
Seeing Indigo's face getting darker and darker, I slowly walked downstairs.
"Grandma..."
"Grandma."
My voice and James's sounded at the same time.
Indigo turned to look at me, smiling: "Sophia, come here. I specifically told Juliet to have someone make these for you. They're all dishes you love."
I showed a bright smile and sat beside Indigo: "Thank you, Grandma."
James and Amelia, standing to the side, were completely ignored by Indigo.
Amelia clenched her back teeth, a small bulge appearing on her face.
I glanced at her. Can't she stand this already?
How will she get through the coming days?
I curved my lips slightly and said gratefully, "Amelia, thank you for being understanding last night about me not feeling well, letting me come home to rest while you stayed at the hospital to help me take care of James."
My response was completely unexpected to Amelia. She was totally unprepared and didn't know how to respond, her expression frozen.
Indigo was suspicious: "Is that so?"
I nodded without hesitation: "Yes, Grandma. Amelia is very good to me. She's very understanding."
Indigo knew I was well-behaved and wouldn't lie, so she believed me and didn't probe further.
"Alright, why are you still standing there? Sit down and eat."
I looked at James and Amelia and deliberately brought up last night: "Grandma, last night James was drugged..."
"Sophia!" Amelia exclaimed.
"Amelia, what's wrong?" I looked at her leisurely, my lips curved.
Amelia's voice trembled a bit: "Aren't you feeling unwell? Don't you want to go upstairs and rest some more?"
Indigo was displeased: "You haven't even eaten yet, and you're telling Sophia to go rest. What are you thinking?"
"Also, why are you talking to Sophia so loudly? What if you scare her?"
Amelia's body trembled: "I'm sorry, Grandma. I didn't mean to. I'm just worried Sophia isn't feeling well."
I drank two sips of porridge and calmly advised, "Grandma, it's okay. Amelia means well."
Amelia smiled awkwardly: "Sophia, I'm glad you understand my good intentions toward you."
I couldn't help but laugh inside. Amelia really knows how to put on an act. With her acting skills, not going into entertainment would be a waste of talent.
I didn't bring up that topic again.
Breakfast passed uneventfully.
Throughout the meal, I had no interaction with James. From the corner of my eye, I saw Indigo call James over.
I didn't care and didn't ask. I withdrew my gaze and went to the study.
Before long, James came up with a bowl of soup and placed it in front of me. I was focused on my computer and didn't look at him.
"This is the tonic soup I had the servants make for you."
I acknowledged with a sound.
James was angry but still patiently apologized to me: "About last night, I'm sorry. I misunderstood you."
Only then did I glance at him: "How rare, you actually apologize to me."
James pressed his lips together: "Last night was an accident. Let's just pretend nothing happened."
I finally understood. James especially humbled himself to apologize to me, completely for Amelia's sake.
He's like this again.
He's always like this. Whenever it involves Amelia, no matter what happens, he'll brush it off lightly.
