Chapter 42
After hearing my words, Indigo's face flushed with anger. "Who dares to do such a dirty thing right under my nose?"
I was afraid Indigo would get so upset she'd end up in the hospital again like last time, so I quickly stood beside her and gently patted her back.
"Grandma, don't get angry. Since that person did it, they must have left some clues. We'll definitely get to the bottom of this."
Actually, when James said it was Amelia who brought him the soup, I already had a suspect in mind.
But I had no proof right now, and even if I said it, no one would believe me.
Amelia came in crying and threw herself on James, sobbing with worry: "James, how did it get this serious? You're even in the hospital?"
James said softly, "I'm fine."
Like an outsider, I coldly watched this scene of their affection, my heart completely calm.
Unfortunately, even if I didn't look for trouble, trouble would find me.
Amelia wiped away her tears and scolded me: "Sophia, even if you're upset that James doesn't pay enough attention to you, you can't do something like this to hurt his body."
"The Smith family only has James as its pillar now. If he collapses, what will we do?"
Amelia pinned all the blame on me, implying that I was dissatisfied with James's cold treatment and that's why I drugged him.
Her behavior of slandering others really made me want to laugh, and I did laugh out loud, but with heavy sarcasm.
"You're accusing me of drugging him without any evidence. Did you see it with your own eyes? Why don't you ask James whether he's the one who doesn't want to sleep with me, or I'm the one who doesn't want to sleep with him?"
"Sophia, I..."
Before she could finish, ignoring James's dark expression, I cut her off directly: "By the way, James said you brought the soup. So don't I have every reason to suspect that you're the one who drugged it?"
A flash of panic crossed Amelia's eyes. She blinked and squeezed out a few tears: "Sophia, how can you say that about me? I'm James's elder brother's wife... How could I possibly do such a thing to him?"
I stared straight at her, not letting her dodge: "I'm his wife too. We're husband and wife, one unit. If something happens to him, what good does it do me? Why would you suspect me?"
Amelia stammered: "Maybe, you..."
Indigo already didn't like Amelia, and seeing her pin these baseless accusations on me made her scold Amelia with disgust.
"Enough. They're husband and wife. Sophia has no reason to harm James. Stop making trouble here."
"I'll have someone investigate this matter thoroughly when I get back. If I find out who did it, I won't let that person off."
Hearing Indigo's cold tone, Amelia's body couldn't help but tremble.
She thought no one saw her reaction, but she didn't know that all her movements were caught by my eyes.
Looks like her plan failed!
Indigo took my hand, somewhat self-reproachful: "It's all my fault. If I hadn't done a good deed that turned bad, that person wouldn't have found an opportunity."
I collected myself and comforted her gently: "Grandma, this isn't your fault. Don't overthink it."
"It's late now, and you just got out of the hospital. Your body is still weak. Let me have Juliet take you back to rest."
I gave Juliet a look, and she tactfully supported Indigo: "Let's go back first. Let the young people stay here and watch over him."
Indigo was indeed tired and left with Juliet's help.
The hospital room was suddenly left with just me, James, and Amelia.
Amelia acted like a devoted wife, busying herself and attentively serving James.
She'd give James water one moment, then tuck in his blanket the next.
Meanwhile, I crossed my arms and leaned lazily to the side like an outsider, my heart dead and unable to stir up any ripples.
"James, I'll go buy you some things."
Amelia got up to leave. Just as I was about to follow her out, James called out: "Sophia, where are you going?"
I replied flatly: "How strange. You never used to care where I went, but now that we're getting divorced, you suddenly care."
The veins on James's forehead twitched. "Sophia, is it necessary to bring up old grievances?"
"You did those things, so I can't mention them?" I didn't back down at all, confronting James head-on.
James never considered my feelings, so why should I think about his?
James's chest heaved violently. I don't know what he was thinking, but he sneered: "Sophia, playing hard to get—what a scheme. I won't be fooled by you."
I'm speechless. I can't be bothered to say anything more to this brain-dead James.
I turned and walked away quickly. My phone rang in my pocket, and I had just taken it out to answer.
I saw Amelia standing ahead. She stepped forward and blocked my way: "You're not needed here. What are you still doing here?"
I put my phone back in my pocket and said with amusement, "I'm James's wife. If I'm not here, where should I be?"
Amelia's bright red lips moved, her voice shrill: "Wife? You're just a homewrecker who stole someone else's nest. You don't deserve it!"
"Whether I deserve it or not, the fact that I'm James's wife is set in stone. And you're just his elder brother's wife. No matter how unwilling you are to accept your status, you have to admit it."
Amelia was so provoked by me that her eyes turned red. She swung the things in her hand at me. I dodged to the side, precisely grabbed her hand, and restrained her so she couldn't move.
"Amelia, tonight's incident was your doing, wasn't it?"
Amelia's eyes flickered uncertainly, not daring to meet my gaze: "I don't know what you're talking about!"
"What a shame. Even though you schemed so hard, you still couldn't get what you wanted. You just became my stepping stone."
Thinking about how her plans had been repeatedly ruined by me, Amelia flew into a rage.
That made sense.
If it weren't for me, she would have been with James long ago and would be the Smith family's only young mistress.
She wouldn't be like now, still being compared to me by Indigo.
"Sophia, so what if I became your stepping stone? James doesn't love you. His heart will always lean toward me. You'll forever be my defeated opponent."
I said casually, "Oh, so you're admitting you were behind tonight?"
"So what if it was me?"
Amelia's face turned red with anger: "It's all your fault. If it weren't for you, I would already be James's woman tonight, and he would have made up his mind to divorce you and be with me."
"Since you like him so much, just take him. He's just garbage anyway."
My indifferent attitude made Amelia's face look ugly.
"Sophia, if you really don't care as you say, why are you still clinging to James?"
I smiled carelessly: "Don't worry, before long, I'll be far away from James and never get involved in your mess again."
If it weren't for Indigo, I would have left long ago.
Indigo was recovering well. Maybe I'd be free soon.
I let go of Amelia's hand and returned to the hospital room, my eyes full of amusement.
James's expression must be quite spectacular right now.
After all, good people like me are rare these days.
I was really looking forward to seeing James's reaction. After all, before this, he'd always said Amelia was innocent and pitiful.
He said I was scheming and vicious.
That I couldn't compare to her.
Now, who was the hypocritical one was self-evident.
Amelia probably didn't know yet that James already knew her true face.
Thinking about the drama to come, I felt inexplicably happy.
I looked at James with a half-smile.
