Chapter 6 - Ginger

Chapter 6 - Ginger
Ginger's P.O.V.

I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst. The man lying on the air mattress is my mate. I'm positive because I felt the mate sparks when I touched him, and I picked up his scent as soon as we walked into the house. I haven't told anyone because I'm scared he's not going to make it.

I push my dark red hair out of my face and hold his hand. Yes, my name is Ginger, and I have red hair. I know it's not very creative, but oh well. I was a five-year-old orphan with no name when I saw an episode of Gilligan's Island. Ginger had red hair like me, so I started telling everyone my name was Ginger, and it stuck.

I look down at my mate, and my pulse races as I take his hand. He's handsome with short, dark brown hair and a face that looks like it was chiseled to perfection. A tear escapes as I stare at him. Please don't let him die before we even have a chance to meet each other. I have been waiting so long for my mate.

My parents abandoned me when I was about two, and I was raised in human foster homes for part of my life. When I was twelve, a man in one of those homes attempted to crawl into my bed. I stabbed him in the eye with a pencil and ran away. That was ten years ago, and last I heard, they were still looking for me.

"Are you okay?"  Anya mindlinks me. I glance at where she sits next to another man, looking over his wounds.

"No. This man is my mate, but I don't want to say anything. What if he doesn't live long enough to meet me? I'm scared to lose him even though I don't know him."   I lightly touch his cheek, and his eyes flutter. I hope that means he can feel me.

"Jordan says his name is Shane, and he's a hawk."  I look up at Anya in disbelief. I would laugh if I didn't feel ready to break down. A hawk and a bunny; that sounds like a bad joke.

"Thank you. Is there any news from Lindy?"   I can't take my eyes off Shane. I like that name. Please don't leave me, Shane. I need you. I need to feel something other than the fear of being alone.

"She and Dayan are almost here. She said he's her mate, and he's a lion. I guess they ran into some trouble at the storage unit. Lindy said she'll explain when she gets here."  Wow, four of us are mated to misfits. I wonder if there are any more mates here. I hear the sound of approaching bikes and sigh in relief. Lindy and I graduated from nursing school together, so we're pretty close. I can't wait to tell her I met my mate too.

When she walks in, she quickly passes out the medical supplies. We begin hooking the men up to IV fluids and giving them the activated charcoal. I look at Shane's wounds and notice they're starting to heal. It's working. When I touch his abdomen, where one of the wounds is almost closed up, I hear a gasp. I look at his face and see his dark blue eyes looking back at me. Shane tries to sit up, but I shake my head.

"Just rest. You're going to be okay." I move up closer to his head while he stares at me.

"Am I dead? Are you an angel?" I smile and shake my head.

"You're alive. I'm Ginger, one of the Biker Bunnies and a nurse." I reply. He reaches over and takes my hand. The sparks fill my body, but I look away.

"You forgot the most important thing," he says gruffly. I turn to look at him in confusion.

"What's that?" He slowly sits up.

"You're my mate." I bite my lip nervously. I can't take my eyes off his, and my breathing gets heavier.

"Yes, I am. Why don't you lie back down, and we can talk about that later?" I try to help him lie down, but he turns to sit on the side of the air mattress. I hold on to his IV so he doesn't rip it out of his arm.

"No way am I lying down like injured roadkill while my mate takes care of me. I'm fine. I just have one question." I slowly meet his eyes.

"Okay." Shane takes my hand and pulls me so I'm kneeling between his thighs, and we're face to face.

"Are you okay being mated to a hawk?" he asks softly. I glance around and notice the other men waking up. No one is paying attention to us, even though we're in a room full of bunnies and misfits. When I meet his eyes, I can barely speak.

"Yes, I'm okay with it. Are you?" I hold my breath while I wait for his answer.

"I don't think there's anything more beautiful than a redheaded bunny. I think I'll let you nurse me back to health. I don't know what is sexier, a woman in leather or wearing a sexy nurse uniform." Shane pulls me closer so he can put his arms around me. He's so big and strong that I feel like he is wrapped around my whole body.

"You know nurses wear scrubs, not whatever you're thinking about." He smirks at me and rubs his hands over my back.

"I'm sure we can get you one. In fact, I don't think I'm as well as I thought. Maybe I'll feel better if you get the costume and do a full head-to-toe assessment to make sure everything is in working order." My face is on fire when I hear a few chuckles nearby. I forgot we weren't alone. I try to move away from him, but he doesn't let me go.

"Don't hop away, Ginger, I'm not going to bite you." He leans forward to whisper in my ear. "Unless you want me to, that is. I wouldn't mind marking every inch of your body."

"Have you been with anyone else?" I ask, trying to ignore what he said. Shane kisses my cheek, and I bite my lip to keep from moaning in delight from the sparks.

"One of the rules we have as misfits is to wait for our mates. Have you been with any other man?" His hold on me tightens.

"We bunnies have the same rule. I haven't been with anyone." Shane's hold loosens slightly, and he smiles.

"Good. I'd hate to have to kill anyone who got the chance to touch you before I did." Out of all the bunnies, I'm the shyest and quietest. However, I feel like shoving Shane onto the air mattress and having my way with him. Maybe soon, but not while there are so many witnesses.

Bram's P.O.V.

I don't like working with incompetent wolf packs, but I need men. It's time those damn bunnies are killed once and for all. Everyone thinks they're a bunch of sweethearts, but I know the truth.

I'm a black bear and was the head of a bear biker gang. We were one of the gangs that actually acted like a gang, not like the weak bunnies or misfits. When some of my men were poisoned, I went to the bunnies for help. They refused because we weren't what they considered good men. The men who had been poisoned died, and now the bunnies are going to die. The rest of my men ran away, scared that whoever poisoned our gang would get them, too.

I look at the men in Doug's pack, and they look decent enough, but they're not bears. Hopefully, they'll be good enough to take out the bunnies, all but Delaine. That little bunny is mine.
