CHAPTER 99
The Lie She Told
After getting off the phone Alexa's breathing turned erratic and she got anxious wondering where she was going to get the money she promised the person who called.
There was no way she had any more on her because her last paycheck from the coffee shop had been given to Priscilla for upkeep so she was currently broke.
"How am I going to get $1000 now?" Alexa mumbled, and she bit her lips anxiously. She does not know who to call because she remembers her friends are jobless like her and she could not think of anyone to call.
"There is no one I can turn to…except him," Alexa mumbled when she remembered asking Maurice for money and he promised to give her.
'Maybe if I ask him now and tell him that I want to use it for my mother's medical bills..maybe he can give it to me' Alexa mumbled and she picked up the phone before her emotions wavered.
She doesn't know if the man is going to agree, but the gamble was worth it after all since she doesn't have an alternative.
The phone rang once with no attention and Alexa wanted to give up already getting ashamed of asking, but she decided to try the second time.
Alexa called the second time and the call was picked.
"Hello," Alexa heard the other side of the phone saying, and she froze momentarily hearing his deep baritone voice from the other side of the phone.
"Are you not speaking?" The man urged and that jolted Alexa out of her reverie and she gulped her saliva in fear.
"Erm erm," she cleared her voice before she started talking because she felt that the man's voice was more melodious than hers.
"I am calling you to tell you something," Alexa says shyly, forgetting the urgency of the situation she was in. "I can guess," the man said urging her to say something
"Actually…I…it's about the money I asked you to borrow from me, is it available now!" Alexa asked, and she feared that the man was going to ask for what she was going to do with it.
"Oh, about that, I already left a card for you in the room, I am sorry I forgot to mention it," Maurice said and Alexa gasped in excitement hearing that.
"What! You kept a card for me in the room already…thank you so much!" Alexa exclaimed happily and before the man could say another word she hung up.
She was so overwhelmed with happiness that she forgot to ask the man where he left the card.
Alexa was relieved that she could finally get herself out of the trouble she got herself in, but she bit her lips seeing that she just forgot an important detail.
"Oh, I don't know where he left the card," she said and she knew she could not call back to ask so it was only left to her to look for it.
Alexa looked around the room trying to find the card that Maurice says that he left for her and she sighed, finally setting her eyes on it. It was lying elegantly on the cabinet and it was visible to her.
She quickly picked it up, and she looked at it like it was her savior or something like that.
She was too occupied to notice the color of the card she was holding and she immediately got dressed ready to go to the bank to withdraw before evening.
"I just hope whatever nonsense this man is up to is going to stop when I hand this over," Alexa says, and she leaves the room.
****************************
The stormy sky was littered with stars and the moon was not that bright that night as the people in the city went about their activities.
Maurice stepped out of his car holding a fruit basket and he stepped into the hospital with a curious gaze lingering behind him probably wondering what an outstanding man like him was doing in a place like that.
Maurice decided to check on Alexa's mother to fulfill the promise he made the other time he came, but he decided to call Alexa first.
He talked to her in the evening when he saw that she had withdrawn some money from the account which he deduced was for her mother, and she told him that he was either her.
He dialed her number and the call was picked up at once like she was expecting him to call.
"What! You called?" She asked surprised and Maurice chuckled.
"Where are you?" Maurice asked as he walked through the hospital hallway wanting to surprise Alexa at the hospital.
He knew that she told him about going to visit her mother in the hospital and that was the reason he was also there so that he could accompany her and also bond with his mother-in-law.
"I told you in the morning…I am in the hospital," Alexa says anxiously, but Maurice did not catch that.
"Oh really then you would be shocked to see where I am too," Maurice says, opening the door to Alexa's mother's room and the sight he met surprised him.
He saw Alexa's mother sitting on the bed, with Priscilla sitting beside her. There was someone else in the room but the person was not Alexa but Jason, her colleague from the coffee shop.
Maurice's steps halted and he went silent forgetting that he was on a call.
"What! Where are you now?" Alexa asked at the other end of the phone and Maurice's eyes twitched hearing her voice so he decided to ask a question.
"Where did you say you are again, Alexa? No lies," Maurice added and he heard the phone go silent and he noticed the people in the room were looking at him weirdly, but he didn't care he needed to make sure that he wasn't wrong.
"Why are you asking the same question? I already told you where I am," Alexa finally says over the phone, but Maurice just chuckles.
"No, I am just making sure that I am not wrong," Maurice says.
"Ohh, I told you that I am with my mom in the hospital…or did you want me to put her on?" Maurice heard Alexa ask, and his heart tightened hearing her voice and a word rang in Maurice's head.
Lies!
"No, you don't need to put her on..we don't want to disturb her," Maurice says getting off the phone while looking at Alexa's mom.
'Your mother is here Alexa so which mother were you referring to?' Maurice mumbled and his gaze darkened when he locked eyes with Jason.
'What an eyesore!'
