Chapter 298 Everything Is Over
Chapter 298 Everything Is Over
"No, Seraphine and Vivian aren't cut from the same cloth. She doesn't even care that she saved my life."
Alexander thought back to the way Seraphine had treated him, to her beautiful face, and felt an odd pang of disappointment.
"You know, for a moment there, I really hoped she'd tell me she wanted me to marry her. What do Charles and Jason have that I don't? Why would she marry Jason and Charles, but not me?"
"Mr. Smith, what are you saying?"
His assistant's eyes went wide, staring at Alexander like he'd grown a second head.
Seraphine not wanting to use the debt to latch onto him should be a good thing.
So why was Alexander disappointed?
"Forget it. I'm probably losing my mind."
Alexander pinched the bridge of his nose, pushing all those thoughts away, and headed toward his car with his assistant in tow.
---
"Seraphine, how are you holding up? There's something I need to tell you."
Meanwhile, Seraphine had no idea what Alexander had said to his assistant after they parted ways.
Once he left, she threw herself back into work.
Before she knew it, night had fallen.
At eight o'clock that evening, Madison walked into her office holding a folder and settled into the chair across from her.
"This is about Mr. Romanov."
Seraphine's hand jerked, tearing a hole in her design sketch.
"Go ahead. What is it you need to tell me?"
After a long silence, she finally pulled herself together and looked up at Madison.
"You told Mr. Romanov that if he wanted to atone, he should kill his mistress and his bastard children first, then end his own life. Mr. Romanov did it."
Madison wet her lips and placed the folder in front of Seraphine.
A week ago, Richard had killed his mistress and the children she'd borne him. Then he'd drawn up a will, leaving everything he owned to Seraphine.
Finally, he'd jumped to his death.
Madison paused here, studying Seraphine's expression. Once she was sure Seraphine was stable enough, she finished.
"Inside that folder is documentation of all Mr. Romanov's assets. His private attorney and I have already completed all the legal procedures. All you need to do is sign the paperwork, and you'll inherit a fortune worth over a hundred billion dollars."
"Also, on top of those documents, there's a letter. Mr. Romanov wrote it before he died. He said you could choose to read it, or you could just throw it away."
---
Seraphine closed her eyes. It took several tries before she could drag herself out of the shock of Richard's death.
She took a deep breath, slowly opened the folder Madison had given her, and pulled out the letter.
[Savannah—or maybe I should call you Seraphine. By the time you read this, I'll already be gone.]
[After I saw you, every time I closed my eyes, I saw you and your mother. I had people look into it. Everything you told me that day was true.]
[That vicious woman killed your mother and has been hunting you ever since. All these years I couldn't find you—that was her doing too.]
[Once I knew the truth, I kept asking myself: if I hadn't betrayed your mother back then, would she still be alive? Would you have been spared all that suffering?]
[If you'd grown up in the Romanov Family, no one would have dared look down on you when you married Charles.]
[It's all my fault.]
[I destroyed your life and your mother's. I don't know how to make it up to you both. All I can do is give you my life.]
[Seraphine, I don't expect you to forgive me after I'm gone. I just hope what I'm leaving you can be a safety net, so you never have to feel inferior about money again.]
Richard's letter wasn't long. It ended there.
Seraphine didn't know how to describe what she felt reading it. All she knew was that her chest ached.
It was as if a nail that had been driven into her heart for years had suddenly been pulled out.
Now her heart was covered in blood, but once the wound healed, she'd be whole again.
That nail buried in her heart wouldn't randomly stab her anymore.
"Madison, thank you."
After a couple of minutes, Seraphine found her voice again.
She folded the letter and looked into Madison's eyes, her voice low and hoarse.
"Thank you for handling everything before telling me what Richard did. And thank you for passing along his message."
"You don't need to thank me. I just did what I was supposed to do."
Madison stood, walked over, and pulled her into a hug, gently patting her back.
"Seraphine, it's all over now. From here on out, every day of your life will be better than today."
Seraphine blinked, resting in Madison's embrace as tears slid down her cheeks.
---
"Seraphine, Charles is here."
Time flew. Before she knew it, the day of Seraphine and Jason's wedding had arrived.
That morning, Seraphine got to the hotel venue early.
While she was getting her makeup done, Jason walked in with Andy and sat down beside her.
"Charles says he wants to see you. He promised me he won't cause any trouble today. Do you want to see him? If not, I'll have security throw him out right now."
"No need. Today's our wedding day. I don't want you getting into it with anyone."
Seraphine thought it over for a moment, then stood and walked out of the makeup room.
Charles was standing right outside the door. When he saw Seraphine, he lowered his gaze and gave a bitter smile.
"Seraphine, you look beautiful today. Congratulations. Jason's a good man. Marrying him, you'll be happy. As for me, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately."
"I've done too many things that hurt you. You were right—I don't have the right to try and win you back. So I've decided to leave the country. I'm taking Sean with me to settle abroad. We won't bother you anymore."
---
That was a good decision for him, honestly.
Seraphine gave Charles one last long look, told him "I hope everything goes well for you," and then turned back into the makeup room.
Inside that room was her future.
---
"You may now kiss the bride."
That day, Seraphine and Jason were married, surrounded by the blessings of everyone they loved.
For decades after, she lived happily.
