Chapter 38: Shifting

I It was supposed to be a fresh start, a chance to blend in and leave my old life behind. My heart raced as I woke in a unfamiliar room. The noise from the streets made me look outside and it was a busy scene.

The streets were a sight to behold, every corner holding a new adventure or a hidden treasure. I marveled at the architecture, the grandeur of the buildings, and the rush of people all around me. It was a world unlike any I'd ever known.

I could feel Ayraa, her wolfish instincts tingling beneath the surface, urging me to run free, to let my senses roam. But I couldn't afford to draw attention. Not here, not now.

I decide to take a stroll instead, as I wandered through the streets, the scent of pastries and coffee mingled in the air, luring me towards a café. I slipped inside, the warm aroma wrapping around me like a comforting embrace. It was a sweet smell that seem strange yet I yearn to taste it.

I approached the counter, struggling with the foreign words on the menu. The barista smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners, and I managed to order a croissant and a cappuccino in broken French. She nodded approvingly, and I paid, my fingers trembling slightly, Alex gave me some paper to keep, he says it is used as a means of exchange.

Taking a seat by the window, I watched the city pass me by. Couples strolled hand in hand, artists set up their easels on street corners, and children chased pigeons in the square. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, a snapshot of Parisian life.

As I sipped my cappuccino, I tried to soak in the ambiance, to let the rhythm of the city seep into my bones. This was my chance to start anew, to become someone else, someone who didn't carry the weight of my past.

Hours slipped by, and the day began to wane. I ventured further, losing myself in the winding streets of Montmartre.

But as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, stretching shadows, I felt a restlessness stirring within me. The wolf inside me stirred, hungry for the open expanse, for the thrill of running under the moon.

I found a secluded alley, hidden from prying eyes, and allowed myself to shift. The transformation was swift, the fur sprouting from my skin, the world shifting into shades of gray. I stretched my limbs, relishing the freedom, the rush of the cool night air against my fur.

For a while, I ran, the city a blur of shapes and sounds around me. It was a dance of primal joy, a reminder of who I truly was. But I knew I couldn't stay like this forever.

As dawn painted the sky with soft pinks and oranges, I returned to my makeshift hiding spot. With a heavy heart, I shifted back, the fur receding, leaving me human once more.

I emerged from the alley, disheveled but alive with the night's energy. I walked back to my rented room, a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration coursing through me.

That night, as I lay in the unfamiliar bed, I couldn't help but smile. Paris was a city of contradictions, a place where old and new collided, and where secrets were both buried and revealed. It was a city that could hold my wild heart, if I let it.

And so, as I closed my eyes, I vowed to navigate this new life with grace and courage, to embrace the duality within me, and to let Paris be the canvas upon which I painted my rebirth.

The following evening, as the sun began its descent, I met Kira sitting at the balcony, she has been enjoying herself with Alex and I allowed them enjoy their privacy.

"Bonjour, Lola!" Kira greeted me with a warm smile, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. It seems Alex has been teaching her some things. "How was your first full day in Paris?"

I returned her smile, though my heart raced with the anticipation of revealing my secret. "It was... enchanting," I replied, choosing my words carefully. "The city has a magic all its own. I wandered through the streets, lost in the beauty of it all."

Kira's eyes lit up. "Isn't it something? Paris has a way of captivating the soul. Did you visit any of spots?"

I nodded, recounting my day with a mixture of truth and discretion. I spoke of the café, the winding streets, and the vibrant energy that pulsed through the city. Every word I chose was a delicate dance, a balance between the truth and the carefully woven fabric of my story.

As I spoke, I couldn't help but steal glances at Kira, wondering if she sensed anything amiss. She was perceptive, with a keen intuition that had drawn me to her in the first place.

"And what about you, Kira?" I asked, changing the subject. "How has Paris treated you?"

Kira's face lit up, her enthusiasm contagious. She spoke of the art galleries she'd explored, the charming bookshops she'd discovered, and the musicians who graced the streets with their melodies as she danced withAlex. Her passion for the city was palpable, and I found myself getting lost in her words.

As the evening sun cast long, golden rays through the windows, I mustered the courage to share a piece of my truth. "There's something else, Kira," I began, my voice softening. "Something I haven't told you."

Kira's gaze met mine, her expression open and inviting. "What is it, Lola? You can trust me."

"I shifted", Kira stood as she looked shocked.

"No one saw me I promise, Ayraa just wanted to be free and take a breathe of the city, it's the last time, I promise.

Kira sat down as she spoke. "We have to be really careful, Lola. Alex said these people must not know about us and we have no where else to go, please we need to exercise peer pressure.

I nodded as I went closely to her taking in her presence looking at the buzzing streets as I thought of the days that lay ahead of my time in Paris and how being a normal human being is the new norms.
