Chapter 75: You're not the first…..
Amara's POV
“Girl chill. I can smell the pheromones from here.” Lila held her nose and pushed me away.
“Stop, Lila. I'm not horny, I just said I had a lot of fun with him for the past week.”
“Yeah and see you skipping around like a kid in a candy store.”
“Whatever, Lila.” I rolled my eyes with a smile. “Like you and Andrew aren't doing worse.”
“Hey, don't bring us up now. You're trying to shift the discussion from you. And now you said it, I'm pretty sure Andrew was aware that you two were out together and everything that has been happening again between you two, so it's kind of strange to me that he didn't tell me.” Lila stared on the ground probably thinking about any valid reason why he wouldn't have told her.
“Girl, come on, you know Andrew. If he feels like something is not his story to tell, then he doesn't tell it.”
“Yeah, I know that.” She chuckled. “But I'm thinking of a reason to be mad at him so that I can punish him tonight.”
“Punish him?” I stared at her in confusion. “You know what? Don't tell me. I really don't want to know.”
She laughed and we kept moving towards the elevator so that I — or we — could get to my office.
“Look. It's Lucas.” Lila whispered and quickly looked down at her phone so that he wouldn't be able to notice that we were talking about him.
This was it. This would prove whether everything we did throughout my one week's leave was all just a game or if it was real.
“Hey Lucas.” I didn't expect the fear in my voice to show so much, but it did. My voice was so low with fear.
“Hello moonshine.”
Moonshine? What's that name and where did it come from?
“You look so beautiful today.” He said in a low tone as Lila took a few slow steps away.
“I don't.” I whispered shyly as blood crept into my cheeks.
“Yes you do. I was wondering why the whole earth seemed bland and like it had lost color and beauty today, but then I saw you and realized they were still just as beautiful. You just outshined them all and made them look less beautiful.”
My cheeks flushed. I was speechless. There was no way on earth he had said that to me.
“I'll see you….” He looked down at his watch before looking up at me, “....later, right?”
“Mhmm.” I nodded with a wide smile as he pecked me on the cheek and left.
I turned to Lila who had the most animated expression of all time. Her eyes were popping out of the sockets, her jaw was hanging open, her arms were dangling free and her phone was on the floor.
“Lila. Your phone.” I rushed to pick up the phone which I knew had fallen on the floor from her limp hands.
“Don't worry. It has a protective casing and a protective screen covering.” She said still with that expression that I burst into uncontrollable laughter even if I was as surprised as she was over everything that happened.
“Lila chill. I'm just as surprised as you are but I think we should keep going.”
“Yeah you're right.” She shook her head, took a deep breath and walked with me.
“What did you feed him, Amara? Whatever it is, I'm in full support.”
“I'm surprised but not too surprised because I saw these little hints of change then when we weren't talking any longer.”
“This is great, man.” She laughed. “I love this version of him a lot more.”
“Miss Lila.” A bald headed man called as he ran from another hallway to us.
“Do you know him?” I whispered as the man kept running to us to make sure we don't enter the elevator before he reaches.
“No. I have never seen him before. Not once.” She whispered back as we both kept staring at the man like he was some sort of strange alien creature.
“Why is he running so slow?” I whispered again, more confused with each second I looked at the man.
“Exactly the same thing I'm thinking about right now.”
This man was running slower than I could walk. And maybe that could be because he was so large in size but I highly doubted that, because I had a plus size friend that could literally beat me in a race.
Finally, after what seemed like hours of waiting, he finally made it to where we were standing, panting like he had just run cross country.
“Good morning, Mr……” she asked, really not knowing who he was.
“Mr Rogers.” He said in a croaky voice.
“Oh. Good morning, Mr Rogers.” We greeted in unison.
“The head of department asked me to call you because we had something important to work on right away. Our deadline is this afternoon and if we don't start now we'll never make it.” He spoke with such a sense of urgency that I even began to feel worried.
“Oh. Okay. Thank you for calling me, but I'll…”
“No, Lila. Go right now.” I stopped her from following me, knowing that her own case was more urgent.
“Okay.” She nodded and walked back with the man as he ran to keep up.
With a little laugh, I called the elevator and went up to my floor.
I was humming a song when I got up to my cubicle and saw Vanessa standing in front of it with her hands folded across her chest as she snarled at me like some rabid fox.
“Hello Vanessa.” I said, trying to be nice.
“Hello, bitch.” She spat as she stepped forward.
“Um, that was really uncalled for, you know.” I said, trying to cool whatever heat was between us.
“Shut the fuck up.” She snapped and stepped forward as I stepped back. “Who the fuck do you think you are, trying to come in and ruin my marriage?”
I wasn't going to let her stare me down over some man that didn't even love her anyway.
“Uhhhh, if I recall correctly, you two aren't married. You just wish you were. But correct me if I'm wrong?” I smirked and looked her in the eyes as I waited for her to correct me.
She just scoffed and leaned in closer. “You're not the first, and you won't be the last.”
After that she moved back with a feral grin on her face before walking away.
I shrugged my shoulders and walked into my cubicle, trying to act like she hadn't gotten to me, but I was internally shaken.
Could she have been telling the truth?
