Chapter 70: Why should I?!

Chapter 70: Why should I?!
Amara's POV

Breathe in. Breathe out.

This has been my mantra for the past ten minutes. I had tried to get myself to understand that Lucas had been busy and probably forgot to tell me, but it's Lucas so that's highly improbable.

Oh well. I'm not about to let him ruin my evening.

Even if he already has.

Ughh.

And he thinks giving me a free dress will make me feel better?

Anyway, I'll still take the dress.

I had waited about another hour when Lucas came and told me that it was time for us to leave which I found very exciting.

Maybe it was because I was bored of being alone, or because I was starving. I think it was the latter though because I genuinely was not that bored.

I would have eaten at the hotel but I didn't want to be too stuffed when it would be time to eat with our client and then be unable to eat because that will be deemed rude.

I took a look at myself in the reflective walls of the elevator, and I loved the way I looked.

I had on a mid length flowy black dress with silver open toed heels and silver accessories. I had done a very minimal makeup and had styled my hair into a low bun with a side part and it made me look so beautiful and a lot younger than I actually was which could either be a good thing or a bad thing.

“You look splendid, Amara.”

And here he was trying to wriggle his sneaky ass into my skin again. Well, I'll be damned if I let that happen.

“Oh I know that.” I smiled over my shoulder at him. “But thanks anyways. You don't look too bad yourself.”

“Thank you.” He flashed me a confused but amused smile which I really didn't know what was prompting it.

We finally met with the client and were served our dinner, and throughout the time the meeting went on, Lucas was staring at me. I could either see it or feel it and I hated it.

It's not that I hated it because it was creepy, but rather because my body seemed to like the weight of his gaze. My body seemed to savor it and thrive in it which was not good if I wanted to save my heart.

“Yes. Thank you very much for the dinner. It was absolutely lovely.”

I was taking over the role of CEO now? Because from what I could see, I was the one doing all of the talking and all of the important stuff but he was just staring at me like a lovesick puppy.

“So, I'll get to see you guys again and work with your company?”

Well that was a question I couldn't answer seeing as I wasn't the one heading the company even though we came here to secure a partnership.

“Mr Blackwell.” I snapped with a grin causing Lucas to snap out of whatever daze he was in.

“Yeah?” He asked drowsily like he had just woken up from a long nap.

“I asked if I was going to see you guys yet again. You know, in a partnership.”

The man that was hosting us was beginning to look worried but there was really nothing I could do about Lucas' lack of attention.

“Yeah sure. Whatever.” Lucas said and stood up.

What the fuck?

I stared apologetically at the man. “He means to say that we'll love to be in a partnership with your incredible organization.”

The man's frown slowly turned into a smile. “Well, I'm excited to working with you.” He shook my hand and I smiled and walked away, shoving past Lucas on my way out of the door.

I got into the elevator and didn't wait for him to walk in before I hit the button that was supposed to take us to our floor.

He just slid his hand in cooly, causing the elevator doors to swing open again and he walked in. There was no one else in the elevator and while I was supposed to be pleased by that, I hated it.

It reminded me of what had transpired between us in an elevator very familiar to this one and all that had transpired after. Things that I wasn't even willing to start letting replay in my memory.

With a slight shake of my head, I willed those memories away and forced myself to remember the way he had pushed me away after everything that had happened and the pain and shame I felt when that happened all the times it happened.

Because of my issues with anger, I never let myself get angry, but this time, I let it wash over me and take control of me. I hated that burning feeling of anger, but I accepted this one with my full chest.

“Amara.” Lucas' voice called out to me, soft and heady.

“What?” I seethed as I turned around slowly to show him that whatever hold he had on me before was lost and he didn't have it anymore.

He gently took steps towards me until he had pinned me to the wall, causing me to freeze in fear.

I looked into his eyes and the heat from it was enough to tell me that he was recalling our last elevator incident.

“Say it didn't mean anything, Amara.” He looked at me with what looked like pain and pleading.

I felt the anger rise to a boiling point within me at what he had just suggested.

“Why should I when you've already acted like it didn't?” I spat, anger blurring my vision.

“Amara.” He whispered and leaned in for a kiss.

Who the fuck did he think he was and what the fuck did he see me as? Some toy that he could use whenever he pleased and throw away when he was done? Well, not anymore.

I pushed him off of me.

“Get the fuck away from me, Lucas, and I don't know how you want to do it but get me a flight ready to take me away from here in the next one hour.”

The elevator slid open as if on cue and I started walking out with him on my heel.

“But you said your clothes will be ready by morning.”

“I'll take care of it. You do what I asked you to do.”
