Chapter 2 he is really dead
Anaya’s P.O.V.
“His car was crushed by the container that fell down from the truck. The truck driver lost control over the wheel when two cars running ahead of him suddenly collided. I am sorry, Ms. Rivers, but Mr. Hart died on the spot.” Detective Ralph finished reporting the whole incident in a low voice, filled with sympathy and remorse.
Died on the spot.
It meant there was never hope of him being alive after being crushed by that container.
I couldn’t speak a word because I didn’t know what to say.
I was completely numb…
No thoughts…
No emotions…
Just a void inside my chest….
My brain was an empty cave where wind was blowing fast….
“Thanks, Detective, for everything.” Rose spoke to the detective in a choked voice.
My eyes were still glued on the signboard in front of me.
“MORGUE”
Vincent was now lying there.
Rose hugged me tightly, but I couldn’t feel a thing.
There was no one other than me, Rose, and Nancy. Vincent was an orphan. I was his only family as his girlfriend.
“You need to pull yourself out, Anaya. Y…. you need to say your goodbye to him.” Rose whispered to me in a choked voice.
“How?” I asked. I didn’t know how I spoke, but I asked, eyes still glued on that signboard.
No tears left in my eyes, just the blankness.
“I don’t know, Anaya. I really don’t know how, but you have to.” She cried, and I felt tears in my eyes again.
I didn’t know what was going on around me. I only knew one thing: that Vincent left me.
No, he didn’t leave me.
He was killed by the heavens.
I didn’t know what grudge the heavens had against me, but he killed the second person who I cherished the most.
First my mother….
Second Vincent….
Why not kill me instead?????
Rose pulled my face towards her forcefully and hid it in the crook of her neck.
The darkness filled my gaze. She sobbed aloud. The vibration in her chest and the trembling of her body…
I felt everything….. But nothing in my chest.
My heart felt dead….
“Why you, girl? Why you?“ She sobbed, but her complaint broke me again.
I held her tightly and burst into tears again.
“Why me, Rose? Why, Vincent?” I cried, my voice muffled because my face was pressed to her chest.
She held me tightly, but I couldn’t stop. The dam of tears broke down.
“Aaahhhhhhh.”
“Aaaahhhhhhhhhh.”
I screamed in pain and agony.
I screamed in despair. The reality hit me hard again. I will never see Vincent smiling at me again.
He was gone. He was gone forever.
I felt someone pressing her chest from behind, but I didn’t flinch. It was Nancy who pressed her face on my back. She was crying too.
“I don’t want to live either, Rose. For whom should I live now? They called me a curse, remember? Now I felt as if I were really a curse for everyone..... everyone whom I love.” I continued wailing, venting everything out.
They didn’t say a word but continued crying with me, holding me tightly in their embrace from both sides.
I didn’t know for how long we cried, but we kept on crying.
Nancy and Rose were not only my roommates, but also, they were my best friends.
Nancy worked with me while Rose was an interior designer in a multinational company. We have been together for more than four years. I met Nancy on the first day of college, and we met Rose when we rented our first apartment. She met us through a common friend.
They were like sisters to me now, and they also treated me the same.
They slowly moved away from me when I ended up taking hiccups after crying so hard.
“Let’s go, girl. No matter how heartbroken you are, you need to say your goodbye to him.” Rose still urged me, but I shook my head furiously.
I wasn’t a coward, but I didn’t have the courage to see Vincent in this state.
Not as a dead body.
They didn’t listen to me, though.
They held my arms from both sides and dragged me towards the morgue.
My heart was now thudding in my mouth as the fear crept in my heart.
Memories of my mother’s death flashed in front of my eyes. My mother committed suicide after struggling with her depression for more than two years.
I was the one who found her body, and now I was going to see the love of my life as a dead body.
My legs were so heavy that they literally dragged me inside the morgue.
The attendant inside the morgue looked at us sympathetically, but my eyes were now glued on the doors of those compartments where they kept the dead bodies.
He walked ahead of us, and we just followed him.
He opened a compartment and I froze. The air filled with the smell of death hit me, and I gasped aloud, feeling suffocated.
Both of them whimpered in agony. I continued gasping while looking at that opened compartment fearfully.
“My condolences, Ms. Rivers. Please say your goodbye.” The attendant spoke to me sympathetically.
Goodbye…….
I straightened my back and clutched my chest but walked forward.
They released my arms slowly. Vincent was only three steps away from me, but the distance seemed infinite.
My lips trembled hard, and tears filled my eyes again when a face appeared in front of my eyes.
Not a face, but shattered pieces of a face stitched together.
His face was pressed to the wheel, crushing his skull badly. His upper body was completely crushed by the impact. I still don't know how that accident happened, and to be honest, I didn't have the courage to learn how Vincent was killed.
What I knew is that his crushed body was now lying in front of me. That container not only killed Vincent but also crushed all my hope of having a good life with Vincent.
A loud whimper escaped my mouth, and I almost tumbled but held the door tightly from the edge.
“Vincent.” I whimpered again, voice choked, and eyes filled with tears again.
I raised my hand to touch his face, but my hand trembled hard. I was scared that my touch could harm his already wounded face more.
I still had hope that everything was just a nightmare, and I would wake up soon before I entered the morgue.
Now that hope was completely shattered.
The cry left my lips without any warning when my eyes moved to his body. His body was still covered with a white sheet, but I could still see how badly the accident hurt him.
Was he in immense pain when they rescued him? But the detective told us that he was already dead when they pulled him out of the car.
Did he call me to help him while trapped inside the car?
"Anaya." I heard Nancy calling me in a choked voice, but I was now numb to everything.
