Chapter 63 THE MOMENT THE WORLD REMEMBERED HIM

Chapter 63 THE MOMENT THE WORLD REMEMBERED HIM
The Vale split open.

Not with sound.

Not with light.

But with a silence so deep, so unnatural, that Raine felt it settle into his bones like frost.

Ella stood before the fractured boundary, white-gold power spiraling around her like a storm trapped inside a single soul. Her hair lifted in weightless streams, her eyes glowing fiercely. Raine stood only steps behind her, breathing hard, white light coursing through his arms like veins of lightning.

Kael lay motionless near the tree, his breaths shallow, the binding-thread in his chest flickering so faintly Ella wanted to scream.

The crack widened.

A jagged faultline of black-silver split the golden air.

And then—

The Second Echo stepped inside.

Fully.

Its form was tall, shifting, made of splintered reflections and broken memory shards. It moved like a figure cut from shattered glass, sharp at the edges and too smooth at its core. Its presence dimmed the Vale instantly, draining warmth from the ground.

Raine stepped in front of Ella without thinking.

Ella caught his arm.
“No—Raine—stay behind me—your power isn’t stable yet—”

“I’m not letting it near you,” he whispered fiercely. “Not again.”

The Echo’s gaze swept over both of them.

Pathetic.
Both of you rewriting yourselves to avoid the truth.

Ella’s fists tightened, white-gold light gathering at her palms.

“I’m not avoiding anything,” she said through her teeth. “I know what I broke—and I know what I chose. And I won’t apologize for saving him.”

The Echo tilted its head.

You still cling to the boy you reshaped.
But you never asked what he was before you touched him.

Raine stiffened.

Ella sucked in a breath.

And the Vale trembled.

A dangerous tremor—one that vibrated through the roots and branches, through the mist, through the new bond between Ella and Raine.

“Don’t listen,” Raine murmured, gripping Ella’s hand.
But his fingers shook.

Because part of him wanted to know.

Part of him feared he already did.

The Echo turned its face toward him, jagged lines rearranging like a shifting mirror.

Do you want the truth, Unwritten One?
The truth of what you were before she destroyed your thread?

Ella grabbed Raine’s arm.
“Raine—don’t—please—”

But Raine exhaled, his voice low.

“…Yes.”

Ella’s heart broke at the word.

The Echo’s smile fractured wider.

You were not meant to be unwritten.
You were meant to be the Mirror.

Ella’s breath hitched.
Her knees nearly buckled.

“No,” she whispered. “No—he wasn’t—he—he can’t—”

Not the first.
The Echo stepped closer, its presence bending the air.
The second.
The successor.
The one forged to replace the Mirror you destroyed.

Raine’s world tilted.

Ella’s light flickered.

Kael groaned in his unconscious state, the sound weak and filled with warning.

Ella staggered back a step.
“Raine… that’s not true. If you were a Mirror, your soul would—”

Raine looked down at his hands.

White light glowed beneath his skin.

White.

Not Mirror silver.

Not Vessel gold.

Something else.

Something that didn’t exist before.

The Echo’s voice cut through the Vale:

When she erased the first Mirror—
the universe built another.
A new vessel for reflection.
A new keeper of memory.
A new Mirror.
You.

Raine’s breath collapsed into him.

Ella’s eyes filled with horror.

“But… but I gave you my memory,” she whispered.
“I remade you. I rewrote your soul.”

Exactly.
The Echo’s form flared with dark brilliance.
You infected a Mirror with creation.
You have built a creature that does not belong to destiny.
A Mirror who can create instead of reflect.
A paradox that should not exist.
A threat to every Echo.

Raine sank to one knee, clutching his chest as white light surged uncontrollably down his arms.

“Ella,” he gasped, “I—I feel something—pulling—something inside me—”

Ella dropped beside him, gripping his face with both hands.

“Raine—look at me. You’re not a Mirror. Not anymore. You’re you.”

But the Echo raised its arms, memory-shards spiraling around it like blades.

He is what the world built to replace what you broke.
He is the Mirror reborn—
but corrupted by your love.
Your soul twisted him.
You made something impossible.

Ella’s tears fell freely.

“Then he’s mine.”

She turned toward Raine, touching her forehead to his.

“You hear me?” she whispered. “You’re mine. Not destiny’s. Not the Echoes’.”

Raine’s breath steadied—slightly.
“I don’t want to be what they made me,” he whispered.
“I want to be who I feel when I’m with you.”

Ella sobbed.
“I know. I know.”

The Echo hissed, furious.

Enough.
You will surrender him.
Or I will take everything you love.
Starting with—

It turned its gaze toward Kael.

Ella screamed.

Raine’s eyes snapped open—

And the white light inside him
ignited.

Like a star detonating in human form.

He rose to his feet, arms shaking, chest glowing violently.

“Don’t touch him,” Raine said, voice deeper, laced with something ancient beneath the fear.
“Don’t touch anyone she loves.”

Ella reached for him—but froze.

Because the white light in him didn’t feel like only Raine.

It felt… older.

Echoing.

Like a new destiny waking up.

“Raine—” she whispered in terror—

But he stepped forward, shielding her and Kael both.

And Ella realized—

He wasn’t protecting them from the Echo.

He was protecting the Echo from something worse.

Himself.

The Echo finally understood too.

It took a step back.

No…
No—this cannot be—
You are not awakened enough—
You cannot—

But Raine raised his hand.

Light surged.

Pure white.

Creation.

Mirror.

Something brand new.

Ella screamed his name.

The Vale screamed with her.

Kael’s thread snapped.

And Raine—

Raine finally remembered
who he was meant to be
and who he chose instead.
