The Storm breaks

Chapter 52: The Storm Breaks

Detective James and Valerie

The night air bit into Valerie’s skin as she held Audrey close, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the men’s footsteps behind her, closing in with every passing second, but there was no time to think, no time to plan. The alley stretched out before her, a maze of shadows and danger, but she didn’t care. She had to keep running. She had to keep Audrey safe.

Her breath came in ragged gasps, the weight of the baby in her arms slowing her down, but there was no turning back now. Behind her, the struggle continued. The crash of fists against flesh, the grunts, the sound of something metal hitting the ground. Detective James was still fighting. But for how much longer? Valerie dared not to look back. She couldn’t afford to.

The alley twisted ahead, and for a fleeting moment, she saw a glimmer of light at the end—an open street, a potential escape. But just as quickly, a man’s voice called out from the shadows.

“Don’t move.”

Valerie froze, instinctively pulling Audrey closer. She could hear the sharp click of boots on the pavement, the unmistakable sound of someone approaching fast. She didn’t know if it was one of the men from the apartment or someone else, more enemies, more people after them. It didn’t matter. Whoever it was, they would stop at nothing to get what they wanted.

Suddenly, there was a roar—a loud shout, followed by a series of heavy footsteps. Valerie spun around, her eyes wide, adrenaline coursing through her veins. Detective James. He was coming.

The man blocking her path turned just as James barreled into him, knocking him backward. The force of the impact sent the man crashing into a pile of trash cans, the metallic clatter echoing through the alley. James was on top of him in an instant, his fists landing heavy blows with controlled violence.

“Go!” James shouted, his voice sharp with urgency. “Get out of here, now!”

Valerie didn’t need to be told twice. She turned and sprinted toward the street, her legs burning from the effort, but the instinct to protect Audrey outweighed the pain. The sound of her footsteps pounding the pavement was the only thing she could hear in that moment—the rest of the world had faded away.

She didn’t know how far she ran or how many blocks they crossed, but when her legs finally gave out and she found herself standing in the middle of a darkened intersection, she realized they were no longer being chased. For the moment, they were safe.

Valerie paused, taking in shallow breaths, the cold night air stinging her lungs. She glanced down at Audrey, whose tiny form was still nestled in her arms, sound asleep, completely unaware of the danger they had just escaped. The weight of everything—the fear, the running, the adrenaline—hit her all at once, and she stumbled, her knees buckling.

She knelt down, cradling Audrey as she tried to steady herself. The world felt like it was spinning. What was happening? Who were these people? Why were they after her and her daughter? And James—what was his role in all of this? How could he be her brother?

The answer didn’t come immediately, but something in Valerie clicked. She had no choice but to trust him, even if it didn’t make sense. The connection was undeniable, the way he had fought for her, the way he had acted without hesitation. He was her ally, even if it didn’t make sense yet.

And just as that thought crossed her mind, a figure emerged from the shadows.

“Valerie.”

It was James.

He was bruised, blood staining his clothes, his face marked with the aftermath of their fight. But he was alive. He was here.

He limped toward her, his eyes locked onto hers, his gaze softening when he saw Audrey in her arms. He didn’t say anything at first. He just looked at her—looked at them—and Valerie saw the weight of everything he had just fought through.

“I told you I’d protect you,” he said quietly, his voice rough but steady.

Valerie couldn’t find the words. She just nodded, the flood of emotion welling up in her chest. She hadn’t let herself truly feel it until now—the fear, the uncertainty, the raw, unfiltered exhaustion. She had run. She had fought. She had protected Audrey with every ounce of her being. And now, standing there with James, she realized just how deep this fight had become.

“I don’t know what’s happening,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Who are they? Why are they after us?”

Detective James took a step closer, his eyes hardening. “They’re connected to something bigger. It’s not just about you, Valerie. It’s about your past, about your relationship with Jake and his family. There are people in the shadows pulling the strings, people who don’t care about the damage they cause.”

Valerie swallowed, trying to steady her breath. “What do you mean—Jake's family?"

Detective James reached out, gently placing his hand on her shoulder as if to steady her. “I don’t have all the answers. But I know one thing—these people aren’t going to stop until they get what they want. And right now, they want you and Audrey.”

Valerie’s heart clenched. “But why? Why me? I—I don’t understand.”

“Because of who you are,” Detective James said. “Because of your connection to them. It’s not just about you being my sister—it’s about the night Jake's father was murdered. and you being the witness, you are automatically a threat to them ".

Valerie’s mind spun with his words, but they didn’t have time to untangle the mystery. Not right now. She looked around at the empty street, her senses still heightened, the fear lingering in the back of her mind.

“We need to go,” she said, her voice firm now. “Where do we go?”

Detective James nodded, glancing over his shoulder, his eyes scanning the street. “I know a place. It’s safe. But we need to move quickly. We’re not out of danger yet.”

Valerie didn’t hesitate. She tightened her grip on Audrey and began to walk, Detective James by her side. The streets ahead were still dark, but there was a sense of purpose in the air now. A sense of resolve.

They weren’t alone anymore. Together, they would face whatever came next. Together, they would fight.

Just then, Detective James’ phone rang…He hesitated, then picked

..." Hello son"? Dr Martin's voice roared at the end of the line.
