Devil's Den
Chapter 51: The Devil's Den
( Cell)
The grey walls of Hollow Penitentiary didn’t echo with screams.
Not anymore.
They were quieter now. Smarter. Hungrier.
Dr. Martin sat at the edge of his cot, polishing the lenses of his glasses with the precision of a psychologist. Across the narrow cell, his cellmate lay on his bunk pretending to sleep, But Dr Martin could hear his breath, a half second too fast , and a little too shallow.
Fear, Dr Martin had always preferred that over loyalty, Fear was predictable .Loyalty wavered.
He stood , he didn't need the glasses, not really, they were just another mask to appear vulnerable, but he puts them on anyways.
Meanwhile, two blocks away in cell 42, Jake paced slowly, his face ,gaunter now, beard starting to shadow his jaw, Time inside the cell had carved new shadows into him.
He had waited , watched , played the broken man, but every movement was calculated since Dr Martin got in the cell
He was in for a murder he didn't commit , his friend Ryan had just been recently released and he feared for his safety outside the grey walls of the prison.
Just then, his thoughts went back to his girlfriend Valerie and his daughter Audrey, his heart started beating faster, as he feared Audrey would grow without a Father, He had had Valerie recently and she sounded so upset and really didn't give him much a good response , She had missed his visiting days for like Two months now. ,
He had trained himself as a weapon,in order to survive the prison life.
Jake had come to kill Dr. Martin, that was his plan
And now… it was almost time.

Two Days Earlier – In the Yard
Jake had been folding laundry, prison issued and reeking of bleach, when he saw Dr Martin walking the outer yard perimeter, flanked by two guards who thought they were protecting the institution.
But Jake knew better.
Dr Martin was the institution.
His influence ran deeper than the concrete.
He saw the notebook tucked into the older man’s arm.
Still keeping secrets, Jake thought. Still keeping score.
That night, Jake slipped the blade from beneath the sink. Rusted, but sharp enough. He tucked it into his waistband.
Tomorrow. Tomorrow was the day.

Present – Solitary Block
But now... plans have changed.
Jake sat shackled to a steel chair, blood dripping from his lip, his left eye swelling shut. His last fight in the cafeteria had landed him in front of Warden Reyes, who was as corrupt as the system itself.
“You’re a curious one,” Reyes muttered, circling him. “You come in clean. No priors. You get fast with the gangs, faster with the staff. And somehow, you don’t break.”
Jake didn’t answer.
Reyes leaned down. “Tell me, who the hell sent you here?”
Jake raised his eyes, blood in his teeth when he smiled.
“I’m here for Martin.”
The Warden’s eyes widened for a second.
Then he laughed.
“Oh… you’re that guy.”

Cut to: Dr. Martin’s Private Meeting Room
“Bring him to me," Dr Martin told the guard, calmly sipping the black tea that had mysteriously made it past security protocols.
“You sure?” the guard asked. “He tried to gut one of the Aryan boys last week.”
Martin smiled faintly. “All animals must show their teeth before they’re broken.”
The guard nodded and left.
Martin leaned back in his chair, eyes half-closed.
He’d been expecting Jake for months.
But he hadn’t expected him to get this close.
Not so fast.

Later That Night – In the Visitation Room (Empty)
Jake was brought in—hands cuffed behind him, but his chin still high.
Dr Martin was already seated at the table, flipping through the list Jake had risked his life to find through his friend Ryan , Valerie’s name wasn’t just circled anymore.
It had a question mark beside it.
Jake’s jaw tightened. “You son of a—”
Martin lifted a hand. “Let’s not be dramatic. You’ve come for blood. I’ve come for answers.”
Jake spat onto the table between them.
Martin barely blinked.
“You’re not the only one with secrets, Jake. Tell me , have you figured out what makes Valerie so important yet?”
Jake’s breathing stilled.
Because the truth was, he hadn’t.
Not fully.
He only knew she was his girlfriend who was a eye witness on the night Jake's Father was murdered., but he doesn't know why she was caught in a web of a family she never knew .
“You're wasting your breath,” Jake growled. “I’m not here to play your game.”
Martin’s smile sharpened. “Oh, Jake. You already are.”
He slid something across the table.
A photo.
It was Valerie standing outside a building, holding his daughter, Audrey.
Jake’s heart dropped.
“Audrey,” he whispered.
Martin’s voice was cold steel. “She’s the key, Jake. Not Valerie. The child. And now that you’ve come this far… you’ll help me find her.”
Jake lunged forward, the cuffs biting into his wrists as the guards yanked him back.
Dr Martin’s voice followed him as they dragged him from the room.
“Kill me, and someone wor
se takes my place. Protect her, and you’d better learn how deep the war really goes. Either way, Jake...”
A pause.
“You’re already too late.”
