I stared at Blake, my vision bluring. “What do you say? Deal?“.
Blake calmed down and matched my laugh with one of his own, his one cold. Since when are you in a position to negotiate with
me? Get out!”
I nodded, feeling detached, like I was sleepwalking through hell.
As I closed the door, I caught a glimpse of Blake bent over the recorder, desperate to hear its contents. I asked myself: had Blake ever shown such urgency over anything concerning me? I couldn’t remember.
Finally, I closed my eyes, turned away completely, and told myself none of this mattered anymore.
In the taxi, I started questioning why I’d gone there in the first place What made me think I could ever get the upper hand with
Blake?
I bit my lip hard, so lost in thought I didn’t hear the driver calling me. Only when he shoved my shoulder did I snap back to reality and momble my Back Bay apartment address.
To distract myself from the heartache, I pinched the webbing between my thumb and index finger until the skin turned white, hoping physical pain might temporarily blot out the emotional agony.
When we arrived at my building, I stared blankly at the windshield, not even realizing we’d stopped.
“What’s wrong, miss? No money?” the driver asked.
A rough hand landed on my thigh, the cold touch seeping through the thin fabric to my skin, sending a shiver through me. I turned toward the driver, finally registering his presence.
The driver’s face twisted into a leering smile. “No money’s fine. I’ll go upstairs with you to get it.”
My scalp tingled with fear. I immediately opened the door to escape, but just as I was about to slip out, the driver grabbed my clothes, forcefully pulling me back inside.
“Let go!” I cried out. “We can talk this out! If you hurt me, things won’t end well for you!”
“Fuck!” The driver spat. “Who do you think you’re looking at? You dare threaten me?”
His foul breath hit my face. “I fucking hate stuck–up bitches like you. That naked photo online–that was you, right? Can’t I afford a night with you? Tell me how much you charge for a night!”
At that critical moment, an enraged voice shouted: “Get your fucking hands off her!”
Suddenly, the weight lifted from me as the driver was yanked from the driver’s seat and subjected to a flurry of punches and kicks.
It was Seth, now like a raging demon. “Motherfucker! I might not be able to beat Blake, but I can sure as hell beat you!”
The driver covered his head, yelling from the ground, as a crowd quickly gathered. “Help! He’s assaulting me! They rode in my taxi and refused to pay!”
Seth kicked him again. “Damn right I’m assaulting you! I’ll pay your medical bills too!”
I was still in shock watching this unfold. Only when the driver’s cries grew weaker did I react, hurrying out of the car to grab Seth’s arm. “Stop! You’ll get in serious trouble!”

Chapter 130
Seth eased up, afraid of hurting me. He exhaled, straightened his wrinkled jacket, and pulled a card from his wallet, tossing it on the driver. “Take It. Every time I see you, I’ll beat you again. Consider your medical expenses prepaid!–
The driver clutched the card, tring to p get up but falling.
I glanced at him, feeling nauseated, and pulled Seth further away from him. “Are you hurt? Why are you here?”
Seth, who seconds ago had been so domineering, suddenly changed. is lips quivered, his eyes reddened, and he hugged me tightly.
*I was worried about you! Came to check on you!”
