Chapter Thirty One

Chapter Thirty One
Cole Soren's POV

I surveyed the scattered troops under minor glowing spells, as Draven moved left. “Sir,” I said, voice low, “you might fracture the pack’s unity… send an insult, a challenge. Cultural triggers. Watch them fall into chaos.”

Draven paused, seeing the value. He nodded. Moments later, I signaled hidden flank agents. A few moved into position near the eastern wolves, provoking with a low growl and fake howl… meant not as communication, but provocation.

A ripple of confusion… then tension spread like wildfire. Wolves lunged forward, jaws snarled, and in an instant a skirmish ignited. Two wolves tangled. Growls tripped into bites. The tranquility shattered. In the middle of that chaos, Draven took his chance. He let out the grinning, echoing laugh again. This time… Serelina paused. Slowly, she slipped away from the fray, drawn deeper into the night.

Nyra's POV

The moment the laugh echoed again, I surged to the front of Serelina’s consciousness, her hackles raised. “No… Serelina, don’t listen…”

But it was too late. The tether yanked like a snare tightened, not just around her mind but around her soul. I felt it… dark, burning vines of corrupted magic twisting around Serelina’s spirit and will, dragging her like prey into a pit.

“This is wrong! You know this isn’t real… FIGHT IT!”

But Serelina’s eyes went glassy. Her hands hung limply by her sides as her body moved on instinct, as if puppeted by a whisper she once trusted.

I screamed inside her, claws out, fury burning… but the trap wasn’t physical. It was a spell woven into her bloodline, ancient, cruel, and tied to the laugh that had haunted her since the beginning.

“Lucian!” I howled from within, throwing my spirit against the prison now clamping around us both. “She’s gone!”

Lucian's POV

The echo of that damn laugh hit my spine like a bolt of lightning. I turned just in time to see Serelina… my tether… vanish into the dark.

“Serelina!” My voice cracked, raw and primal. But she was gone.

A violent growl ripped from Kael’s chest inside me, nearly overtaking my control. But now wasn’t the time for panic. It was time to lead. I spun to face the rest of them, Ferren, Jole, Leo, Amaya, Callum, Riven, Caelin, and the entire Duskveil force surging behind.

“We don’t have time,” I growled, my voice slicing through the air like steel. “She’s been taken. Draven’s moved.”

Amaya’s breath hitched. Jole muttered a curse. Caelin’s expression twisted into rage.

I wasted no time. “Jole, Ferren, Leo, Riven, Callum… you're with me. Caelin, take half your force and come with us. We go into the woods… cut the leash before he finishes whatever spell he started.”

I turned to the rest. “Ferren, you're in command down the ridge… take the other half of Duskveil and go for the front gates of Haven Ridge. Your orders are clear…” I met Ferren’s eyes, sharp and full of fire. “Kill everything that isn’t Lillian or Everett.”

Ferren's POV

My boots hit the blood-soaked earth hard as the tree line opened. The air was thick with moon-charged tension, and the distant structure of Haven Ridge loomed through the mist… serrated towers like jagged teeth against the dying light.

"Move in formation!" I barked, signal flares already streaking behind them from their wolves.

Dozens of Duskveil warriors broke into synchronized movement behind me, their pelts shimmering under the full moon’s light. The ground pulsed beneath them… Draven’s creatures were here.

And then they came. Out of the blackened forest, shrieking figures burst forth… half-wolves, half-experiments. Not quite shifters. Not quite men. Just twisted things that bore the stink of blood rituals and failed control.

"Hold the line!" I shouted, sliding my knives free.

Riven was beside me instantly, blade to blade with a mutant whose eyes bled silver. I ducked a jagged claw, slashing a tendon and plunging my second blade into the thing’s throat. All around me, chaos erupted… snarls, steel, and war cries.

Callum shifted mid-charge, his obsidian wolf slamming two creatures into the dirt. Leo limped but held steady, bowstring snapping as his arrows found joints and hearts.

A beast lunged for my back… and was obliterated mid-air by a flash of lightning.

“Wards are failing!” someone cried behind me. “Draven weakened the perimeter… he wants them inside!”

Damn him. I grit my teeth, signaled for Riven to break left and secure the breach. The gates of Haven Ridge rose now like a gaping wound… and I didn’t hesitate. I charged with my pack, the full might of Duskveil at my back, and screamed, “Take it. Burn it down.”

Lucian's POV

My boots cracked a dead twig… and the entire clearing pulsed.

“Trap,” I snapped, grabbing Caelin’s arm and yanking him back.

The sigil at our feet detonated with a blinding pulse of dark light… had we stepped an inch further, we’d be paralyzed, or worse.

“Draven’s riddled this place with binding magic,” Caelin muttered, eyes scanning the curling black vines creeping up from the dirt. “This is old... dangerous. Blood-bound.”

I growled, Kael surging near the surface. “He’s using her bloodline against her. She’s tied to this forest now. And it’s killing her.”

We pushed deeper, following the faint resonance of Serelina’s tether… I could feel it, like a sliver of pain in my chest, pulsing in time with her heartbeat.

Another trap flared ahead. Caelin hurled moon-charged dust into the air, revealing the glyph before they tripped it.

“She’s not far,” I rasped, voice going tight. “But he’s trying to isolate her. Not kill her. He wants her... turned.”

Caelin’s face darkened. “Then we won’t give him the chance.”

I lowered to all fours, eyes blazing silver as Kael’s senses took over. The smell of burnt magic. Blood. And something else… moonfire, struggling.

“Hold on, Serelina,” I thought. “I’m coming.”

Serelina's POV

The forest around me had gone silent. Not the silence of safety. The silence of something waiting. I turned in place… trees blurred and flickering like illusions. I blinked, but the world only deepened into a strange twilight haze.

Then… the laugh. That laugh. Soft, cold, cruel. The one I remembered echoing in my skull in that sterile white hospital bed. It slithered through the air, unwelcome and familiar.

“No,” I whispered, but my limbs felt heavy. Sluggish. The shadows twisted… and from them stepped Draven. Except… he didn’t look like himself. His face was younger. Gentle, even. Like someone you could trust. Dressed not in a suit, but in soft clothing. A kind smile. Warm eyes.

It made my stomach turn.

“Serelina,” he said softly, stepping toward me. “You remember me, don’t you?”

I clenched my fists. “You’re not real. This isn’t real.”

He just smiled. “I held you in my arms before your first breath. I tethered you to something greater, something eternal. You were meant to lead, Serelina. To ascend.”

Images bled into the air… visions of me rising above the wolves, my power crackling like a storm. Draven beside me, hand outstretched. “You can end all of this pain. No more war. No more death.”

“Liar.”

The illusion pulsed around me, tightening.

“They’ll never understand you,” Draven whispered. “Not Lucian. Not even Nyra. But I do.”

Then he reached for me… silver cords rising from his hands.

Nyra’s voice screamed from within me. “This is not truth. This is control. WAKE UP, Serelina!” She snarled, the light inside me burning brighter. The illusion faltered… but not enough.

Lucian's POV

“She’s slipping,” I growled, breath ragged. We had reached a wide clearing… and in the center, Serelina hovered mid-air, tangled in a mass of glowing sigils… Draven’s spellwork. Her face was pale, eyes moving behind closed lids. And the cords of silver light wrapped tight around her limbs.

“She’s trapped in his mind-web,” Caelin said. “He’s showing her a world where she belongs to him.”

My chest vibrated with fury. Kael snarled.

“Cut it down,” I barked, drawing the ritual blade Ferren had given me. “Now.”

Caelin began chanting in the Old Tongue, throwing powder and smoke around the sigils. I stepped in, blade slashing through the first glowing tether…

Serelina screamed. Her body dropped an inch. We’re here, Selina, I thought. I won’t let him take you.

Jole's POV

Location: Inner Fortress, Haven Ridge

The stench of blood clung to everything. I pushed through the corridor, my side burning from a shallow claw wound. Behind me, Riven and three Duskveil wolves cut down the last of the creature patrols near the lower wing.

We were inside Haven Ridge now. The heart of it. Screams echoed from above… Ferren’s team had broken into the upper balconies. I could feel the walls shake from the fighting.

But I had a different mission. I stopped at the old steel door. The one they’d said led to Lillian and Everett. I stared at it. Something in my gut twisted. I opened the door. They were there.

My parents. Alive. But not restrained. Not starved. Not weak.

My mother turned to me slowly, brushing dust from her blouse. “Jole,” she said softly. “You found us.” My father stood beside her, hands behind his back, calm. Watching me.

Too calm.

“Why…” I stepped inside. “Why aren’t you tied up? What’s going on?” No answer. Just a long, steady look between them. As if deciding what to say. “What did you do?” I asked again, voice rising. “What the hell have you done?”

Lillian smiled. And My blood ran cold.
