Chapter Thirty
Chapter Thirty
The forest canopy shimmered with the quiet power of hundreds of paws moving in perfect rhythm. From the shadows and moonlit trails, the Duskveil pack emerged… strong, silent, and countless. Ferren’s keen eyes caught the flicker first, then Jole’s head snapped toward the gathering dusk. Lucian’s grip on me tightened, while Amaya and Leo stood alert, scanning the growing tide of wolves converging on our position.
Callum and Riven moved with them, the air charged with a new, undeniable energy.
And then, at the front of the pack, a figure stepped forward… tall, broad-shouldered, with eyes as sharp and silver as Lucian’s own. His presence was both commanding and warm, carrying an unspoken history that rippled through the group like a whispered secret.
Caelin.
He approached slowly, voice low but clear as he addressed me and Lucian. “I am Caelin,” he said, his gaze locking with mine. “Your uncle. Your mother’s brother.”
My breath caught. The name stirred something deep inside… a connection I hadn’t known was missing until this moment.
“I have never stopped searching for you,” Caelin continued, his voice steady with the weight of years. “The moment your moonfire flared to life, I knew it was you. We… my pack and I… we felt it across the lands. The awakening of the bloodline, the fire in your veins. We came because it was you, Serelina.”
Lucian shifted protectively at my side, but Caelin’s eyes held no threat… only recognition, and an unyielding promise. Caelin’s gaze softened as he looked at me, his voice quiet and steady.
“There’s something of hers you might still remember,” he began. “Your mother used to hum a lullaby when you were restless… a gentle melody about two moons weaving across the sky. She sang it to you every night before you slept.”
My breath caught, the memory surfacing… warmth, safety, and that tune. I closed my eyes, whispering the first notes of the lullaby under my breath, tears glistening.
Caelin watched me, his voice grave. “There’s more. Something I carried with me since that day.”
He paused, tension entering his posture. “Before the Crestwood fires… I heard something one night… "
Flashback Serelina’s Memory
I was too young to fully understand, but the voices came through even then… soft yet urgent.
Draven’s voice, “Your bloodline is perfect. The tether I’ve woven from her lineage… when she awakens, the Moonfire will be hers. And the power to open the gate… will be ours.”
My mother’s voice, fierce but soft to my baby ears: “I will not let you use her for your ambition, Calder. She is my daughter. Yours by bond, yes… but not by right.”
Draven: “You will agree. Or…”
There was a pause as something heavy… anger, fear… settled in the room, then her mother’s last words, “She is not your pawn.”
A moment later, the sound of something heavy… an explosion… and then chaos.
Back to Present Caelin POV
My voice cracked. “That night, Draven’s wrath unleashed the Crestwood fires… destroying everything in his path. Your mother gave her life saving you and her pack. Because of her resistance… because she loved you enough to stand.”
Serelina’s world trembled. The lullaby, the fire, the memory she almost… but couldn’t fully… grasped.
“Tether of blood… he made it,” she whispered. “That’s why she fought him.”
I nodded. “He couldn’t risk your power… or the prophecy. Your mother paid the price so you could live.”
Serelina swallowed hard, her mind racing. “What about… my father?”
Silence bloomed among the gathering pack. My silver gaze flicked painfully to Serelina.
“He was from another bloodline… a line of protectors. But his fate… I can’t tell you yet.”
The assembled wolves… Duskveil and the original eight… exchanged quiet, puzzled glances. Serelina’s eyes searched Caelin’s face.
She realized something frightening… She had no memory, no proof of who her father was. The Rift.
Then I met the group... I began with Lucian, extending a steady, respectful nod. “Lucian Hale. You’ve protected her fiercely. I thank you.”
Lucian inclined his head, handshake firm with wolfish strength.
Next was Ferren. I studied her for a moment before saying, “Your loyalty to her… and to the bloodline… hasn’t gone unnoticed. You’re welcome in Duskveil.”
Ferren responded with curt grace, her gaze steady. “I’m here to fight… and to keep her safe.”
When I met Jole, his face grew softer. “I see the same stubborn fire you carry,” I said warmly. “That runs in the family.”
Jole blinked, surprised. “Family?”
“First blood, always,” I replied.
Amaya and Leo came next. I offered his hand to Amaya. “Thank you for protecting her since the beginning.”
Amaya shook it firmly. Leo followed… I studied his injured leg and nodded. A man who’d risked everything is welcome in Duskveil.
Finally, Callum and Riven approached. I smiled. “New blood. Keenest senses among the scouts. I see promise in both of you.”
Callum straightened, pride shining. Riven’s gaze glinted with enthusiasm. They exchanged a proud look as I glanced back at Serelina, offering a small, eager nod to Lucian. Then I turned out and looked out at all of us.
“Serelina Vale,” I called, lifting my voice across the pack. “Duskveil stands with you.”
Silence stretched. Then, one by one, wolves responded… howls at first, rising until the air thrummed with hope and allegiance. Among us were her kin, her blood, her heritage.
I turned to the group. “It’s time you met the rest.”
They filed past Serelina, silent salutes of respect to each warrior.
And then I spoke to Serelina gently, “This is your family… and your confederates. We are many, and we are with you.”
Ferren (Strategic Briefing) POV
Later, beneath the trees, camp lit by the faint glow of Moonfire lanterns, I gathered Lucian, Caelin, Amaya, Leo, Jole, Callum, and Riven.
“This is our plan,” I began, voice calm and precise. “Duskveil will block the east flank at ridge-high ground. Lucian’s unit and Serelina will take the lower slope entry. Amaya and Ferren will hit the summoning site to collapse it. Leo and Jole will infiltrate the west side tunnels to free Everett and Lillian. Callum and Riven will provide flank support and communication.”
I sketched the paths in the dirt. “We strike together at dawn. Each team moves on my signal so Draven can’t adapt. Caelin, I want two squads in support… eyes north and south. We breach together, we win together.”
Caelin nodded. “Duskveil is ready.”
Amaya (Concern for Leo) POV
Tonight… Right before we everyone was getting ready to execute the plan Ferren made, I found Leo by the embers… his leg properly wrapped, but his jaw set.
“I’m worried,” I admitted quietly. “Your leg… if it gives out now... in the middle of battle… you could be killed.”
Leo smiled without humor. “Then you’ll just have to make sure you have eyes on me at all times.”
I looked at him sternly. “What if you’re not standing? What if they use your injured leg to their advantage?”
Leo reached for a small leather pouch. “Then I’ll fix it the old way.”
I raised a brow.
He opened the pouch, pulling out dried leaves that glimmered faintly with dew. Moonbane Root… an old witch’s remedy known to heal wolven bone and sinew.
“I learned it from an old healer,” he explained gently. “This root soothes, strengthens. If I can slip away for 30 minutes or so, I’ll brew something to keep me moving… no machines, no doctor, just earth.”
I hesitated, then reached out, running my fingers over his wound. “Just… make sure you come back to me with two good legs.”
Leo pulled me into a swift embrace. “Always.”
