97. Leo

Days later.

I stood in Pete's room with my hands in my pocket as I watched him lay there unconscious.

He had been like that for the past few days but the senior doctor said he would wake up today. And just while thinking of his waking up, he opened his eyes and met me in his room.

A dry smile painted my lips to see him finally awake. "Raise your right arm and wave your fingers," I told him and got a confused look on his face but he still did it, it was my order after all.

I heaved a sigh of relief to see that he could move his arm. "Do the same to your left," I instructed again and watched him do it successfully. Another smile graced my lips but it was brief. "Don't fucking do this again," I warned angrily.

"I had to," he quickly understood what I was talking about. "You didn't seem to know he was coming to you..."

"I did. I was waiting for him to get close enough before you gave yourself to him. Do you realize that if I hadn't brought you back quick enough, you could have been paralyzed?"

The doctors had said that the syringe he was injected with had this thing, I don't remember its name, but if it was injected into my system, all of it, it would have killed me instantly, and the only reason it didn't kill Pete the very next second after he was injected with it was because only half it's content went into his body.

Pete didn't say anything after me so I decided to fill him up with the things that had happened since he was unconscious.

"The vice mayor's dead," I started and like I expected, he didn't find it shocking.

"He killed himself?"

"No, Lade did it." I ran my hand through my hair.

"What about his children?"

"I have them somewhere safe, the city thinks they were abducted since they couldn't find them after his death. His wife didn't take finding out he had a daughter from elsewhere likely," I chuckled after saying the last part, though knowing it wasn't very important to mention.

"Lade was attacked too, barely made it out alive," I found myself chuckling again. Pete tried to laugh but held his head in pain after.

He and I knew Lade was just a spoilt brat like Mae would have been, who just took after his daddy's empire after he died. He didn't have to work the way I did to build what he had today.

"Lade will be coming by today, to pay for Miss Yrote, and after that, he'd leave with her," I informed him and hoped I did well to hide how I didn't want any of what I just said to happen even if I was the one planning it.

"She saw him coming the same way I did, yet she sat back. She was going to watch you die, sir." Lade reminded me with a frown. He didn't like Mae, he didn't trust her either, and he had let me know lots of times.

"She hates me," I found myself bringing up an excuse for what he just said, defending her actions that day.

"You don't punish her enough," he grumbled but I could hear every word. I just smiled and shoved my hands deeper into my pockets.

"Get some rest," I just said and left his room.

Hours later, I rested against my favorite spot, the balcony where I taught Mae to perfect her shooting aim. I was contemplating if I wanted to sell Mae off to Lade today.

She was good enough to attack him now, she's proved herself many times and most of her training lately was very impressive but then, I was also scared to leave her to his mercy. Once I sold her to him, he could do anything he wanted to her and I wasn't okay with that.

I haven't done half the things I wanted to do with her yet. I've been holding myself back from her so I could focus on the more urgent things but now that I had to give her to him, I wasn't sure I was willing to anymore.

Speak of the goddamn devil, I think of her and she's running out of the mansion. She's running out of the mansion... why? I followed her with my eyes and saw her stop behind one of the flower bushes beautifying the pathway leading to the back.

For some reason, there was a man fucking one of the maids against the closest wall. How did I not see that till Mae went to them? Still watching, I saw Mae pull out a gun and point at the man. Seeing Mae with a weapon, the man raised his hands in surrender while the lady he was just fucking skimpily tried to cover herself and raise her hands at the same time.

Mae nodded her head towards the entrance of the mansion and the lady started in that direction. She stopped when she saw Pete.

I couldn't hear any of the things they were saying but I was sure Pete just asked why she was dressed roughly the way she was or why she wasn't watchful of where she was going to almost bump into him.

She pointed behind her and followed him when he went back to where Mae was. Mae still had the gun in the man's face. She turned the gun on Pete when he startled her from behind and when the man saw she was distracted, he tried to hit her but Mae was now super good with her reflexes, I couldn't be more proud.

She stopped him in time and landed a kick that sent him to the ground. He took a gun he seems to have had since and wanted to shoot at her but she shot first, and I couldn't stop myself from muttering a 'that's my girl,' even if the man she just shot might be in the right and she in the wrong.

She shot one of his arms and had him screaming, the only noise I've been able to hear since the sound of her gunshot. The lady behind Pete moved some good distance away from them all.
