Myra's health
Myra's health
Cal felt his world stand still.
He had not even had enough time to process the idea of his baby. Now he was losing it.
“What? How is Myra?”
“Still unconscious and bleeding. We fear the placenta separated from her uterus,” the doctor said, and Cal had to lean on the wall behind for support.
“And there could be more complications we don’t know about yet.” The doctor frowned. “Just how hard did she hit her belly?”
Cal was speechless, unable to speak while Gib explained the accident to the doctor.
He felt like he was back in that labor ward again where Cassie was suffering in labor pains, and then the doctors had to schedule an emergency C-section.
He hated surgery now. He hated them so much.
His biggest fear was that the doctors would step out of the operating room this time again, and tell him they were sorry, and they did their best.
“Is there no other way, do you have to do the surgery?” He spoke up, and even his uncle gave him an odd look.
They must have interpreted his hesitance as wanting to save the baby regardless of the cost.
“She is losing a lot of blood, Cal”
He nodded, and turned towards the seat where his father sat, suddenly feeling bone weary. “Do it.”
“I will need your signature as her husband.”
Cal stopped, he was not her husband.
“They are not married yet,” Gib said. “All her relatives are away except one. I will find him.”
Cal frowned, watching Gib.
He knew Myra’s cousin. They were really close, but since when did it become legal for cousins to sign the consent form?
“Is it not dangerous to wait?” He turned to look at the doctor, who had been in a hurry just minutes before.
“We can wait an hour or so. We will prepare for surgery and conduct some other tests while we wait for this relative.” The man nodded, and walked away.
Cal looked after him in disbelief. He had just implied that delay was dangerous, and now they had to wait another hour?
She could be dying.
He felt Gib place a consoling hand on his shoulder as he took his phone to his ear.
Cal suddenly squinted. Was it all those weeks he had been in a coma? Why did it suddenly seem like Gib had more knowledge about Myra and access to her world than he did?
He felt like a stranger here, a clueless one even though that was his woman.
When Greg Sullivan arrived, Cal expected the young man to treat him with hostility now that he knew the professor was fcking his cousin, but he greeted him kindly and even looked at him a little sympathetically.
Cal was surprised because that was not the reaction he had expected at all, but at the same time, he was relieved.
Maybe Myra told him about them.
He nodded from where he was sitting beside his father, who had been quiet the whole time, and looked like he was deep in thought.
He watched as Gib and Greg whispered between each other, and he heard the young man say, “Yes, I can sign. That’s my sister.”
He frowned and looked away.
It was not uncommon for cousins to call themselves siblings, especially ones who were as close as those two were.
“What is really going on, my boy?” his father finally said, calmly beside him.
Cal did not say anything.
He wished he knew, but he could not think past Myra on that surgery table.
He had a feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
They waited for a couple more hours before he saw the door to the operating room open, and Myra was being wheeled to the recovery room.
He stood up, and walked beside her, looking down at her beautiful young face with the oxygen mask covering half of it.
She was quickly wheeled past him as the doctor stepped out.
“How is she?” Cal hurried towards the surgeon, just as Greg fell in steps beside him.
“She will be fine. If you need to speak with a therapist for counseling when she wakes up to help her adjust...”
Cal turned away, not bothering to listen to anymore of this.
He just wanted to be with her.
Nothing felt right, and it seemed like his body was still in shock.
Everything had happened so fast, too fast.
As he walked towards the room, he heard Gib thunder, “Which one of you was insane enough to do something like this?”
Cal froze; He had never heard his uncle sound so angry.
He turned around to see him glaring round at everyone in the waiting room.
“What is that, Gib?” Gillian Dankworth stood up, walking towards him.
“How the hell could someone be so heartless to do this? You think it’s all fun and games.”
“What is going on?” Cal found himself speaking now, and Gib pushed his phone into his hand.
He stared into the phone to see a video of everything that had happened on the terrace, out on the INTERNET!
He frowned and looked at the name of the account and clicked through several pages to see the source of the video.
He was expecting to find an anonymous blog, but was surprised to find that the video had been posted on a personal account.
He tapped the icon and found himself staring at his goddaughter’s picture.
He grimaced and handed the phone back to Gib. “One of the kids made the video.”
He looked at his brothers. “It’s probably Leonard’s girl,” he said, even as his brother stood up with a frown.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?
“Your daughter is the only person I know who is friends with Angelica. Angelica was not at that dinner, but posted the video. Sum it up.”
He pushed the door open and walked into the ward, leaving the commotion behind.
It did not matter to him that the video went out now. He was done with keeping his relationship with Myra private anyway, and he was no longer a professor at Ciaran.
Of course, he would still get hate, but that did not matter.
His major concern was Myra’s health, and how to break the news to her that they had lost the baby.
He had just taken a seat when his phone vibrated.
He frowned at the email, and then squinted at the subject: THE REAL MYRA SHAW
And as he read, and opened all the attached files, his world came crashing down.
