227. SUICIDE TEAM

~ODETTE

A failed King. A desperate mother. And a stupid witch!

I could not believe my very own decisions even as I stared down at them.

How did I— the high priestess— end up collaborating with such puny creatures again?

“Odette,” Camille's gasp suddenly dragged me out of my thoughts.

Her face pulled into an awkward mix of relief and shock. “I didn't expect you to wait here... for us.”

My irritation sharpened. "I knew you would take a different route. One only the stupid witch knows!"

Before any of them could even understand my move, I went straight to the idiot and grabbed her neck!

“You!” I snarled, raising her above the ground. “You helped in creating this mess and dared to run when I came to you!”

The girl blinked her blank eyes and I saw the remorse in them. But it wasn't enough!

“It was you who wasted all my efforts in trying to keep Azarel buried! You directly helped him get back to the world and now see what happened!”

As my voice rose, it broke off Viktor and Camille from the shock my action had thrown them into. And in a flash, they rushed to either side of me.

“Let her go this instant!” Viktor dared to growl.

My already burning gaze shifted to him and I wished my powers were intact so I could slap some sense into him!

“Odette, please—” Camille shouted, drawing my attention away from her failed accomplice.

“What?” I snarled. “Do you really think either of you can stop me from punishing this fool?”

Camille's eyes flashed and she instantly let go of my hand. Then she dropped to her knees.

“Please, Odette, I know you are angry. I understand how much Kalista must have messed up things… but please, you can't hurt her.”

My brows raised at her pathetic choice of words and I couldn't help the chuckle.

“I can't hurt her?” I repeated, letting each word land heavily in mockery while I squeezed Kalista's neck even further.

Camille's eyes almost popped in panic but she knew how to behave compared to Viktor— who kept at his futile attempts to pull my hold away from the witch.

“Odette, I promised her that she won't be hurt!” Camille cried— once again, stirring my amusement despite my irritation.

“You did what?” I blurted in awe.

My eyes went from her to the witch… and I couldn't tell who was more stupid.

“You are a mere human. And you think you can suddenly make promises— to a witch?” I let out, unable to even wrap the audacity in my head.

What was even worse, the witch in question— the supposed higher being amongst them— appeared to have believed it!

“Bunch of pathetic idiots!” I scoffed as my claws pushed towards her sealed lips ready to pull out her tongue—

“You were right!” Camille cried out again and my hands halted.

My brows raised as I turned to her. And she wasted no time in spewing out whatever she had in store.

“Kalista has agreed to help us stop Azarel! She has a way to stop him!”

Reluctantly, my claws slowly retracted at Camille's words.

Slowly, I dropped the witch and glared suspiciously at her. “What is this solution you have?”

Her hands went to her throat as she pulled out a small vial from her ragged clothes.

“This…” she croaked. “It will destabilize him enough…”

My eyes narrowed on the vial and my brain started doing its job. I understood the content even before her explanations came. But there was one flaw with this solution of hers—

It needed to be administered at close range for it to work.

As if they had heard my thoughts, Camille took the vial from the witch and stretched it to me.

“We think you are the only one who can get close enough to Azarel to inject him with it…” she said.

To think they had finally become useful. Only to come up with a silly execution plan!

“It won't work!” I scoffed in disappointment.

As expected, they all looked shocked, staring at one another as if to confirm if they heard me correctly.

“Odette, there is no one else who can do this. Except you!” Viktor growled.

“And what part of— this won't work did you not get?” I repeated, glaring at his blank head.

“B—but Odette,” Camille started in a worried tone that stirred my nerves with warmth. “If you don't do it, who will?”

“Look,” I began with a sigh— as if dealing with them was a strain to my intelligence— “If there is anyone that Azarel is most alert around, then it's me. How can I be the one to inject him with the poison?”

Viktor frowned.

Camille turned pale in understanding while Kalista looked distant— almost like she was distracted as she kept staring back at the tunnel...

Almost like she was expecting someone to jump out of the shadows.

Ignoring her, I focused on Camille and Viktor who seemed to be catching up.

“If I try to inject Azarel, he will stop me before I can even proceed.”

Camille's shoulders slumped.

“What are we going to do now?” Kalista asked out of the blue.

My cold stare remained firm. “It's simple, someone else has to do it…” my eyes moved to Camille and it clicked— “I say, Camille.”
Viktor stepped in front of Camille instantly; “No.”
“Camille is the best person to do this,” I stated. “Azarel will never see it coming.”

“That's absurd!” Viktor cried out.

“What are the odds that the human mother will try to come against him?” I asked, focusing my eyes on her— while completely ignoring the dimwit called Viktor.

Camille was desperate. But she was smarter.

She had proven over and over that she would do all it took to protect her daughter, Dahlia— and somehow she had foolishly included me in that devotion.

I just hoped she would accept it without having to be forced to do it. Technically, she was the only one I could trust with this—

“You are right. I’ll do it!” Camille finally let out, confirming my thoughts.
