Chapter 196 Let You Free
The attending doctor in a white coat walked out, dragging his exhausted body.
Several people immediately rushed forward, except for Tristan.
He wanted to stand up, but his legs just wouldn't cooperate.
"Doctor, how is Harriet?" Ian asked with a trembling voice.
The doctor removed his mask and said, "The patient's life has been saved, but she's not out of danger yet. If she wakes up within 48 hours, she'll be fine. But if she doesn't wake up after 48 hours, her life will be in danger at any moment."
No one spoke. Silence fell over the air again.
The doctor sighed, "The patient will be transferred to the ICU. Family members can't stay with her. You should all go home and rest."
Griffin looked at Niamh, "You take Mr. Jones home first. I'll stay here and keep watch."
"Okay."
Niamh quickly helped Ian leave.
In just a few hours, Ian looked much older.
Ian initially wanted to take Harriet as his student because he discovered her amazing medical skills.
But after they officially became teacher and student, Ian got to know her character, and he truly treated her like his own child.
If Harriet really didn't wake up, not only would his clinic have no successor, but the world would also lose a skilled doctor.
Ryder watched Ian leave before turning his gaze to Tristan sitting in the chair. "Mr. Lancaster, do you want to stay and watch over Mrs. Lancaster?"
Tristan said nothing. He struggled to stand up and walked toward the elevator.
Ryder immediately followed.
The air pressure in the car was very low. Ryder didn't dare make a sound.
The Rolls-Royce drove straight to the police station. Ryder followed Tristan, and the moment he saw Opal, he was obviously stunned.
It had only been a little over two years since they last met, but Opal looked twenty years older.
Her features had become sinister, revealing a malice that was hard to contain.
But when she saw Tristan, fear clearly showed on Opal's face."You... why are you here..."
"How did you know Harriet would pass through that intersection at that time?" Tristan demanded coldly.
Opal was obviously stunned.
"Speak!" Tristan shouted angrily, making Opal tremble violently!"How did you know Harriet's whereabouts!"
"I... I followed her..."
"You came from another road, not from behind Harriet. How could you have followed her there!" Tristan sneered. "Even if it was following, it wasn't you following her. Someone must have been working with you, right?"
Ryder suddenly realized, "Mr. Lancaster, I'll check all her call records right now!"
Tristan leaned back in his chair. "The Brown family may be gone, but the Campbell family still has people alive, right? Within a month, I want the Campbell family wiped out!"
Opal completely panicked. "Tristan, no! This has nothing to do with the Campbell family! I was the one who wanted Harriet dead. If you want revenge, come after me!"
"Of course you won't live, but do you think your worthless life can pay for my wife's life!" Tristan's thin lips curved into a bloodthirsty arc, his body surrounded by a low pressure, like a devil walking from hell. "Everyone in your Campbell family combined isn't worth Harriet's life!"
Opal broke down and screamed, "Help! Someone come! Police, please protect my family! Help!"
Only her own echo answered her.
Tristan stood up and walked out. "Get to the bottom of the car accident. See if there are any masterminds or accomplices besides the Campbell family! Don't let anyone get away!"
"I understand." Ryder nodded. "Mr. Lancaster, rest assured, I will investigate thoroughly!"
"Mr. Lancaster, I just asked, and Mrs. Lancaster's belongings left at the accident scene are here. You need to sign to claim them."
"Okay."
Tristan signed, and soon saw Harriet's things in the yard.
The motorcycle was totaled, and even the helmet she was wearing was broken, showing how severe the fall was.
Ryder brought a dust bag containing Harriet's broken phone and a familiar diary.
Tristan's pupils suddenly contracted. "How is this diary here!"
Ryder hadn't seen this diary before. "Mr. Lancaster, is this Mrs. Lancaster's?"
Tristan frowned. "She went to Apex Global Group... investigate!"
"Yes!"
The hospital after 4 a.m. was so quiet it was unsettling compared to daytime.
Family members couldn't enter the ICU freely and could only see inside through a floor-to-ceiling glass wall.
Griffin stood in front of the glass, quietly watching Harriet lying on the hospital bed.
She was clearly badly injured, wearing an oxygen mask on her face, with only the fluctuating lines on the nearby equipment proving she was still alive.
Footsteps came from behind. Through the glass reflection, Griffin saw Tristan approaching with a chilling presence.
The next second, the diary in Tristan's hand was thrown heavily at him.
"How did Harriet know this diary was in my office?" Tristan demanded sharply. "She saw you after taking the diary home. What did you tell her!"
Ryder had already found out that Harriet went to Apex Global Group around 7:30 to 8 p.m.
She went straight to the CEO's office, came out after twenty minutes, and then returned to Lakeside Gardens.
The surveillance also showed that Griffin went to her house, and half an hour later, Harriet left, after which the car accident occurred.
Griffin bent down to pick up the diary from the ground and slowly said, "Harriet called me saying she wanted to see me. When I got to her house, she excitedly asked me why this diary was in your hands."
"I obviously didn't know, so she took the diary and wanted to go to Cloud Bay to ask you directly. Haven't you noticed that the place where she had the accident was in the direction from Lakeside Gardens to Cloud Bay?"
Tristan's face turned white inch by inch.
The thing he feared most had happened!
Harriet was rushing to Cloud Bay to confront him, wasn't she?
After all, he had secretly taken Griffin's diary and discovered the secret between them.
He couldn't help thinking, if Harriet hadn't had the accident on the road and had found him at Cloud Bay, would they have had a fierce argument and then parted ways?
They probably would have.
As a substitute, how could he compare to her unattainable first love!
It turned out that last night, no matter what the outcome, he would have lost completely.
Griffin closed his eyes and said, "You two haven't divorced yet. You're her husband in name. I have no right to stay here and watch over her, so I'm leaving."
"But Tristan, if Harriet really can't make it through this, I hope you'll grant her wish and not trap her in Emberfall even after death."
"When that time comes, I'll take her ashes back to our hometown, and as you wish, I'll never set foot in Emberfall again."
The area around Tristan became quiet again.
Tristan felt all his strength gradually draining away. His exhausted body leaned against the glass and slowly slid down, collapsing on the floor.
They were only separated by a pane of glass, yet Tristan had never felt so far from Harriet.
So this was the distance between life and death.
So far that he couldn't cross it.
After dawn, Ian rushed to the hospital first thing.
He was somewhat stunned to see Tristan sitting on the floor in a daze.
Tristan had always been high-spirited, as noble as a flower on a high mountain, rarely showing such a dejected appearance.
"Get up." Ian walked forward and said, "The doctor said family members can go in to visit. You go in first."
Tristan struggled to stand up, followed the nurse to put on disposable protective clothing, and successfully entered the ICU.
His trembling hand gently touched Harriet's face.
Her body temperature was low. She lay there quietly, without a trace of life.
"I'm sorry." Tristan knelt by the bed, holding her cold hand, his low, hoarse voice suppressed and painful. "Although I really dislike Griffin, he's right. If you hadn't married me, you wouldn't have met Lark."
"You wouldn't have gone to prison, wouldn't have suffered so much, and wouldn't be lying here, struggling with death. Harriet, all your suffering started because of me."
A tear fell on their clasped hands.
"You've always wanted to leave me, haven't you? I'll grant your wish." Tristan smiled bitterly. "Harriet, wake up. As long as you wake up, I promise I'll never appear in front of you again. I... I'll set you free."
"But if you die, I'll die with you. Whether it's heaven or hell, you won't be able to get rid of me then."
"Harriet, did you hear what I said? Waking up is your only chance in this life to get rid of me. As long as you wake up, you can completely get rid of me and live the life you want."
"I can tell that Griffin likes you. He's not someone you love without return. Your love for him has been answered."
"Harriet, you'll be with Griffin. You'll get the happiness you want..."
