Chapter 246 My Girlfriend
Scarlett didn't notice Ambrose's gaze, focusing intently on her phone call with Finnian.
Finnian was calling to share what he'd found out. He was still investigating the bribery accusation against her. Apart from one witness, there was no evidence to prove she had taken bribes. He told her not to worry.
"Finnian, thank you. I didn't do it, so it won't be easy for them to frame me," Scarlett said.
"Those people will think of every trick to pin this on you, so you still need to be careful. I have a friend at the prosecutor's office who just came down from higher up. He's basically the second-in-command there, an upright guy who's not part of Indigo's faction. I've already talked to him and asked him to keep an eye on this case."
Someone at the prosecutor's office, and in a high position too, who wasn't one of Indigo's people—that was good news.
Finnian's words gave Scarlett confidence. She pressed for the name.
"What's his name?"
"His name is Kieran Neville, with the characters for 'five mouths' and 'towering.'"
She hoped Kieran could really stand up against those powerful forces.
After hanging up with Finnian, Scarlett slumped back in her chair with relief, glancing sideways at Ambrose.
"Finnian says he has a friend working at the prosecutor's office, someone just sent down from above who's not one of Indigo's people. So there are still places Indigo can't reach."
Ambrose picked up the wet towel from the table and wiped his mouth, responding sarcastically, "Finnian's being quite proactive."
Scarlett glanced at him. "I smell jealousy."
Ambrose tossed down the towel, his tone flat. "Your boyfriend's jealous—shouldn't he be?"
All women shared the same trait that they liked being cared about.
She hadn't been planning to give him the boyfriend title so quickly, but hearing him admit to being jealous suddenly made her heart feel sweet, so she said in a muffled voice, "I'm still evaluating you!"
Ambrose narrowed his eyes. "Didn't you agree that time?"
Scarlett's face instantly flushed. Damn it, he was bringing that up again.
Actually, if he'd just nicely pushed a bit further with his request, she would have agreed. But since he dared to tease her about it, she couldn't give him the boyfriend title.
Scarlett put on a stern face and flatly denied it.
"I didn't agree."
Ambrose saw her expression darken and immediately realized she was embarrassed. She didn't like him talking about their intimate matters, but the words were already out, and he couldn't take them back.
He could only soften his voice to make amends.
"You promised that you'd only let me touch you if you agreed to be my girlfriend. That day you agreed, wasn't that indirectly acknowledging my status?"
"That day I just wanted sex, so I borrowed you for it," Scarlett deliberately provoked him.
Wasn't he saying she wanted sex? Then she'd give him what he wanted.
Hearing this, Ambrose knew he'd messed up and quickly responded, "My mistake, I said the wrong thing. It was me who wanted sex, me who clung to you, and you took pity on me and gave me a favor."
Scarlett naturally heard his plea for forgiveness, but she wasn't planning to soften, asking him ominously, "Didn't you just say I wanted sex? How did it suddenly become you wanting sex?"
Ambrose found it amusing—she was so petty, getting upset over a joke.
But since he liked her, he had to change his tune.
"It was me who wanted sex, but my technique is so good that while I was having a good time, I made you feel good too."
Scarlett fell silent.
He really was shameless.
Though what he said wasn't wrong—he did make her feel good—she just didn't like him constantly talking about her pleasure. If someone outside heard, who knows how they'd laugh at her?
She had her pride too.
She shot him a look, "Stop talking about this all the time."
"I won't. I'll only talk about it in bed from now on," he coaxed in a low voice.
Scarlett fell silent again.
Ambrose looked at her. "Not angry anymore, okay?"
"I'm still very angry."
"Then I'll punish myself—slap my own mouth?" He asked humbly.
Hearing this, Scarlett turned and laughed, saying enthusiastically, "Let me do it, let me slap you."
As she reached out, he swept her up in his arms. "You only dare act wild with me."
Caught off guard, Scarlett feared falling and quickly wrapped her arms around his neck. "Put me down, we're in public!"
"Who's got a death wish to come in here?" Ambrose sat down in his chair, looking fierce.
Held in his arms, Scarlett looked at his fierce expression and thought, he's mean to outsiders, but he treats her pretty well.
She stopped fussing and didn't raise her hand, just lowered her eyes and fiddled with the button on his sleeve.
In the sudden quiet, Ambrose looked down at her. Seeing her silence, he lowered his head, moved close to her cheek, and gently nuzzled her with his nose.
"Weren't you going to hit me? Why'd you stop?"
Scarlett lifted her eyes, her expression serious. "If you want to be my boyfriend, there are a lot of rules."
Hearing this, Ambrose's extinguished hope flared up again. "Tell me."
"You can only have me as your woman. You can't fool around with other women, and you can't make me angry."
"That's it?"
"This is just what I can think of now. I'll add more later if I think of anything."
"What you're saying is just the basic standard for being a man. You don't need to spell it out."
Though his agreement was expected, she still wanted to test him, so she asked,
"What if you find Hayden's mother? How would you handle that?"
Ambrose froze for a moment. This pause made Scarlett a bit dissatisfied, but then she heard him say,
"However you want me to handle it, that's how I'll handle it."
The recovery was timely and quite appropriate. She then thought that these were unknown future matters, and bringing them up now was a bit unrealistic, so she didn't dwell on it.
She'd give him the title then!
She extended her hand to him and said, "My boyfriend, please take care of me from now on."
Hearing the title, Ambrose felt a surge of emotion. Finally, not easy—he finally had official status.
He also extended his hand, grasped hers, brought it to his lips, and kissed it. "My girlfriend, feel free to rely on me."
Hearing this, Scarlett saw his happy handsome face and felt a surge of emotion too.
After her divorce, she hadn't planned to start another relationship, but Ambrose kept hovering around her, constantly giving her strong support. For a moment, she couldn't control her heart—it moved.
Since her heart had moved, she'd try one more time.
The two held hands as they left the private room, got into Ambrose's car, and headed back to the office.
Sitting in the car, Ambrose suggested that since they were boyfriend and girlfriend, they should live together.
Scarlett didn't agree. She felt that having just confirmed their relationship, they should still maintain some distance.
"Hayden only wants to stay with you now. If he stays at your place, are you really going to make me go back to Silver Oak Heights alone?" Ambrose complained.
"Hayden can come stay at my place occasionally," Scarlett said.
Meaning neither he nor his son could stay at her place all the time.
Seeing her insistence, Ambrose didn't push further, but switched tactics. He took out his phone, snapped a photo of their clasped hands, then posted it with the caption, "My girlfriend."
