Chapter 241 Reward You
The dinner was lavish. Since Rhea had gone back to Tate's place for the holiday, only Scarlett's family of four was in the large apartment—lively and cozy.
"Scarlett, I want to stay here tonight. I don't want to go back to Silver Oak Heights," Hayden made his request halfway through the meal.
Hayden had been staying here the past couple of days. Since school was starting tomorrow, Scarlett said, "Finish your dinner. You can stay tonight, but you'll need to go back to Silver Oak Heights tomorrow, okay?"
"My dad doesn't love me. You love me more. Can I live with you from now on?" Hayden stared at Scarlett with hopeful eyes.
Scarlett frowned. He had said this on Memorial Day, but she hadn't taken it seriously at the time. Now he was bringing it up again.
Before, she thought Hayden was Octavia's child, so she wouldn't let him stay here. Now he wasn't, and she'd been thinking about how he and Yara looked alike. After thinking for a moment, she turned to look at Ambrose, who had been silent beside her, and probed.
"Hayden says you don't love him. Is he not your biological child?"
Ambrose paused while drinking his soup and looked up. "Do you think I'd raise someone else's kid?"
Scarlett knew that was impossible, so she continued fishing for information. "Then stop being so mean to Hayden all the time."
"Yeah, you can't keep being mean to me," Hayden said, emboldened by having someone on his side.
"Adults are talking. Kids shouldn't butt in," Ambrose said with a stern face. Hayden immediately looked at Scarlett with hurt eyes.
"See what he's doing!"
Scarlett comforted Hayden. "I'll deal with him later. You eat your dinner first."
Hearing this made Hayden feel better. He lowered his head and started eating again, though Scarlett had dodged his request to stay here.
That night, after Scarlett got the two kids to sleep, she returned to her room. Ambrose went to her bedroom after finishing up work in the study.
After they both showered, they lay in bed. Scarlett rested on his chest, staring at him.
"Have you figured out who Hayden's mother is?"
Ambrose met Scarlett's eyes, feeling guilty, but he kept his composure. "Not yet. I'm hoping to find something out through this situation with Octavia."
She asked again, "Have you found my son?"
"Soon."
It was a brush-off answer. Scarlett frowned unhappily. "I don't think you're even trying. You're lying to me, aren't you?"
"I am looking. Don't worry. This needs to be confirmed carefully so no one can take advantage."
Seeing this, Scarlett said, "Your brother said Hayden looks like Yara. Finnian said the same thing. Do you think the two kids look alike?"
Ambrose's eyes flickered. "A little. That's quite a coincidence."
Scarlett couldn't read his expression, so she asked, "Why would you be interested in a woman who's been married before?"
Every question Scarlett asked tonight was a test, and Ambrose noticed, but he didn't show it. Instead, he said, "These things are hard to explain."
"By the way, this evening Indigo asked to meet me. Do you know what he wanted?"
By changing the subject, Ambrose diverted Scarlett's attention. She asked urgently, "To ask you to save Octavia?"
He nodded. "I refused, but judging by his reaction, he was pretty angry."
Indigo was the type who wouldn't keep someone around if they couldn't benefit him. Scarlett asked worriedly, "Will he come after you secretly?"
Ambrose knew Indigo's methods well and nodded. "Without any benefit, he'll definitely make a move, but don't worry. I'm already prepared."
With that, he pulled her close and leaned down to kiss her. "Let's go to sleep."
"Go sleep in your own room," Scarlett said. She wasn't going to let him sleep here since she hadn't finished testing him yet.
"Aren't we boyfriend and girlfriend?" Ambrose asked, confused.
"That day was a reward for you. I never agreed to be your girlfriend. If you behave well from now on, there'll be more rewards. Now hurry up and go sleep in your own room!" Scarlett urged him.
Ambrose felt frustration building in his chest. The benefits were gone just like that. She was doing this on purpose.
During the three-day holiday, Scarlett had the most relaxing time she'd had in a while. With Octavia arrested, she finally felt vindicated.
Setting aside the feud between the Mitchell family and the Mellon family, just the fact that Octavia had hired someone to kill her meant she had to make Octavia pay.
She still hadn't figured out Octavia's motive for hiring a hitman, though. Was it because of that video?
Or was Octavia jealous of her relationship with Ambrose?
Maybe it was both!
Someone as vicious as Octavia, who also held power, was quite frightening. Now that she was in detention, Scarlett felt much more at ease.
Scarlett went to work as usual. The art museum project was progressing smoothly, so her workload had decreased considerably. The design for the boutique hotel project was also finalized, just waiting to break ground.
The boutique hotel would start construction in a month, so she was now the most relaxed person at the Boleyn Group.
After the long holiday, every morning she would make a cup of coffee, then sit in her office looking at design drafts. She'd barely sat down when there was a knock on her office door. Police officers in uniform walked in.
"Are you Scarlett?"
Scarlett stood up and nodded.
"You're suspected of bribery in the art museum project. Please come with us to cooperate with the investigation."
