Chapter 222 Fragile
They walked toward the car that had crashed into them. It was a small truck, its front end crushed and deformed. They could see someone inside slumped over the steering wheel, not moving at all.
Someone nearby was smashing the car window. Vaughn stepped forward and managed to pry the door open in just a few moves.
Just then, a police car arrived. It was Ruben who got out. As soon as he arrived, he directed his officers to clear the crowd and arranged for people to help those in the vehicle.
"Ms. Mellon, are you okay!" Ruben walked up to Scarlett. In his police uniform, he looked different from usual—quite handsome and somewhat steady.
"I'm fine, nothing serious," she said.
"Good to hear. Ambrose called me. I'll personally handle this accident investigation," Ruben said.
Ruben was telling her that he definitely wouldn't let anyone interfere.
Scarlett felt relieved.
After all, the Mitchell family now had power and influence. If they wanted to cover something up secretly, it would be easy. But with Ruben involved, the Mitchell family couldn't interfere.
"Scarlett!" Briar rushed through the police line, running over.
Scarlett turned her head. Briar had already reached her and looked her over from head to toe. "I'm fine," Scarlett said to ease her worries.
"Really fine?" Briar looked at her doubtfully.
"Really fine. Otherwise, could I still be standing here?"
Only then did Briar pat her chest and let out a breath. "Good that you're okay. That was really scary."
Under Ruben's direction, the truck driver was rescued.
When the ambulance arrived, they loaded him up and headed to the hospital. Vaughn took Scarlett along to the hospital, and naturally, Briar went with them too.
Ambrose arrived at the hospital just as Scarlett was coming out from her examination, with Briar by her side.
"Where are you hurt?" His expression was calm, but his tone was urgent.
Seeing this, Briar tactfully stepped aside.
Scarlett shook her head. "Just a minor injury on my forehead, nothing serious."
"How's the bodyguard?"
Ambrose said, "The surgery was successful. They saved him."
Scarlett breathed a sigh of relief. Good that they saved him.
If something had happened to him, she wouldn't know how to repay that debt.
Although Gray was just doing his job, when someone risked their life for yours, it meant something different.
"What about the truck driver?" Scarlett thought of the key person. He couldn't die, or else they really wouldn't be able to figure out what happened.
"Still in emergency surgery," Ambrose replied.
"Since you're okay now, let me take you home to rest."
Earlier at the scene, Scarlett had told Ruben the general situation, which counted as giving a statement. There wasn't much she could do here now, and after all that shock, she felt completely drained.
Seeing that Ambrose was taking Scarlett home, Briar said goodbye to her at the hospital. Before leaving, Scarlett shared some of her thoughts with Vaughn.
"Vaughn, I have dirt on Octavia. I suspect it's her."
Vaughn replied, "I'm looking into it now. That truck driver doesn't look like he'll make it. Once the driver dies, there'll be no one left to testify."
"Ambrose just told me he wants to work with me to take down the Mitchell family. What do you think?"
Ambrose said he wanted to pursue her, but she was still on guard against him. After all, he still had the Serene Bay Peninsula project to cooperate on with the Mitchell family. How could he give up that project because of her?
But tonight, Ambrose had also left Hayden by her side right in front of Octavia, which meant he wasn't planning to hide it from the Mitchell family.
Maybe he really did want to take down the Mitchell family.
"We can trust him for now, but we still need to be careful. After all, he still has business with the Mitchell family. Once the Mitchell family gets into trouble, they won't let him take the whole project for himself. They'll definitely drag him down with them." She explained.
Vaughn was silent for a few seconds, then said, "Okay, I got it. I'll be careful."
At this point, he looked at her. "What's really going on between you and him?"
He knew that Gray, the bodyguard still in emergency surgery, was Ambrose's man. To assign a bodyguard to protect her at all times—clearly, this wasn't just casual.
Scarlett lowered her head, not knowing how to tell Vaughn about their situation. But some things she had to make clear, so she said, "He says he wants to pursue me."
Vaughn's brows furrowed slightly, as if thinking of something, and he asked, "That kid from last time—is he his son?"
Scarlett nodded.
"His son is actually pretty smart," Vaughn said with a hint of envy.
Envy aside, they still needed to stay cautious.
"My dad said that Mr. Mellon once helped Ambrose's father. But Ambrose's father is gone now, and his way of doing things is much more ruthless than his father's. So be careful."
"I will."
