Chapter 187 Unable to Control the Tears
Scarlett pulled her hand back from Ambrose's grasp, making it clear she wanted to cut ties with him. Ambrose looked at her with mockery in his eyes.
"We agreed from the start that whoever crossed the line would end this relationship." Scarlett's calm words revealed her determination.
"Asking a few questions counts as crossing the line? This is just an excuse you're using to cut me off completely!"
Scarlett had anticipated Ambrose's reaction. To end the relationship, if he wanted to put the blame on her, she'd accept it.
"I've never asked about your business, have I!"
Her words were like knives stabbing straight into Ambrose's heart. She didn't ask because she didn't care. Ever since he heard she had gone into Ulysses' room, anger had been building up inside him.
Now her words made that anger surge even higher. He asked, "Scarlett, during all this time, didn't you feel even a bit reluctant to let go?"
She looked at him with a mocking smile. Reluctant?
When he helped her, she had felt that way. But after the thing with Octavia came out, Scarlett saw clearly that there could never be any possibility between them. She couldn't afford to be greedy.
"It's just a friends-with-benefits thing. What's there to be reluctant about?" Her voice was cold and sarcastic.
Ambrose stared at her for a long time, then finally laughed softly, "Very good."
"You want to end this, right? Then have it your way!"
Scarlett was in disbelief for a moment. A few seconds later, she came back to her senses—he had agreed.
Perhaps he was just waiting for her to bring it up!
Good. She finally didn't have to worry about whether they could separate or not.
"Then it's settled. Stop the car up ahead, I'll get off here," she said.
"Chase, stop the car." Ambrose's voice was icy. Chase, who was driving, had heard their conversation and could tell they were both angry. He wanted to ease the tension between them.
"It's not a good place to stop."
"I said stop the car. Why so much nonsense?" Ambrose snapped coldly.
Ambrose was angry, so Chase had no choice but to follow his wishes and stop the car. When Scarlett saw the car stop, she pushed open the door and got out. Just as she closed the door, she heard Ambrose bark at Chase.
"Drive."
Scarlett watched the car slowly drive away, then turned and walked toward the main road on the other side. For some reason, she felt terrible—so terrible that she couldn't control her tears. She took a deep breath, wiped them away with her hand, and walked firmly toward home.
This was what she had always wanted. Now it was finally happening, and she should feel happy. Yes, she must be crying tears of joy.
She comforted herself as she walked. By the time she finally calmed down, she called Briar. As it happened, Briar was not far behind Ambrose's car. After getting Scarlett's call, she quickly rushed to her location.
She got in the car, and Briar secretly studied her expression. "I made things clear with him. We've separated." Scarlett decided to be straightforward.
Briar did want her to resolve things quickly, but hearing it was settled so fast, she felt it was unfair.
"Men really are heartless."
"Actually, this is fine. At least I can have peace of mind sooner."
After hearing this, Briar laughed, "Don't worry, find a more handsome man later. Life will be better than now."
Scarlett wasn't in the mood right now. She leaned listlessly against the car window. Briar wanted to comfort her but knew she needed quiet, so she didn't say anything.
"Get some rest. Your injured hand—did it get hurt again?"
Today had been turbulent, and Scarlett's injured hand had definitely been affected. She lifted her hand to look at it and said reassuringly, "Should be fine."
There was no more conversation. The car headed toward Lakeside Garden.
Chase drove while constantly glancing at Ambrose in the back seat. "Why are you angry with Ms. Mellon? Think about it—how much has she suffered these past few years? She even gave birth to twins for you. Even though she only took care of Yara, she raised her really well."
Ambrose was full of anger. He reached up and tugged at his collar button, but didn't respond. Chase continued, "The rumors about you and Octavia are everywhere. Understandably, Ms. Mellon is upset. And you're angry with her? What if she runs away? Where would you go to find her?"
Ambrose's movement paused. Run away? Where would Scarlett run to? She was still trying to find out where her son was—would she really leave?
"She didn't even ask me about the thing with Octavia. She just opened her mouth and wanted to break up. She doesn't have even a bit of feeling for me." The more Ambrose talked about it, the angrier he got.
"Who proposed the agreement in the first place?" Chase asked a practical question.
Ambrose fell silent. He had proposed the agreement, but it was only to keep Scarlett from leaving. She always wanted to shake him off, and besides, he didn't know about the children back then.
Thinking about this, Ambrose felt quite regretful.
"Mr. Boleyn, Ms. Mellon has been hurt before. Aren't you afraid another man will take advantage of this opportunity?"
The image of someone taking advantage flashed through Ambrose's mind—Finnian appeared in his thoughts. He pinched the bridge of his nose with a headache. In his anger just now, he had forgotten about this.
"Keep an eye on her. Don't let anyone take advantage. Also, Ulysses won't let this go after she hit him with that bottle."
"The bodyguards will follow her secretly. But if you want to win her back later, it's going to be tough."
Ambrose wasn't worried at all. With the child involved, she'd have to come back even if she didn't want to.
Now was the most critical moment. He'd let her cool down first. Once things were settled, he'd explain everything clearly.
Scarlett went to the hospital afterward. Her wound had opened up a bit, and the doctor changed the dressing. After everything was done, Briar drove her back to Lakeside Garden.
After the turbulent day, Scarlett was exhausted. She lay down on the bed and quickly fell asleep.
She didn't even get up for dinner. Briar picked up Yara from kindergarten. When Yara saw that Scarlett didn't get up to eat, she thought she was sick and was very worried. Around nine o'clock at night, Yara secretly called Ambrose.
"Ambrose, my mommy is sick. She hasn't gotten up to eat." Yara's sweet, childlike voice sounded very worried.
After hearing the news, Ambrose asked Yara to give the phone to Rhea. After Rhea took the phone, he asked about the situation.
"I just went in to check. She doesn't have a fever. She's probably just too tired. She lost so much blood from her hand injury—she needs time to recover slowly," Rhea said.
Ambrose told Rhea to call him if anything happened, but not to let Scarlett know he had given these instructions.
Rhea guessed they must have had a fight and didn't ask more questions, just agreed.
Scarlett woke up the next day. The art gallery was starting construction that day, and she needed to be at the site. After a night's sleep, she felt much better.
After breakfast, she dropped Yara off at kindergarten, then rushed to the company. Before nine o'clock, she and her team hurried to the construction site to oversee the start of work.
Scarlett stayed at the site all day. By the time she got off work in the evening, she was covered in dust and her legs were sore.
She left straight from the site without going back to the company. She picked up Yara first, then took her back to Lakeside Garden. After getting home, she went straight into the bathroom and didn't come out until she was clean.
"Mommy, Hayden invited me to play at his house on Saturday." Yara, sitting on her bed, said in her sweet childlike voice.
Scarlett's hand paused while drying her hair, but she quickly said, "On Saturday, Mommy is taking you to meet your grandfather's friend."
