Chapter 145 Requesting to Take Back the Child
Scarlett got busy as soon as she arrived at work. There was an important group meeting in the afternoon, and she needed to organize materials for it in the morning. After organizing everything, some documents needed to be printed, so after selecting the print settings, she headed to the design department's mailroom.
But she found the printer was out of paper. Just then, Echo passed by and saw Scarlett standing by the printer looking confused, so she walked in and said.
"There's been no paper since this morning. I went to the relevant departments, but nobody paid any attention."
Scarlett frowned, guessing that the design department was being looked down upon by other departments because it had no director.
"If we had a leader, nobody would dare treat us like this."
At this, a gleam flashed in Echo's eyes as she egged Scarlett on.
"Ms. Mellon, you're the future director. Why don't you go ask someone for some printer paper?"
Scarlett glanced at Echo coolly with a serious expression, "I don't even know I'm the director. How do you know I'm the future director?"
Echo, now called out, laughed awkwardly. "You're too tight-lipped. The HR people have already approached you. The director position is definitely yours."
Scarlett maintained her serious look. "Saying things without evidence counts as spreading rumors."
Echo froze, realizing the seriousness, and slapped her mouth, saying with an apologetic smile, "Look at this mouth of mine, always joking around. Don't take it to heart!"
"Joking around with me is one thing, but don't make these baseless jokes behind people's backs." Scarlett warned.
"I won't."
Scarlett walked out of the mailroom toward the office, while Echo, standing in place, shot a nasty look at her back.
Back in the office, Scarlett called Ewan.
"Ewan, I need a favor. The design department is out of printer paper. Go find the supplies department manager. If they won't give you any, go straight to their supervisor. It's not convenient for me to step forward right now."
Ewan had heard the rumors circulating in the design department these past two days and understood her concerns, so he readily agreed, "Okay, I'll go get some."
Scarlett hung up with a cold smile on her lips. She wanted to see exactly who was causing trouble behind the scenes.
Ewan quickly got things done. With paper available, Scarlett's materials were printed out, and everything was ready for the afternoon meeting. At noon, Scarlett had lunch with her team members in the company cafeteria. On her way back to the office after eating, her phone in her pocket vibrated and rang.
She pulled out her phone and saw the number on the screen. Her brows furrowed slightly. Zane?
Looking at her phone, she guessed Zane was calling about Wesley. She felt repulsed by the Ross family from the bottom of her heart, but if she refused the call now, they would find other ways to reach her. Better to clear things up now.
"Ms. Mellon, let's go." Ewan said as he walked past her.
She looked up and came back to her senses. "You guys go ahead. I need to take this call."
After the others walked past, Scarlett went to the stairwell of the fire escape before pressing the answer button.
"Scarlett, it's me." From the other end came Zane's voice, sounding as if he'd aged ten years, but it stirred no ripples in her heart. She asked calmly.
"What do you want?"
"I'm begging you to let Wesley go. Not only is he about to lose his company, but he's also facing prison. He said if you're willing to show mercy, he'll immediately give you forty percent of the company's shares. He's already signed the papers. The documents are in my hands." Zane stated his purpose in one breath.
Scarlett looked down at the reflective floor, her eyes narrowing.
"You've got it wrong. The people who arrested him are law enforcement. What does that have to do with me? As for the company shares, I've thought it through. With my abilities, building a new company from scratch is just a matter of time. Even though that company is almost entirely my hard work, who told me to be so blind?"
Scarlett's refusal was clear. She didn't want it anymore.
Zane panicked, and his panic made him cough.
"If your health isn't good, don't worry about this. He broke the law. Nobody can help him."
"Mr. Boleyn can. As long as he shows mercy, Wesley won't have to go to prison. We'll give you all of the Ross Group." Zane said breathlessly, throwing out a bigger bargaining chip.
Unfortunately, his bargaining chip had long become worthless in Scarlett's eyes. She gave her answer without leaving any room.
"As I said, nobody can do anything about it."
"Scarlett, are you really going to stand by and watch him die? Don't think that just because Wesley goes to prison, nobody will know about those shameful things you did. I'm telling you, if Wesley really goes to prison, I'll definitely announce to the world that the child you gave birth to isn't from the Ross family. When that happens, you'll be cursed by everyone, and your child will be discriminated against by classmates."
Each threatening sentence stabbed at Scarlett's heart, causing a dull ache.
The Ross family always showed their true colors when they couldn't get what they wanted.
She looked up at the ceiling of the stairwell and laughed coldly.
"Setting aside the fact that Wesley deceived me first, just talking about the child, my efforts over these years have made up for everything. If you want to announce it to everyone, go ahead. But before you do, think about whether you can bear the consequences. I've said everything I need to say. That's it."
With that, Scarlett didn't wait for Zane's response and hung up.
Saying one more word would be a waste of breath.
Wesley must have asked Zane to make this call. Even in prison, he still wanted to clear himself and escape legal punishment. He truly had no respect for the law.
Once a person lost respect for anything, it's the beginning of their downfall.
Scarlett put away her phone, turned around, and left the stairwell to return to the office.
In the afternoon, during the group meeting, Ambrose attended. When the meeting was halfway through, the conference room door opened, and Cody stood at the entrance, glaring angrily at Ambrose.
Cody's face was serious. "You. Come out."
The "you" didn't need clarification. Ambrose consciously said to everyone.
"You all continue."
With that, he stood up and walked out of the conference room. Once outside, Ambrose didn't have a pleasant expression either. "What is it that you have to talk about right now?"
Cody glared at him coldly. "About Hayden's mother."
As soon as Cody spoke, Ambrose guessed that Octavia had revealed everything. He didn't respond until they were back in the office.
"Who told you what?" He asked while walking toward the sofa area.
Cody, leaning on his cane, walked behind him. "Indigo called me personally, saying his daughter bore you a son and wants the Boleyn family to give an explanation."
Ambrose stood by the table, waiting for Cody to come over. When he arrived, Ambrose stepped forward to help support him.
Cody glanced at him coldly with a look that saw through his thoughts.
"Trying to butter me up won't work. This matter needs to be cleared up."
After helping him sit down, Ambrose straightened up and spread his hands, "What kind of explanation? His daughter quietly gave birth to the child without telling anyone. I'm a victim too!"
How could Cody not understand this? The Mitchell family's Octavia kept it from everyone and only told Ambrose after giving birth to the child because she wanted to marry him.
But he used his health as an excuse, and every reason was very clear.
"Talking about all this now is useless. You kept it from everyone and didn't offer any compensation. Now you won't even let her see the child, and they're demanding the child back."
