Chapter 137 Confiding in Each Other
Hayden froze. After more than ten seconds, he said very reluctantly, "If you go, I'll go."
Ambrose fell silent.
Yara, who was nearby, heard this and perked up her ears, her eyes widening. "Hayden, you have a mom?"
Hayden nodded and mumbled in a low voice, "I've seen her once or twice. I feel like she's not my mom."
Yara was a smart kid and immediately thought of what she'd seen on TV - after parents divorce, kids who stay with their dad rarely get to see their mom.
She felt sorry for Hayden and comforted him, "Your parents are divorced, so your mom probably can't come see you often."
"Look, my mom divorced my bad dad, and I can't see him either. But it's better not seeing him - I don't want to see him."
"I don't want to see a mom who doesn't feel like my mom either."
The two little ones poured their hearts out to each other. Up front, Ambrose, who was driving, felt the corners of his lips curve up. His unhappy mood from early in the morning was gradually lifted by the two kids.
"Yara, in a few days, I'll grant your wish and move out of your house. Then no one will compete with you for your mom anymore. Happy now?" Ambrose remembered how Yara had been keeping her distance from him these past few days and couldn't help teasing her.
Yara stopped talking, looked up, stared at the back of his head, pressed her pink little lips together, and said nothing.
Through the rearview mirror, Ambrose took in her expression. It seemed Yara was just as stubborn as Scarlett.
"Dad, are you taking me to live with her?" Hayden's voice suddenly shot up, looking at Ambrose with worried eyes.
The gaze in the rearview mirror shifted to Hayden. He was silent for a few seconds before speaking.
"We're going back to our own home. You've been bothering your Scarlett for a while now. It's time to go back."
Hearing this explanation, Hayden felt a bit more at ease, but still said stubbornly, "I'm not going back. I want to keep staying here."
Ambrose gave a light snort. "In what capacity would you stay there?"
Hayden couldn't come up with an answer for a moment. His face turned red with anxiety, tears almost bursting out. Finally, he threw a tantrum: "I'm not leaving anyway."
Seeing this, Ambrose added another blow: "I don't have the nerve to keep staying there."
Hayden's mood suddenly plummeted. He hung his head with a miserable expression. Yara beside him also looked serious.
Hayden's mom was back, and Ambrose was leaving. He must be going back to be with Hayden's mom!
For some reason, Yara suddenly felt very uncomfortable, even a bit angry.
After dropping the kids off at kindergarten, Ambrose returned to the company and went straight into a meeting about the bidding for the Serene Bay Peninsula project.
After hearing the project manager's report, Ambrose gave his opinion: "The proposals are all pretty similar, but the most important thing is to highlight the project's future prospects. The long-term development is what matters most."
"Mr. Boleyn, we'll go back and revise it," the project manager responded.
After the meeting ended, Ambrose returned to his office. Ryder, who followed him in, handed him some important documents. Before leaving, he said, "Mr. Boleyn, a Ms. Mitchell called looking for you, asking you to call her back."
After Ryder left, Ambrose thought for a few seconds, picked up his phone, and called Octavia back.
"Ambrose." Octavia's soft, gentle voice came through.
"You want to see Hayden - let's make it Saturday. I'll have someone bring him to you," Ambrose got straight to the point.
"Okay, but I'm worried my parents will find out about Hayden's existence. How about I come to your place instead?" Octavia said.
Back then, the Mitchell family parents didn't know about Octavia giving birth. Because of her health issues, she had handed Hayden over to Ambrose.
Ambrose was silent for a few seconds, then replied, "My place isn't very convenient either. How about this - let's arrange to meet at a hotel first."
"That works. Just tell me the address once you've arranged the hotel."
"Okay. Are you feeling better now?" Ambrose asked out of concern.
"Nothing serious anymore. I'll probably be staying in Silverlight City from now on." Octavia paused here, then added another sentence.
"I've been neglecting Hayden because of my health problems. From now on, I'll probably see him more often. Is that okay with you?"
She was Hayden's mom, and she had risked her life to give birth to Hayden. How could Ambrose possibly refuse to let her see him?
"Seeing Hayden is your right," he said flatly.
"Okay, thank you!"
After hanging up, thinking about Scarlett's attitude, Ambrose pinched the bridge of his nose with a headache. Since she didn't want Hayden staying there, he'd take him away. Besides, with Octavia wanting to see Hayden regularly, it would avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.
During recess at kindergarten, the two little ones didn't have their usual energy to run around and play. They sat by a big tree, listlessly spacing out.
"Hayden, you're going back to live with your mom. Your family is going to be reunited," Yara suddenly said.
Hayden turned to look at Yara. "I'm going back to my dad's house, not to live with her."
"Even if you're not living at her house, you'll still be a reunited family. Maybe your dad and mom will get back together," Yara said half-heartedly.
Hayden actually didn't know what was going on with them. He'd always been with Ambrose and had hardly seen Octavia. Even when he did see her, he didn't like her at all. The way she looked at him was very distant. He much preferred Scarlett's gentle gaze.
Thinking of Scarlett, he sighed, "I wish I were Scarlett's child."
Yara said bluntly, "But you're not."
Hayden suddenly had an idea. "What if I ask your mom to be my godmother? Then I could stay for a long time."
Yara looked at him and continued to shoot him down: "Your mom would have to agree to that."
"It's my own business. I'll decide for myself," Hayden said with conviction.
But Yara wasn't in a good mood either. She also wanted Ambrose to be her dad. Should she ask Ambrose to be her godfather too?
Yara kept this thought to herself, planning to discuss it with Scarlett when she got home that evening.
Scarlett's workday was like any other - she threw herself completely into her work. During breaks, she also looked into what Tatum was up to.
If Tatum wanted to make her life difficult, she wouldn't let Tatum off easy either.
She learned from Chase that after Brielle was admitted to the psychiatric hospital, Tatum had found a boyfriend. Although the man wasn't the owner of a big company, his assets in Silverlight City were worth over a hundred million dollars. Tatum had already moved into his place.
The man's name was Upton Harrison. He was a widower, seventy-five years old, and enjoyed playing golf.
Looking at this information, Scarlett had to admire Tatum. To live a wealthy life, she'd actually found Upton, who was twenty years older than her.
Just as she was looking at the information, Briar called. She answered the phone first.
