CHAPTER ELEVEN
Somewhere in the Nexus House…
After sending Nina away, Chris was consumed by a profound sense of misery and regret. He paced back and forth in his bedroom, his heart heavy with the weight of his decision. The echoes of their final confrontation stayed in his mind, haunting him with every step.
“I don't want to see you in the morning,” It was hard for him to bear, Nina was like his sister, a friend, and a lover. They always do things together so this decision was hard for him. And he was in total regret.
As he sank onto the couch, Chris buried his face in his hands, overcome by a wave of despair. He couldn't stop the feeling that he had made a terrible mistake, that he had let his anger and hurt cloud his judgment.
"Why did it have to come to this?" Chris muttered to himself, his voice filled with anguish. He had never imagined that their relationship would end in such pain and betrayal.
“Maybe, I should have given her time to explain. Could Nina ever lie to him?” Chris thought as he ran a hand roughly across his head In frustration. Even though he misses her, the deed has happened And there’s no going back. He would try to move past it but it wasn't happening.
Memories of their time together flooded his mind, each one a painful reminder of what he had lost. He remembered the laughter they shared, the moments of intimacy and connection that seemed so distant now.
"I never wanted it to end like this," Chris whispered, his words choked with emotion. He had loved Nina with all his heart, and the thought of life without her felt like a gaping hole in his chest.
But despite his longing and regret, Chris knew that he couldn't go back. He had made his decision, and now he had to live with the consequences.
As the tears streamed down his face, Chris vowed to carry on, to find a way to move forward without Nina by his side. But deep down, he knew that a part of him would always be empty without her, a constant reminder of what could have been.
In the dense forest….
As Zoa stirred awake, he found Nina already awake, her smile warming his heart. Returning her smile, he reached out to gently caress her cheek, feeling a rush of warmth and affection flood his senses.
"Good morning, Nina, you look more beautiful this morning." Zoa greeted softly, his voice filled with tenderness.
"Good morning, Zoa, thank you," Nina replied, her voice soft and melodic. "Did you sleep well?"
Zoa chuckled softly. "Like a log. How about you?"
Nina grinned mischievously. "I slept like a baby, thanks to your expert bed-making skills."
Their playful banter brought a sense of lightness to Zoa’s heart, compelling him to talk about how he felt.
"So, Nina," Zoa began, his tone hesitant. "Do you know anyone in Yoma?"
As they sat down to eat, Zoa couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over him. Knowing that Nina had someone in Yoma who cared for her eased his worries, if only slightly.
Nina's face lit up with recognition. "Yes, my grandmother, Nana. She'll take good care of us when we get there."
Zoa felt a surge of love toward Nina, knowing that she would provide her with a safe haven in her time of need.
As they ate, Zoa couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at him. He knew he couldn't ignore his feelings for Nina any longer, not when their lives were hanging in the balance.
"Nina," Zoa began tentatively, his voice tinged with vulnerability. "I need to tell you something."
Nina's gaze met his, her eyes searching his face for any sign of what he was about to say.
"I... I care about you, Nina," Zoa confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "More than I've ever cared about anyone before. And I want to be with you, no matter what."
Nina's expression softened, but a shadow of sadness flickered in her eyes. "Zoa, I... I appreciate your feelings for me. But I've been hurt before, betrayed by someone I trusted. And... and I'm carrying the evidence of that betrayal." she said, rubbing her stomach.
Zoa's heart sank as he realized the weight of Nina's words. He understood the pain and mistrust she carried, and he knew he couldn't erase the scars of her past.
With a heavy sigh, Zoa nodded in understanding. "I... I understand, Nina. I'll respect your decision. But know that I'll always be here for you, no matter what. I love you and I can't stop loving you."
As they finished their meal in silence, Zoa couldn't help but feel a sense of resignation settle over him. He had laid bare his heart to Nina, only to have it met with the painful reminder of her past. But amidst the ache of rejection, a glimmer of hope remained – a hope that one day, Nina might find it in her heart to trust again, and perhaps, to love him.
As they finished eating, Zoa's heart weighed heavily with unspoken feelings. With a gentle sigh, he urged Nina to continue their journey, he had started having feelings that something was about to happen.
"Nina, we need to keep moving," Zoa said softly, his voice tinged with a sense of urgency. "Time is not on our side, and I have a strange feeling that something is about to happen."
Nina nodded in agreement, her own nervousness was because of Zoa's sudden agita. Quickly, they gathered their belongings and set out once more into the depths of the forest, walking faster than usual. With Zoa’s face void of any emotions.
With each passing moment, Zoa couldn't shake the feeling of impending danger that hung in the air like a thick fog. But he knew that they had to keep moving forward, For Nina's safety, and for the hope of a future where they could be together.
