Chapter 79 Arthur's death
Chapter 79 Arthur's death
Arthur pulled the trigger.
Ruan moved faster.
He shoved Aysel hard to the ground and threw his body over hers.
The shotgun blast shattered the night air.
Ruan grunted.
Aysel felt his body jerk violently against her.
He was hit.
But Ruan didn't stop.
He pulled the gun from his waistband and aimed at Arthur's face.
He pulled the trigger twice.
Bang. Bang.
Arthur's evil smile vanished.
The shotgun slipped from his hands. It hit the boat floor with a thud.
Arthur fell backward and crashed into the water.
Aysel scrambled up from the rocks.
She looked at the empty boat and then at the water.
Then she looked at Ruan.
Ruan was on his knees, breathing fast.
His left hand covered his right shoulder, blood poured through his fingers.
"Ruan!" Aysel screamed.
Her heart sank.
She fell onto her knees beside him, the mud soaked her pants.
She grabbed his bloody arm, her hands shaking.
"You are shot," she sobbed.
"It’s just a scratch," Ruan lied.
His face was pale, and sweat dripped down his forehead.
He grabbed her face with his hand and searched her eyes.
"Are you hurt?" Ruan asked, his voice rough and breathless.
"I’m fine," Aysel cried. "You took the bullet for me!"
"I would take a million bullets for you," Ruan whispered.
He forced himself to stand up, groaning as pain hit him.
He grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the boat.
Police sirens blared behind them. Blue and red lights flashed over the island walls.
They had to leave now.
Aysel jumped into the boat, and Ruan climbed in right behind her.
He stumbled. Blood loss made his legs weak.
Aysel caught him, wrapping her arms around his waist to keep him up.
Ruan moved to the driver's seat and turned the key.
The engine roared to life.
He pushed the handle forward, and the boat shot into the ocean.
They sped over the crashing waves. The island and police lights faded into the darkness.
The wind was freezing and the rain was a bit heavy.
Aysel sat next to Ruan, pressing both hands hard against his bleeding shoulder.
"Keep pressure on it," Ruan grunted.
His eyes stayed fixed on the water ahead as he drove fast.
Aysel sobbed, blood covering her freezing fingers.
"We need a hospital, Ruan," Aysel cried over the loud engine. "You’re losing too much blood!"
"No hospitals," Ruan breathed.
"But you will die!" she screamed.
"I will not die," Ruan promised.
He looked at her and forced a tired smile.
"I have a safe house down the coast," Ruan said. "It has medical supplies. I just need to get us there."
Aysel nodded quickly, pressing her hands harder against his skin.
She looked down at her stomach, sadness hit her again.
She lost her baby already, she couldn’t lose her husband too.
"Please stay awake," Aysel begged. "Please keep your eyes open."
"I’m awake," Ruan whispered.
But his voice sounded softer now. His blinks were getting longer.
The boat bounced hard over a big wave.
Ruan groaned loudly, his body jerked.
He slumped forward against the steering wheel.
The boat swerved sharply, almost flipping over in the water.
Aysel screamed.
She grabbed the steering wheel with her hands and pulled it back straight.
"Ruan!" she yelled.
She shook his shoulder.
Ruan didn’t answer. His head rested heavily against the dashboard.
His eyes were closed.
He had passed out from pain and blood loss.
Aysel was completely alone.
She was sitting in a speeding boat, in the ocean, in the night.
She didn’t know how to drive a boat. She didn’t know where the safe house was.
She looked at Ruan’s pale, lifeless face.
Panic gripped her throat, she couldn't breathe.
But then, a strange, powerful feeling washed over her.
She had to save them no matter what.
It was just her and Ruan now.
He had saved her too many times, now it was her turn to save him.
Aysel gripped the steering wheel tightly, wiping her tears on her shoulder.
She pushed the throttle forward.
She stared out into the ocean.
"I got you," Aysel whispered to unconscious Ruan. "I’m going to save you."
Suddenly, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
She kept one hand firmly on the wheel and pulled the phone out with her other bloody hand.
It was an unknown number.
She answered quickly and put it on speaker to hear over the wind.
"Hello?" Aysel yelled.
"Aysel," a smooth voice said.
It was Seraphina.
Aysel's blood ran cold.
"You killed Arthur," Seraphina whispered, her voice sounding dead and crazy. "I just saw the news. The police just pulled his body from the water."
Aysel didn’t say a word, she just steered the boat, her heart hammering.
"You took everything from me," Seraphina cried into the phone. "You took my future husband and my son."
"Leave us alone!" Aysel screamed into the phone.
"Never," Seraphina said darkly.
Her laughter echoed through the phone speaker.
"Look right behind you, little mouse," Seraphina whispered.
Aysel quickly turned her
head. She looked out at the ocean behind the speeding boat.
Far away in the distance, two bright lights cut through the night.
It was another fast boat.
And it was speeding right toward them.
