Chapter 71 Dress fitting went wrong
Kai stared at the paper in the doctor’s hand. The bold black letters burned into his mind. His stomach dropped.
"What do you mean, injected?" Kai hissed. He grabbed Dr. Aris by the collar of his coat and pushed him hard against the wall. "She was locked inside a fortress all day! Nobody got close enough to put a needle in her arm!"
"I'm just reading the blood test results, Kai," the doctor choked out, lifting his hands in surrender. He looked terrified. "The drug is incredibly rare. It causes a sudden miscarriage and mimics high stress. It enters the bloodstream and kills the baby in a matter of hours, I am so sorry."
Kai let go of the doctor’s coat and backed away, covering his mouth with his hands. A wave of hot anger washed over him. Before he could say anything, the loud squeak of sneakers echoed down the hallway.
"Kai!" a voice screamed, cutting through the silence.
Mina ran down the corridor. Her hair was a wild mess. She wore her gray hoodie, and her eyes were red and swollen from crying. She crashed right into Kai’s chest, her knees giving out. He caught her and slid down the wall until they both sat on the floor.
"Tell me it’s a lie," Mina sobbed, burying her face in his neck. Her hands grabbed his shirt, twisting the fabric until her knuckles turned white. "Tell me the baby is okay, Kai."
Kai wrapped his arms tightly around her shaking shoulders and buried his face in her hair, feeling his own tears slipping down his cheeks.
"He’s gone, Mina," Kai whispered roughly, his voice cracking. He hated himself for saying those ugly words. "We were too late, the baby didn’t make it."
Mina let out a loud, agonizing wail, she hit his chest weakly with her fists, crying so hard she began to choke on her own breath. Kai held her tighter, rocking her back and forth on the tiles.
Inside the hospital room, Ruan knelt by the bed, his face buried in Aysel’s lap. His shoulders were completely still. The loud sobbing was replaced by dead silence.
Aysel didn’t cry anymore, she just stared at the blank white wall with her hand resting gently on Ruan’s hair. She felt completely empty, like someone had scooped out her soul and left cold, hollow air behind.
The door creaked open slowly. Kai walked into the room, leaving Mina outside with the nurses. He held the wrinkled paper tightly in his hand.
"Ruan," Kai whispered, his voice rough. He walked to the foot of the bed. "You need to look at this right now."
Ruan didn’t lift his head. He shook it slowly, his voice muffled against the blankets.
"Get out, Kai," he mumbled, sounding completely dead and exhausted. "Leave us alone. I don’t care about anything else today."
"You’re going to care about this," Kai insisted, stepping closer. He dropped the paper onto the bed next to Ruan’s arm. "Arthur may have poisoned Aysel, the doctor found a deadly drug in her blood."
Ruan stopped breathing, his body went rigid. He slowly lifted his tear-stained face off the bed, looking at Kai with dark, confused eyes.
"Poison?" Ruan whispered, grabbing the paper with a shaking hand and reading it quickly. His eyes widened madly. "No, that's impossible. I stopped Liana in the kitchen the other day, so she didn’t drink the tea. I swear she didn’t drink it."
"It wasn't a drink," Kai explained, pointing at the bottom of the paper. "It was an injection. A needle into her skin. Somebody poked her before Julian broke into the house."
Aysel stopped staring at the wall. Her eyes blinked slowly as the words echoed in her empty brain.
An injection.
A needle.
A prick on her skin.
She looked down at her own stomach, remembering the blue dress Ruan ordered for her a few days ago as a surprise. She remembered the workers from the boutique coming to the house last night to test the fit.
"The new dress," Aysel whispered, her voice dry and cracked. Both men turned their heads to look at her instantly.
"What did you say, baby?" Ruan asked quickly, standing up and cupping her pale face. "What about the dress?"
Aysel looked into Ruan's eyes, then she remembered something.
"You ordered that dress for me," she gasped out, her heart racing. Her hands grabbed Ruan's wrists. "The boutique sent their workers to test it on me last night. One older woman was zipping up the back and I felt a sharp sting on my hip."
Ruan's face went completely white. All the sadness drained from his skin.
"You told me it was just a scratch," he choked out, remembering how she flinched.
"I thought it was just the zipper as well," Aysel cried. Fresh tears sprang back into her eyes. She pulled her gown down slightly to show her bare hip, pointing at a tiny red bruise on her skin. "She said oops, smiled at me, Ruan. She told me the zip just caught my skin. She smiled at me while she injected poison into me!"
"Oh my god," Kai breathed out, taking a step back and running his hands through his hair. "Arthur must have done this, he slipped an assassin right past the gate using a dress fitting as a cover."
Ruan stared at the red dot on his wife's skin, the exact spot where his child was murdered.
He couldn't even cry, he stood tall, his dark eyes turning into cold pits of fury. His jaw clenched tightly.
"Cole!" Ruan roared, his voice echoing loudly, he turned to face the open door.
Cole ran into the room, looking terrified. He held his tablet against his chest.
"Call the dress boutique I ordered Aysel's from right now," Ruan ordered coldly, he grabbed his gun from his waistband, "Find out exactly who that older woman was, get her name and her address."
"Boss, I checked the guest logs when the doctor told me about the poison," Cole swallowed hard, looking down at his screen with shaking hands. "The boutique said they only sent two young girls to the island last night. They never sent an older woman."
"Then how did she get past my security?" Ruan yelled, stepping into Cole's space
"She used a fake ID, Ruan," Kai said softly, looking at the tablet screen over Cole's shoulder. He pointed at a blurry picture from the island's security cameras showing the older woman leaving the house.
Aysel leaned forward on the bed, squinting her swollen eyes to see the bright screen. A chill crept down her spine as she recognized the woman.
The woman wore a gray wig and big glasses, but as she glanced up at the security camera for a second, her face showed through the disguise.
"Ruan," Aysel whispered, her voice shaking with terror as she pointed at the screen. "That doesn't look like an assassin."
Ruan looked at the picture, his eyes wide with shock. He stared at the familiar jawline and the eyes hidden behind glasses.
"It's Seraphina," Ruan breathed out. He realized.
His own mother didn't only just trick them but also had the guts to walked right into his house, smiled in his wife's face, and murdered her own grandchild.
