Chapter 70 Poisoned

Chapter 70 Poisoned

The hospital hallway was completely cold, the bright lights buzzing loudly above Ruan's head and smelling of strong chemicals and medicine. Ruan paced back and forth on the floor, his suit stained with dried blood. His hands shook so much that he had to bury them deep in his pockets to hide them.

Kai sat on a plastic chair against the wall, rubbing his tired face with both hands and looking down at his dirty shoes. He didn’t say a word because there was nothing good to say.

"Why is it taking so long?" Ruan choked out, his voice cracking as he stopped pacing to stare at the closed door of the emergency room. "She just fainted, Kai. They just need to wake her up and tell me she is okay."

"They are running tests, Ruan," Kai whispered softly, keeping his head down. "The doctors have to make sure the baby is safe after everything that happened."

Ruan let out a loud, painful groan, leaning his broad back against the cold wall and sliding down until he sat on the floor, pulling his knees to his chest and hiding his face in his arms.

"If anything happens to them, I will end my own life," Ruan cried quietly into his sleeves, his shoulders shaking with heavy breaths. "I can’t live in this world without her, Kai. I just can’t do it."

Before Kai could respond, the door clicked open, making both men jump to their feet.

Dr. Aris walked out slowly, pulling his mask off his face. The moment Ruan met his eyes, all the warmth drained from his body.

"Where is she?" Ruan demanded, stepping toward the doctor, his chest heaving quickly. "Is my wife awake? Can I see her now?"

Dr. Aris swallowed hard, looking down at the floor for a moment and placing a hand on Ruan's shaking shoulder.

"Aysel is awake, Ruan," Dr. Aris said, his voice heavy. "She is physically going to be okay. We fixed her low blood pressure and gave her some strong fluids."

"And the baby?" Ruan asked quickly. He grabbed the doctor's coat with both hands. "Tell me my baby is fine, Aris, tell me right now!"

The doctor closed his eyes and let out a shaky breath, slowly shaking his head from side to side.

"I am so sorry, Ruan," Dr. Aris whispered, tears welling in his eye. "The extreme stress and trauma from the attack were too much for her body to handle. We tried everything we could, but we could not find a heartbeat."

The world stopped spinning.

The lights of the hallway seemed to shut off, and the loud hospital noises faded into nothing, leaving Ruan standing frozen in a terrifying, cold void of absolute nothingness.

"No," Ruan breathed out, taking a slow step backward. His hands fell limply from the doctor's coat. "No, you are a liar. My baby is strong, my baby is a fighter, check the stupid machine again!"

"Ruan," Kai choked out, stepping forward to grab his friend's arm and crying also.

"Do not touch me!" Ruan roared, his voice full of pain. Nurses down the hall stopped walking. "It is a mistake, she is fine and my baby is completely fine!"

Ruan shoved past the doctor, ripping the door open and running into the hospital room. His heart shattered into a million pieces with every step.

Aysel sat up slightly on the narrow bed, wearing a blue hospital gown. Her hair fell around her pale, tear-stained face. She stared blankly out the window, her hands resting flat against her stomach, pressing gently on her tummy again and again.

Ruan stopped at the foot of the bed, feeling his knees shake so much he could barely stand. He covered his mouth with his hand to shut a loud sob.

Aysel turned her head slowly to look at him, her eyes were empty and dark,

"Ruan," Aysel whispered, her voice sounding ghostly in the cold room as she stared at her hands. "Why is it so quiet inside me?"

Ruan fell to his knees on the floor, crawling over to her bedside. He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist and buried his crying face in her stomach, sobbing so loudly that the room echoed with his voice.

"I am so sorry," Ruan cried into her gown, his whole body shaking violently. "I am so sorry, Aysel. I failed you, I failed our baby."

Aysel didn’t scream or yell at him. She just stared down at his hair, feeling a cold numbness spreading from her heart to her toes.

"My baby is gone?" Aysel asked, her voice cracking, a tear slipping from her eye and falling onto Ruan's cheek.

"We lost him, Aysel," Ruan choked out, looking up at her face. His own was marred with tears and blood. "The doctor said the stress was too much and it killed our baby."

Aysel let out a high, agonizing wail that ripped from her throat. She grabbed Ruan's shirt, twisting the black fabric until her fingers cramped.

"No!" Aysel screamed, hitting his chest weakly with her fists and thrashing on the bed. "Bring him back, Ruan. Buy him back right now! You have all the money in the world, just fix it!"

"I can’t fix it," Ruan sobbed, catching her hands and pressing her fists against his heart. He held her tightly as she fell apart in his arms. "I would give every penny I own. I would even give my own life to bring him back to you, I swear."

"It is my fault," Aysel cried, burying her face in his neck and soaking his skin with her tears. "I let Julian take me, I was too weak to fight them off. I killed my baby!"

"Do not ever say that," Ruan growled through his tears, pulling her face back to meet his gaze. "Arthur killed our baby. Julian killed our baby. I will make sure they burn in hell for this. I promise you, Aysel, they will pay for every tear you shed today."

They held each other on the bed, crying until their voices were gone. It felt like their beautiful world had ended there in the hospital room.

Kai stood quietly in the hallway, wiping his wet face and watching the sad doctors and nurses, feeling utterly useless and heartbroken for his friends.

Suddenly, Dr. Aris hurried down the hall, looking pale and terrified as he held a piece of paper in hands. He walked straight up to Kai.

"Where is Ruan?" Dr. Aris asked quickly, his voice dropping to a scared whisper as he looked at the door of Aysel's room.

"He is with his wife, doc," Kai said softly, shaking his head. "Leave them alone right now just give them some time."

"I can’t wait, Kai," Dr. Aris insisted, pushing the paper into Kai's chest. His eyes were wide with shock. "The blood test results just came back from the lab and it shows that Aysel didn’t lose the baby from stress or trauma."

Kai frowned deeply, taking the paper. He looked at the confusing medical terms written on it, feeling a chill creeping up his spine.

"What the hell does this say?" Kai asked, pointing at something in the paper.

"It says she was poisoned," Dr. Aris whispered, looking nervously down the hallway to make sure nobody was listening, "someone injected a very rare, deadly drug straight into her bloodstream and it seems this happened for a while now, probably before this kidnap happened, and it was specifically designed to stop the baby's heart without leaving a single trace."
