Chapter 133 Traces Left
"Lucy, find out for me! I need to know who did this!"
"Yes, Mr. Hill." Lucy immediately arranged for a team to start the investigation.
Marvin lay on the hospital bed, his mind racing. This was no accident; someone must be secretly investigating the orphanage. If they traced it back to him, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"No, I need to come up with a plan," Marvin muttered to himself.
He immediately contacted a security firm abroad and hired a team of experienced bodyguards at a high price to protect him 24/7.
"From now on, you are to stay with me at all times, understood?" Marvin ordered the bodyguards.
"Understood, Mr. Hill," the bodyguards responded in unison.
Marvin felt slightly more at ease looking at the tall and strong bodyguards around him. With their protection, at least he didn't have to worry about his safety.
However, the real threat wasn't external but internal. He knew that to completely get out of this predicament, he needed a scapegoat.
"Lucy, get in touch with someone for me. I need to find someone to take the fall."
"Mr. Hill, this..." Lucy hesitated, "What if it gets exposed?"
"It won't be exposed," Marvin sneered, "I'll take care of everything."
A few days later, a homeless man was arrested by the police. He confessed to setting the orphanage on fire. Based on his confession, the police found so-called "evidence," and the case was closed.
Marvin watched the news report, a slight sneer on his lips.
Amelia finished dinner and returned to her room, her slender fingers swiping across her phone screen.
A local news push notification popped up, with the headline "Homeless Man Sets Orphanage on Fire, Arrested by Police." The accompanying photo showed a disheveled man with a vacant expression.
Amelia glanced at it coldly, a mocking smile on her lips.
She had known Marvin wouldn't sit idly by, but she hadn't expected him to find such a scapegoat.
"Really underestimated him," Amelia muttered to herself, tapping the screen to close the news page. She knew the truth, but she didn't have enough evidence to bring Marvin to justice.
"If I can't do it openly, I'll do it covertly." Amelia's eyes flashed as her slender fingers flew across the keyboard, sending an anonymous email. The email detailed Hill Corporation's tax evasion, illegal operations, and other violations, along with corresponding evidence.
These were all things she had uncovered through Jace's investigation, enough to give Hill Corporation a headache.
After finishing, Amelia stretched and headed to the living room to get a glass of water.
Just as Amelia reached the living room and poured a glass of warm water, she saw Dorian coming out of the study.
He was wearing loungewear and holding a tablet, his face as dark as storm clouds.
"Come here," Dorian's voice was low, with a hint of imperceptible pressure.
Amelia raised an eyebrow and lazily walked over to him. "What's up?" she asked indifferently, as if it had nothing to do with her.
Dorian handed her the tablet, showing a surveillance video. The footage was a bit blurry, but it was clear enough to make out someone in a black hoodie, mask, and baseball cap, throwing a sack on the ground and then beating it.
"A few days ago, Marvin was ambushed and beaten. The surveillance captured this video," Dorian's voice was icy, his sharp gaze fixed on Amelia as if trying to see through her.
Amelia glanced at the video nonchalantly, her expression unchanged. "Is that so? And then?" She took a sip of warm water, her demeanor relaxed, as if discussing the weather.
Dorian's eyes darkened as he watched her indifferent attitude. "This person, their build and movements, are very similar to yours." He paused, his tone heavy, "Tell me honestly, was it you?"
Amelia put down the glass, lying with a straight face, "Mr. Talbot, you shouldn't make baseless accusations. You can't just blame someone without evidence."
Dorian sneered, quickly taking the keychain from Amelia's waist. In the surveillance video, the person in black also had the same keychain on their waist, partially visible despite being covered by clothing.
"Now, do you still want to deny it?" Dorian's voice was cold, with a hint of mockery.
Amelia's eyes flickered as she looked at the photo. She hadn't expected Dorian to notice such a detail. It seemed he was more observant than she had thought.
"It was me," Amelia admitted straightforwardly, her tone calm and unflustered. Since she had been found out, there was no point in pretending.
Dorian was surprised by her candid admission. He had expected her to continue denying it, but she was so forthright.
"You've got some nerve, daring to lay a hand on Marvin," Dorian's tone carried a hint of anger, but more so curiosity.
"He deserved it," Amelia's tone was cold, without a trace of remorse.
Dorian looked at her, silent for a moment before asking, "What do you expect me to do with you?"
Amelia raised an eyebrow, her tone challenging. "What does Mr. Talbot plan to do with me?"
She asked, meeting Dorian's gaze without fear.
Dorian looked at Amelia, a mocking smile on his lips. "Deal with you? I could hand you over to the Hill family and let them handle it."
Amelia chuckled, unafraid. "Mr. Talbot, if you really wanted to hand me over to the Hill family, you wouldn't have bothered to inform me, would you?"
Her nonchalant attitude made Dorian's eyes darken further.
He walked over to the sofa and sat down, crossing his long legs elegantly. "Amelia, you are quite confident."
"Likewise," Amelia sat across from him, meeting his gaze without backing down.
The room fell into a brief silence, the atmosphere somewhat tense. Dorian picked up the lighter on the table, playing with it, his fingers deftly turning it, producing a crisp sound.
"I've taken care of this matter for you," he finally spoke, his tone low with a hint of warning. "Marvin won't trace it back to you, but don't let it happen again." He looked up, his gaze sharp on Amelia, "I hope you won't be so reckless in the future."
Amelia raised an eyebrow, a faint smile on her lips. "Is Mr. Talbot concerned about me?"
Dorian snorted, tossing the lighter onto the coffee table with a crisp sound. "I just don't want any trouble."
He stood up, looking down at Amelia, "You'd better remember what I said, or next time, I won't help you clean up the mess."
