Chapter 91
I looked up at him speechlessly.
The living room sofa was huge with plenty of empty spots, but Jason just had to come over here and squeeze in next to me.
With everyone watching, I couldn't really say anything, so I just scooted over a bit.
What was originally a very spacious single-seat sofa suddenly felt cramped the moment Jason sat down.
Jason took the opportunity to grab my hand and place it on his leg.
"Don't you think it's a bit crowded sitting like this?" I lowered my voice and spoke near Jason's ear.
Jason turned his head and whispered in my ear, "Not at all. I think this is just right. It makes us look really close."
I thought Jason would behave himself once he sat down.
Who knew that barely two minutes later, he'd stretch out his long arm around my waist, tilt his head, and rest it directly on my shoulder.
Like a koala, he just hung onto me like that.
I forced myself to suppress the urge to pull Jason off right then and there.
There were too many people around. It would look bad.
"You two are so sweet together!" Kelly suddenly burst out with an excited squeal.
She covered her mouth, her legs bouncing slightly, staring at the two of us.
Grandma Cooper was startled and clutched her chest, saying, "You scared me to death! Why are you yelling like that? I'm going to have a heart attack!"
Kelly showed no sign of toning it down. Instead, she got even more excited, "Jason and Sue are so happy together!"
I lowered my head somewhat awkwardly, feeling uncomfortable all over, my face turning even redder.
Not only did Jason not sit up straight, but he held me even tighter.
Lucy, sitting across from us, turned her eyes away, looking like she didn't want to watch.
Kelly didn't think there was anything wrong with her behavior at all. Her eyes sparkled as she looked at us, "Who chased who back in the day?"
I fell silent, not really wanting to answer this question.
Because talking about this stuff now was pointless.
Jason and I had already broken up. There was nothing worth discussing about what happened back then. It was all unimportant history.
Especially since Jason and I hadn't gotten back together!
We were still exes!
Kelly didn't pick up on my mood and remained immersed in her own excitement, looking at me eagerly, "You're so pretty, it must have been my cousin who chased you, right?"
I pressed my lips together, still silent.
But Jason suddenly laughed.
His voice was low and carried a casual tone that easily tickled the ears.
I glared at him discreetly, warning him not to say anything stupid.
Jason gently squeezed my hand and answered Kelly's question in a lazy tone, "Yeah, I chased her."
"Watching you two, I think I'm starting to believe in love again!" Kelly's voice grew more and more excited.
Grandma Cooper couldn't take it anymore and scooted away, saying, "Alright, hurry up and take this crazy girl away! Look at all this fuss. What does this look like!"
Lucy had just reached out to pull Kelly back when Kelly lunged at me.
She hung onto me just like Jason had, looking up at me eagerly, "Let's add each other on Facebook! I really like you so much, we definitely have to hang out sometime!"
Seeing how she looked like she absolutely wouldn't let go unless I agreed, I had no choice but to agree and pull out my phone.
Kelly scanned my QR code directly and cheered, "Great! Remember to accept my friend request!"
Right after she left, I heard another successful scan notification.
Charles was holding his phone, looking at me innocently, "Sue, I want to add you on Facebook too."
I nodded helplessly.
Under their watchful eyes, I accepted their friend requests and added notes.
Lucy came forward, grabbed Kelly, and headed out, scolding her irritably.
Only after Kelly's family left did the house finally quiet down.
That's when I secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Kelly was indeed very warm, but precisely because she was so enthusiastic, I found it a bit overwhelming.
If someone treated me badly, I wouldn't think much of it.
But when someone was so kind and enthusiastic toward me, I really didn't know how to handle it.
Seeing it was getting late, I wanted to leave with Jessica.
But Grandma Cooper stopped me, smiling as she said, "Don't go back today. The guest room is already prepared. Why don't you stay the night?"
I wasn't actually Jason's real girlfriend, so of course I couldn't stay here!
I shook my head and politely declined, "Thank you, but I have to work tomorrow and take Jessica to school. It's too far from here. I won't be able to manage."
"Alright then," Grandma Cooper looked reluctant, then turned and ordered Jason, "You drive Sue home, and make sure you see her all the way to her door!"
I turned to look at Jason and didn't refuse.
In the yard.
Thomas held Jessica reluctantly, his voice softening as he asked, "Jessica, can I pick you up from school tomorrow?"
"Yes!" Jessica nodded hard, her voice incredibly cheerful.
Grandma Cooper stood nearby and said, "You still have to work tomorrow. By the time you get off work, Jessica will have been out of school for ages. I'll go pick her up."
"Then I'll just leave work early! Jessica is so adorable, I can't bear to make her wait!" Thomas said matter-of-factly.
Of course, Grandma Cooper disagreed, "That won't do. Sue only agreed to let me pick up Jessica. Don't try to compete with me."
Thomas looked at me.
I had a helpless expression on my face.
Left with no choice, Thomas had to negotiate with Grandma Cooper, "How about this? Tomorrow we'll go pick up Jessica together. How's that?"
Only then did Grandma Cooper relent.
Seeing how much they cared about Jessica, I felt happy.
Jason personally carried Jessica to the car, and I got in the passenger seat.
Jessica was clearly happy, humming a song in the car.
When we reached the entrance to the apartment complex, I got out with Jessica, but didn't expect Jason to get out too.
Seeing he'd followed us all the way downstairs, I turned around helplessly and looked at him seriously, "Mr. Cooper, you should go back now."
Hearing this form of address, Jason's expression darkened.
His gaze moved from me to Jessica.
Then he bent down, picked up Jessica, and said matter-of-factly, "I want to spend more time with Jessica."
With that, he stepped into the elevator first.
Jessica, being held by her dad, cheered up, her little face turning rosy.
Watching this scene, I sighed inwardly but didn't say anything more.
It was perfectly normal for Jessica to depend on her dad.
Opening the door, I immediately got busy.
