Chapter 28

Chapter 28

Grandma Cooper asked, "Can what I saw with my own eyes be fake?"

Grandma Cooper pointed at Jason and said, "You tell me yourself, who was that pretty young lady I saw at home that day?"

Everyone's eyes instantly focused on Jason.

Thomas asked in disbelief, "Son, you've been hiding this even from me?"

Jason looked rather helpless, shook his head, and said, "She's not my girlfriend. Grandma misunderstood."

"Then who is she?" Grandma Cooper immediately became unhappy.

Grandma Cooper slapped the bed hard, looking at Jason with resentment in her eyes.

"Let me tell you! I really like that girl, and you even went to her house. You can't be irresponsible to her. The Cooper family absolutely cannot have any scumbags!"

Grandma Cooper was practically ready to order Jason to marry Sue the next day.

Jason scratched his head and said, "The situation between us is a bit complicated. I can't explain it all right now."

The next day, I went to work at DT Corp as usual and unexpectedly received a message from Jason.

Jason: [Can you come to the hospital? My grandma keeps insisting on seeing you.]

My instinct was to refuse.

What role would I play in meeting Jason's family?

His ex-girlfriend?

I carefully chose my words to decline.

Sue: [Sorry, Mr. Cooper, I have things to do today. I really can't make it.]

Jason: [If you don't come to the hospital, my grandma is threatening to go on a hunger strike.]

Jason: [Please do me a favor. I'm begging you.]

I suddenly felt dazed, as if seeing Kean from five years ago deliberately acting soft and cute in front of me.

Considering that Grandma Cooper was quite old and had just been resuscitated.

I eventually agreed.

I asked Brian for half a day off, drove to a nearby fruit shop to buy a fruit basket for visiting patients, and headed straight to the hospital.

When I arrived at the hospital, I saw Jason walking over with his long strides from a distance.

"What are you doing here?" I was puzzled.

Jason very naturally took the fruit basket from my hands and said, "You don't need to buy these things next time."

He paused, then answered my question, "I came down to meet you, so you wouldn't get lost."

The paths inside the hospital were indeed hard to navigate.

I nodded, accepting this explanation.

Following behind Jason, we soon arrived at Grandma Cooper's VIP ward.

When Grandma Cooper saw me come in, her face immediately showed a delighted smile.

She waved at me, gesturing for me to sit down by the bed.

"Grandma, are you feeling better?" I smiled as I sat down.

Grandma Cooper affectionately held my hand, looking at me with a beaming smile. "My granddaughter-in-law is so beautiful!"

My whole body stiffened, and I said awkwardly, "Grandma, you've misunderstood. Mr. Cooper and I are not in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship."

Actually, we were in an ex-boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.

"That's not important. I liked you the moment I saw you. I've decided you're the only granddaughter-in-law for the Cooper family."

Grandma Cooper glared at Jason warningly and said, "No one can argue with me!"

I didn't expect Grandma Cooper to like me this much.

Helplessly, I could only turn to Jason for help.

I had hoped Jason would help explain. Wouldn't this just be getting Grandma Cooper's hopes up for nothing?

Countless women in Seaside City could potentially become Grandma Cooper's granddaughter-in-law in the future, but I was the one exception.

Unexpectedly, Jason shrugged, giving me a helpless look.

My heart tried to explain, but completely gave up.

Grandma Cooper held my hand and asked gently, "What's your name? Where do you live? What do your parents do?"

"My name is Sue. I grew up in Sunrise City before." I slowly lowered my head, my voice very soft.

I had moved to Sunrise City later. As for where my family was before, my mom never told me.

And I didn't dare ask.

Past events, like my dad, were absolute taboos that could never be mentioned in front of my mom.

Grandma Cooper seemed to sense something and didn't continue asking, which made me completely relieved.

I chatted with Grandma Cooper for a while longer. Seeing that it was about time, I stood up.

"You should still eat properly and not go on hunger strikes, okay?" I thought about it and still gave this reminder.

Grandma Cooper waved at me with a smile and said, "Just come visit me often."

I looked at Grandma Cooper helplessly but still nodded gently.

Coming out of the ward, I turned around and looked up at Jason, who had followed me out.

"Mr. Cooper, please explain to Grandma that I'm not your girlfriend."

Jason put his hands in his pockets and shrugged. "Explaining won't help. You saw it yourself - Grandma's attitude is very firm."

I pressed my lips together slightly.

My heart felt like it was pressed down by a huge stone, so heavy I could barely breathe.

This treatment that shouldn't belong to me at all had suddenly fallen on me.

Like a thief, I stood trembling in a position that wasn't mine.

Grandma Cooper had met me before, and now she was so warm to me, even saying I was her granddaughter-in-law.

Would Jason think I deliberately appeared in front of Grandma Cooper, that this was a way of getting close to him?

If I explained to Jason, would he believe me?

Walking toward the elevator with Jason, I secretly observed his expression.

I took a deep breath and finally gathered the courage to speak, "Jason, I didn't tell Grandma anything. I never told Grandma about what happened between us before."

After speaking, I nervously waited for Jason's response.

The elevator arrived just then. Jason didn't say anything and stepped into the elevator.

Inside the elevator, neither of us initiated conversation.

A trace of bitterness spread in my heart.

I shook my head secretly.

In Jason's eyes, I was this kind of untrustworthy woman.

Coming out of the elevator, Jason suddenly spoke, "You don't need to take what Grandma said to heart."

I was slightly stunned. I wanted to say something more, but when I looked up and met Jason's deep eyes, all my words got stuck in my throat.

In the end, I just nodded gently. "Okay, I'll go now, then. Goodbye, Mr. Cooper."

I got in my car.

Just as I was about to start it, I suddenly heard Jason calling me, "Sue."

I turned to look.

Jason gazed at me with deep eyes, approaching step by step.

I instinctively held my breath, my pupils dilating slightly as I watched him.

In that instant, I seemed to see Kean from five years ago.

He used to like doing this - calling my name first, making me watch him walk toward me.

Except before, he would give me a warm, reassuring hug after getting close.

I felt lost and regretful, faintly suppressing the impulse to throw myself into Jason's arms.

I instantly pulled myself out of the memory.

"Goodbye," I said goodbye softly, stepped on the gas, and drove away.

Lily finally came back. I specially prepared a hot pot at home.
