Chapter 27
I haven't seen Jason for the past few days.
The days passed by in busy work.
That evening, after a very important meeting with a female client, Brian personally escorted her back to her hotel to rest.
As Brian and I left the hotel together, we ran right into Jason leading a group of people inside.
He glanced at me with cold, distant eyes.
I clenched my fists.
Jason didn't speak to me and walked straight past.
But Assistant Samuel stopped and greeted me with a smile, "Ms. Wilson, what a coincidence running into you here."
He glanced at Brian, then asked me, "Are you here meeting a client?"
I nodded and said, "Yes, I just dropped off a client."
"Us too. Still working this late, it's tough for everyone." Assistant Samuel gestured toward Jason.
I nodded again.
After a brief chat, I left the hotel with Brian.
Samuel quickly returned to Jason's side.
Weekend break.
At Jessica's insistence, I accompanied her to the library.
Three hours flew by.
Jessica was still sitting on the bench with no sign of moving.
I sighed helplessly, propped my chin on my hand, and asked softly, "Jessica, we've been reading here for so long. Want to go out for a bit?"
I pointed out the window and said, "The sun is really nice today."
Jessica looked up and followed my finger.
"Okay," she answered sweetly.
Holding Jessica's hand as we left the library, the sun felt warm on our bodies.
Jessica has her own ideas now, so this was a good time to help her develop some interests.
I crouched down in front of Jessica, met her eyes calmly, and asked, "Would you like to learn something as a hobby?"
I thought Jessica would say she wanted to learn painting.
After all, when Jessica was alone at home, she loved to draw.
After thinking for a moment, Jessica said seriously, "Mom, I want to learn taekwondo."
I was surprised and said, "That's really tough."
Jessica said firmly, "I'm not afraid of hard work."
Seeing Jessica's determination, I didn't say more and nodded in agreement. "Okay, I'll look into signing you up when we get home."
"Thank you, Mom!" Jessica cheered.
She pulled me to go explore other places, then suddenly exclaimed, "Mom! Someone over there seems to have fainted!"
Jessica immediately ran toward the distance.
I turned to look and saw an elderly person with white hair lying on the ground not far away!
I quickly rushed over.
Getting closer and seeing the person's face clearly, I was shocked, and my eyes widened.
Isn't this Jason's grandmother?
"Mom..." Jessica looked at me with worried eyes.
This was her first time encountering such a situation.
I patted her shoulder reassuringly and had her wait quietly beside me.
While calling 911, I crouched down to check Grandma Cooper's condition.
After describing Grandma Cooper's situation to the 911 operator, I followed their instructions to give her emergency first aid while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
Jessica quickly caught on and held my phone for me so I could better help Grandma Cooper.
When Grandma Cooper was loaded into the ambulance, she had no family with her, so Jessica and I had to go along.
In the ambulance, after the professional medical staff took over, I finally had a moment to call Jason.
The phone rang several times before Jason answered.
"Hello, what's up?" Jason's cool voice came through the phone, deliberately distant.
I had no time to worry about his strange tone and got straight to the point, "Grandma Cooper fainted on the street. We're in the ambulance now, heading to the hospital."
"I'll be right there!" Jason responded quickly, his voice clearly anxious.
After hanging up, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. At least she was safe now.
Looking up, I met Jessica's confused and curious gaze.
She blinked and said, "Mom, I think I just heard Dad's voice."
"Yes, this is your dad's grandmother, which means she's your great-grandmother." I nodded and explained.
This was Jessica's first time meeting anyone from the Cooper family besides Jason.
She blinked, curiously watching the unconscious Grandma Cooper.
Before we reached the hospital, Grandma Cooper woke up.
She looked confused at first.
The moment she saw me, she relaxed.
"The patient is still very weak and can't speak," the nurse explained.
I nodded, bent down to hold Grandma Cooper's hand, and said softly, "Grandma Cooper, don't worry, we're already in the ambulance. You're going to be fine."
Grandma Cooper nodded while looking toward Jessica.
My heart instinctively tensed up.
Jessica shyly hid behind me, peeking out with half her little head showing.
Fortunately, Grandma Cooper didn't have the strength to say much at that moment.
When Jason rushed over, the light outside the operating room was still on.
"Grandma is still in surgery." Seeing him gasping for breath, clearly having run all the way, I paused, then couldn't help but comfort him, "Don't be too nervous. Grandma will be fine."
Jason looked at me.
For the first time, I saw gratitude clearly in his eyes.
"Thank you for what you did for Grandma today," Jason said.
I shook my head and said, "Don't mention it. I would have helped anyone today."
"Since you're here, I'll go now." I nodded at Jason and took Jessica's hand to leave.
"Let me drive you home later," Jason stopped me, saying, "I'll take you to dinner."
"No need to trouble yourself. Grandma still needs someone here. Jessica and I should go, we have things to do this afternoon." I avoided Jason's complex, intense gaze and declined softly.
Jessica also said very sensibly, "Uncle Jason, goodbye."
Jason's expression softened slightly, and he raised his hand to wave at Jessica.
What I didn't see was that after I turned around, Jason slowly clenched his fists, his lips parting, but in the end, he said nothing.
Walking out of the hospital with Jessica, the sun shone on us again, warm and comforting.
A few middle-aged people passed by us, and one of them turned to look at us.
He hesitantly said something to the person beside him, who shook his head and pulled him quickly into the hospital.
I didn't pay much attention and took Jessica to catch a taxi to the library.
My car was still parked there.
That evening, after dinner, I thought about what had happened in the afternoon.
I wondered how Grandma Cooper was doing now.
The next moment, my phone vibrated twice.
I received a message from Jason.
Jason: [Grandma is out of danger now. Thank you.]
Sue: [No problem.]
I thought that should be the end of it.
But at the same time, a scene was playing out at the hospital that was giving Jason a huge headache.
"No! I want my granddaughter-in-law to come see me!"
Grandma Cooper leaned against the hospital bed, throwing a tantrum like a child.
Thomas asked in confusion, "Mom, Jason doesn't have any women around him! Where would a granddaughter-in-law come from?"
