Chapter 228
If this had happened before, I would have definitely felt hurt.
But now, all I feel is calm.
"Cora, do I need to remind you that you already publicly disowned me as your daughter?"
"You!"
Cora clearly didn't expect me to be so heartless. She screamed , "Sue, stop being so smug! You're my child. Without me, where would you be?"
"Oh, so you do remember I'm your daughter?"
I drawled lazily.
Cora was about to say something when Luke took the phone from her.
Luke sighed helplessly, "Sue, Mom was just too angry before, so her tone wasn't great. You're not really going to hold it against her, are you?"
"You didn't used to be like this. Why have you become so cold now? We just want to ask you for a small favor. There's no need to be so harsh, right?"
"Besides, for you, helping me find a job should be really simple. You won't even do something that easy?"
Listen to that—such self‑righteous words again.
I just found it funny, "Why should I help you?"
"We're family."
Luke said without hesitation.
I curled my lip,“I’m a Cooper now, not family with you anymore.”
"What do you mean?"
Luke was stunned.
Cora snatched the phone back.
"Sue! Tell me honestly, did you get a marriage certificate with Jason?"
I answered frankly, "Yeah, we got it right after New Year."
Cora asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
I replied, "Tell you for what? So you could wish me a happy marriage?"
Even though I couldn't see Cora's face, I could easily imagine her expression twisted with anger.
Cora said through gritted teeth, "I didn't agree. How dare you get married without my permission?"
"Because I wanted to."
I found Cora's sudden possessiveness really baffling.
When I was little, she could hardly wait to stop dealing with me and let me fend for myself.
Now that I'm getting married, she suddenly cares?
"Whatever! But no matter what, I raised you. Now that you're married, you should give back to your family."
"Now have Jason solve Luke's job problem, or this won’t be over.”
After hearing Cora's words,I didn’t argue back right away. Instead, I asked, "Is this your condition for cutting ties with you guys?"
The other end of the phone suddenly went silent.
A moment later, someone hung up on me.
The room became quiet again.
I curled my lip in boredom.
Those two are really no fun.
But I really didn't expect the Miller family to actually take everything out on Luke.
Meanwhile, at the place Cora was renting, she slammed her fist on the table. "Damn it! How dare she! She got married behind my back!"
Cora was so angry her chest heaved.
"I didn't agree—how dare she!"
Luke watched Cora rage in silence, a flash of impatience in his eyes.
He sighed.
"Mom, see? I told you this approach wouldn't work. Sue doesn't acknowledge us at all now. How could she possibly help me find a job?"
Cora felt bad that Luke still didn’t have a job.
She took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down.
“How is that impossible? Even if she doesn't want to admit it, she's still my daughter, and you're her real big brother. Can she really not help?"
Luke asked, "So what do we do now?"
Cora pulled at her lips, "If she won't help, we'll find someone else."
Glacier Corp, CEO's office.
Cora sat on the sofa, her expression cold and her posture arrogant, staring icily at Jason.
“Did you register your marriage with Sue?”
Jason leaned back casually in his office chair, looking at Cora with a distant expression.
“Is there a problem?”
Cora frowned, her tone displeased, "Of course there's a problem! I raised my daughter for over twenty years, and you just married her like that. Shouldn't you give me some compensation?"
Jason's gaze was calm, "I gave everything you mentioned to Sue."
"Give it to her for what? Give it to me!"
Cora's volume shot up instantly.
"No."
Jason pressed the intercom button, "Come in."
Samuel walked in with his eyes lowered and said respectfully, “Mr. Cooper.”
"Do you know these two people?"
Jason gestured toward Cora and Luke with his chin.
Samuel nodded, "I do. They're Mrs. Cooper's former mother and older brother."
Jason said, "From now on, dogs and these two people are not allowed to enter Glacier Corp. Got it?"
Luke's face changed, "You're married to Sue now. Our families are in-laws. How can you treat us like this?"
He had originally hoped he might be able to join Glacier Corp.
Glacier Corp's employee benefits were famously good throughout Seaside City and beyond.
If he could join Glacier Corp, plus with Jason being his brother-in-law, wouldn't his future be set?
He had never expected Jason to be so heartless.
"Didn't you cut ties?"
Jason asked, surprised.
His gaze swept coldly over Cora and Luke, his voice suddenly icy.
"Did I give you too much face? If it weren't for Sue, you wouldn't even have the right to see me. Understand?"
Samuel spoke at the right moment, "You two, please come with me."
Seeing Cora not moving, Samuel added, "If you don't want to leave in a dignified way, we have other options."
Luke's expression changed slightly.
Cora wanted to say something but Luke pulled her back.
Luke shook his head slightly at Cora, then gave Jason one last hesitant look before following Samuel out.
After Samuel saw them out, he returned to the office.
"Mr. Cooper, I've looked into everything. Luke's job was sabotaged by the Miller family. The two of them went to Mrs. Cooper first, and only came to Glacier Corp after she refused them."
Jason nodded, "Got it."
He narrowed his eyes slightly, "Since they like looking for jobs so much, let them keep looking."
Samuel shivered and nodded repeatedly, "Understood."
Samuel thought, 'Now they're really done for. Of all people to mess with, they had to upset Mr. Cooper.'
Thanks to the new partnership Casey sent over, Ophelia's attitude toward meimproved a lot.
Since I was working from home, she didn't assign me much work either.
After finishing the tasks I had, I closed my laptop and went downstairs to the kitchen.
To avoid unnecessary danger, Lila and Imogen had been handling the shopping these past few days.
Tonight I planned to make a cake to properly celebrate landing this new partnership.
I hummed a little tune while whipping cream.
Lila smiled beside me, "Mrs. Cooper is in a good mood today."
I nodded, "Yeah."
Not only did I tell off people I didn't like, but work was going smoothly too.
Of course I was happy!
The cream was ready. I put it in a piping bag, and just as I was spreading cream on the cake base, someone approached from behind me.
The next moment, I fell into a familiar warm embrace.
"Honey, what are you making?"
I felt a bit uncomfortable and squirmed, "Honey, let go first, and also..."
I wanted to say there were other people around.
But when I looked around, Lila, who had been beside me, had long since disappeared.
When did she leave?
