Chapter 214
I called Tamsin ahead of time to let her know I'd be picking up Jessica from Old Mansion a bit later today.
She agreed right away.
Only then did I feel relieved enough to continue working.
I completely forgot that I now had a husband, so I didn't call Jason.
I was still working when my phone suddenly rang.
I finished reading the last paragraph of the document I was working on before checking who was calling and answering.
"Honey, I'm working late today, so I'll be home a bit later."
Jason's voice on the other end carried clear displeasure.
"I'll come pick you up."
"No need, I drove..."
Before I could finish, he hung up.
Whatever, if he wants to come, let him come.
I shook my head, put down my phone, and continued working.
Starting a new job always takes time to adjust.
The more time I invested, the more familiar with it I became.
When Ophelia finally finished for the day, she came out of her office with her bag in hand.
She looked surprised to see I was still there.
"You haven't left yet?"
I answered honestly, "Ms. Blake, I'm your secretary. I thought you might need me while you were working."
Hearing this, Ophelia's expression softened a little.
She shook her head gently, her tone softening, "You don't need to work overtime with me. From now on, once you finish your assigned work, you can leave at your regular time."
I nodded. "Okay, Ms. Blake."
Ophelia said, "Let's go together."
"Okay."
We took the elevator down together. Thinking that Jason was coming to pick me up, I got off on the first floor.
After saying goodbye to Ophelia, I had just walked out of the office building when Ispotted Jason's car parked by the roadside.
He was leaning against the car, staring intently at the building.
"Honey!"
A smile appeared on my face as I walked over quickly.
Jason came toward me, naturally taking my bag and holding my slightly cold hand in his warm one.
His tone carried both displeasure and concern. "Why are they making you work overtime on your first day?"
I naturally leaned against him. "It's not like that. I just didn't understand the situation on my first day. My boss specifically told me that from now on, I can leave on time once I finish my work. I don't need to stay late."
Thinking about it, I added, "And I think Ms. Blake is pretty nice. She's that type of strong, capable woman who gets straight to the point."
"If it's too tiring, just quit. I don't want you working so hard."
Jason shook his head, not caring at all about my assessment of Ophelia.
I finally found this job—no way was I quitting!
I shook my head firmly. "It's not tiring at all. I'm full of energy."
Jason smiled helplessly and pinched my cheek with his other hand.
"Alright, whatever you say."
We didn't go home. Instead, we headed straight to Old Cooper Mansion.
Tamsin knew I’d be working late, so she had Linda prepare dinner ahead of time.
After dinner, we took Jessica home.
On the way back, my thoughts kept drifting.
Now that I was working and there was quite a bit to do, I'd probably have to work overtime often.
That meant I wouldn't have as much time to take care of Jessica.
By the time we got home, Jessica quietly went upstairs to sleep.
I washed up, then stepped out of the bathroom drying my hair.
Jason was leaning against the headboard, scrolling through his iPad.
I looked at him and said softly, "Honey, do you think we should hire a housekeeper?"
Jason looked up , a little surprised.
After a brief pause, he nodded.
"Okay, but let's just have two people come over from Old Mansion. It's more reassuring to have people we already know."
That made sense, so I nodded in agreement.
If we hired someone from outside, I might worry about whether they'd be like the housekeepers we'd had before.
The servants at Old Cooper Mansion had all worked for the Cooper family for years and were trustworthy.
The next day.
As soon as Jason got to the office, he called Samuel in.
"Look into Polaris Company."
Samuel moved quickly and returned with information shortly after.
"Polaris Company's boss is Ophelia. She quit her previous company and started Polaris Company. It's just a small startup right now, nothing much to see. Currently, their business is kept afloat by a few old clients Ophelia brought from her previous company."
He paused and continued, "Ophelia is a workaholic who does things decisively. People's opinions of her are mixed."
Samuel couldn't figure out why Jason would suddenly be curious about Polaris Company.
He studied Jason's expression and asked tentatively, "Mr. Cooper, are you planning to acquire Polaris Company?"
Jason shook his head. "My wife went to work as Ophelia's secretary."
Samuel was surprised. "Mrs. Cooper went to Polaris Company? Why? If she wanted to work, wouldn't it be better to just come to Glacier Corp?"
No matter how you looked at it, Glacier Corp was the best choice in the industry.
Plus, I was Jason's wife, so no one would dare say anything if I worked there.
Why suffer and work hard somewhere else for lower pay?
Jason rubbed his temples but didn't say anything.
Samuel realized he'd said too much. After thinking, he asked, "Mr. Cooper, should we do something for Polaris Company..."
Jason waved his hand. "No need. You can go now."
He was investigating Polaris Company only to ensure my safety at work.
At the very least, he wanted to make sure there was no workplace bullying or other problems.
Since he'd agreed, he chose to respect my decision and not interfere with my work.
Meanwhile, at Polaris Company.
It only took me one day to research all the projects and clients the company was currently handling.
This made Ophelia very satisfied.
In the afternoon, she told me, "Get ready. We're leaving in half an hour to visit Casey West."
Casey was currently a potential client and an important prospect Polaris Company wanted to land.
I acknowledged and immediately started organizing materials.
As if suddenly remembering something, I looked up Casey's family background.
Casey married young and was devoted to his wife. They had a daughter about Jessica's age.
On the way to the West Group, Ophelia instructed me, "Once we get there, you need to time it well. Leave the rest to me."
I nodded gently.
We arrived at the West Group, and Casey's secretary took us to a meeting room to wait.
"Please wait a moment. Casey is in a meeting."
"Okay."
Ophelia glanced at the time and frowned slightly, but didn't say anything more.
I discreetly observed her.
From these two days of working together, I knew she was someone who valued punctuality.
We'd scheduled the meeting with Casey for 2:30 PM. He was clearly late now, but since we were the ones wanting to work with him, we couldn't say anything.
Soon half an hour passed, and Casey still hadn't arrived.
Ophelia kept checking the time.
I stood up. "Ms. Blake, I'm going to the restroom."
After leaving the meeting room, I asked the receptionist for directions to the restroom and headed straight there.
"Baby, promise Mommy you won't cry anymore, okay?"
Before I went in, I heard a gentle female voice inside.
I paused.
"Mommy knows you don't want to go to kindergarten, but we still need to discuss this with daddy. If daddy agrees, we won't go, okay?"
