Chapter 213
In the kitchen, Jason wore a pink apron with a serious expression, as if he were doing something extremely important.
But what was that messy lump of dough on the cutting board?
And it was all over the counter too.
The once clean and tidy kitchen had now been turned into a flour-covered mess by Jason.
I leaned helplessly against the kitchen doorway, hesitating to go in.
"Honey, what are you doing?"
"Babe?"
Jason turned to look at me, his eyes lighting up.
He pointed at the dough on the cutting board like it was a treasure. "I'm making a cake."
"A cake?"
I looked at the dough, wanting to say something but stopping myself.
After all, Jason wanted to surprise me, so I didn't want to dampen his enthusiasm.
"I saw online that many people say making cakes is easier than cooking. Today's your job interview, so I wanted to celebrate for you."
Jason noticed something was off from my expression.
His thin lips pressed together slightly as he lowered his eyes.
"Leave this to me."
I rolled up my sleeves and walked into the kitchen.
"This isn't the right flour for making cakes, but it's perfect for making noodles."
Jason consciously moved aside.
While I kneaded the dough, Jason started cleaning up the kitchen mess he'd made.
The water in the pot boiled, and I cut the dough into small pieces.
The dough pieces tumbled in the boiling water, the sound of bubbling water particularly soothing.
The noodles were done. I poured the sauce I'd made last night over them, and the aroma filled the air.
Jason brought the noodles to the table. Jessica's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Daddy, you made this?"
Jason raised an eyebrow, "Am I really that incompetent in your eyes?"
Jessica pouted and looked at me as I came out behind Jason.
"It must have been Mommy! Daddy, you can't do this. The teacher said good children should be honest and face their shortcomings bravely, not deceive themselves."
Jason's mouth twitched.
I held back a laugh, "The noodles we're eating today were kneaded by Daddy, so half of this meal was made by Daddy."
Jessica nodded thoughtfully.
"I get it, so Mommy was the finishing touch!"
She was getting better and better at talking.
"Alright, let's eat."
After dinner, Jessica went upstairs to do her homework.
Her tutors all said Jessica was very talented and could continue deeper studies.
Jessica also loved the process of constantly learning and enriching herself, spending more and more time on it.
Jason went to wash the dishes. After going upstairs to shower, I started preparing the things I'd need for work tomorrow.
It had been so long since I'd worked.
Just thinking about starting work tomorrow made me a little excited.
Before bed that night, Jason kept pestering me to make love.
I refused him firmly. "No, I have to work tomorrow, and it's my first day. I can't be late."
Jason's eyes reddened as he held me tightly.
He bit my ear in dissatisfaction, his voice low and hoarse.
"You temptress, you're the one who seduced me!"
I blinked innocently, "How? I didn't do anything."
"You breathed."
What's wrong with him!
Jason kissed me fiercely, as if he wanted to devour me whole.
But in the end, he didn't do anything.
Jason got up from the bed panting heavily and headed straight into the bathroom.
Hearing the sound of water from the bathroom, I smiled.
The next day I got up early, made breakfast for the three of us, and for the first time in a while, we went out together as a family.
Jason took Jessica to kindergarten while I drove myself to Polaris Company.
"Since it's your first day, familiarize yourself with these materials first, then make a summary document of these files for me."
Ophelia placed a stack of documents on my desk, her tone calm.
"Okay."
I glanced at the thickness of the files.
There were a lot, but it was not impossible to complete.
Ophelia nodded without saying more and turned to leave.
I took a deep breath, immediately calmed down, and threw myself wholeheartedly into work.
If I were a workplace newbie, I might have been flustered.
But having worked at DT Corp for so long, I had similar experience, so I handled it pretty well.
I spent the whole morning reading through all the materials and making key summaries.
As lunchtime approached, Seraphine came to find me.
"Sue, everyone's planning to order takeout. What do you want to eat? We'll order together."
I was stunned at first, then belatedly realized.
Polaris Company was small and didn't have a staff cafeteria.
"Sure, what are you guys eating? I'll have the same."
I agreed.
This way I could see if the other two were easy to get along with.
Soon lunch arrived.
To my surprise, Ophelia actually ate with us too.
When I was Brian's assistant before, although I rarely ate with Brian, I knew his lunches were specially delivered from fancy restaurants.
Ophelia didn't like talking while eating. Most of the conversation was between Seraphine and the other two.
Their topics were all about daily life.
From their conversation, I learned that besides Seraphine who was already married, the other two young women were fresh college graduates, unmarried, and hadn't even dated yet.
One of them, a young woman named Marcella Shaw, looked at me curiously, "Sue, you're not married yet, right?"
"I am, actually."
I smiled.
"Really?"
Marcella's eyes widened in shock, her mouth opening in disbelief, "No way! Sue, you look so young, basically the same age as us!"
Another young woman named Jade Marie nodded in agreement, "Exactly! Sue, are you joking with us?"
I shook my head, "Not only am I married, I have a five-year-old child."
At these words, even Ophelia looked up at me.
Although my resume did state I was married with children, saying it out loud felt different.
Everyone looked surprised and curious.
I smiled helplessly, "Our company doesn't have a rule against married women with children working here, does it?"
"No."
Ophelia shook her head.
Marcella added, "It's mainly because you look so young, Sue. No one would think you're already a mom of a five-year-old!"
I didn't want to dwell on this topic, so I changed the subject.
Ophelia ate quickly and was the first to return to her office after finishing.
I watched Ophelia's retreating figure, silently marveling.
What a decisive and efficient career woman.
Seraphine reminded me, "Don't worry about the boss. That's just how she is. Our company does have a normal lunch break."
I nodded gently.
My first lunch at the new company left me with a pretty good feeling.
After eating, I rested at my workstation for a bit, then continued working in the afternoon.
I was busy the entire day and finally finished the work Ophelia assigned me just before closing time.
But my gaze fell on the boss's office, where the lights were still on.
Although it was already after work hours, since the boss hadn't left yet, as her secretary, I couldn't very well leave first.
I shook my head and sat contentedly at my workstation to work overtime.
