Chapter 162
Thomas gently patted Jessica's head with a warm smile, "You guys go ahead. I'll keep your great-grandma company. She'll throw a fit if she's left alone at home."
Helen felt awkward at this moment too.
She looked at Jason pleadingly, "Jason."
Jason frowned and turned his head away, clearly unwilling to acknowledge her.
Helen looked at Jason, then at Thomas who was avoiding her like the plague, and left feeling hurt.
Only then did Thomas breathe a sigh of relief and looked at Jason awkwardly, "Jason, don't read too much into this, I..."
Jason interrupted him, "You're not getting back together with her, right?"
"Of course not!"
"All these years of not remarrying—you weren't waiting for her, were you?"
"No! I just think I'm doing fine on my own, plus I'm busy with work. I haven't even thought about it."
Thomas denied it repeatedly.
Jason nodded and said nothing more, pulling Jessica and me along as he strode away.
In the parking lot.
I sat down in the passenger seat, with Jason driving.
From getting in the car until now, Jason hadn't said a word.
I could feel he wasn't in a good mood, but with Jessica here, I didn't ask.
After the family of three ate out, we went home.
Jessica was unusually clingy tonight.
Normally she only needed one picture book before bed, but tonight she eagerly had me read three books to her.
Seeing her clearly exhausted but forcing herself to stay awake, I helplessly touched her cheek.
"Alright Jessica, it's bedtime now. Let's sleep first and play more tomorrow, okay?"
Jessica held my hand, her eyes looking at me all dewy.
"Mommy, am I still your baby?"
My heart jumped, and I quickly comforted her gently, "Of course! No matter what, you'll always be Mommy's baby."
I paused and asked, "What's wrong lately? Why are you asking this?"
Jessica lowered her head, holding my hand and refusing to let go, saying nothing.
I waited patiently.
After a moment, Jessica finally said slowly, "Ever since Daddy moved in to live with us, Mommy spends much less time with me."
"It's not that I think Daddy is bad—I like Daddy too, but Daddy is always competing with me for Mommy."
Jessica got more and more upset as she spoke, finally looking at me pitifully.
"Mommy, now that Daddy is here, do you love Daddy more?"
Now I understood.
I never expected my baby girl would actually compete with Jason for my attention and get jealous.
My heart felt warm.
I held Jessica in my arms, coaxing her gently.
"Don't worry, Mommy loves you the most."
"More than you love Daddy?"
"Of course, you're Mommy's precious baby."
After coaxing Jessica to sleep, I sat by the bed gently patting her back until she was sound asleep, then carefully got up to leave.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw Jason leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.
He squinted his eyes, staring at me with a dangerous look.
My heart pounded, and I instinctively shrank back, "What are you doing?"
Jason moved closer step by step, his tall figure's shadow enveloping me.
His hand touched my face, slowly moving down, his fingertips sliding across my neck.
I couldn't help but shiver, my heart racing embarrassingly fast.
Just when I was worried Jason might do something right here, he suddenly wrapped his arm around my waist and led me toward the master bedroom.
He was being surprisingly well-behaved.
The moment this thought crossed my mind, as the bedroom door closed, he instantly revealed his true colors.
Jason pressed me against the door, his hot body close to mine.
"Love Jessica the most?"
I opened my mouth, "You heard that?"
"Not only did I hear that, I also heard you say Jessica is your most beloved precious baby."
I nodded, "Of course, Jessica is my child, naturally she's my precious baby."
"What about me?"
Jason asked while leaning down closer.
His eyes were dangerous, staring straight at me.
I spineless shrank my neck and said quietly, "You're also my precious baby."
Jason's hot fingers lingered on my skin, "She's your most beloved."
I quickly added, "You are too! You two are tied, both my most beloved precious babies! Can't rank them!"
"Really?"
"Of course!"
A smile played at Jason's lips as he swept me up in his arms, "Then now accompany your precious baby to sleep."
Thinking of Jessica's hurt expression, I actively wrapped my arms around Jason's neck and kissed him hard on the lips.
"Baby, let's take a break tonight, okay? I'm so tired, I just want to get a good night's sleep."
Jason put me on the bed, his body pressing down, his lingering kisses instantly taking my breath away.
Flames ignited inside me, threatening to spread.
With his familiar scent filling my nose, I thought hazily, maybe having sex once wouldn't be bad?
Suddenly the weight lifted from my body.
I opened my eyes in confusion to see Jason quickly get off the bed and rush to the bathroom.
I stared blankly at the ceiling, taking deep breaths, trying my best to calm the emotions Jason had stirred up.
But I was really tired today.
Before long, I drifted off to sleep, not even knowing when Jason came back.
The next day I woke up early for once and went to the kitchen to make breakfast.
When Jessica came downstairs, she was still a bit listless at first, but when she saw I had made breakfast, her eyes lit up and she immediately ran down cheering!
"Yay! Mommy made breakfast today!"
Jessica sat at the dining table eating heartily, even getting egg pancake crumbs on her little face.
Jason sat across from her, looking at her with disdain, "Eat slower, no one's competing with you."
Jessica looked at Jason resentfully with food in her mouth.
"Daddy, you're competing with me."
Jason raised an eyebrow and took the half pancake left on Jessica's plate.
Under Jessica's angry, anxious gaze, Jason stuffed the pancake into his mouth in one bite.
"You!"
Jessica's eyes immediately reddened. Seeing she was about to cry, I quickly gave her mine.
"Eat Mommy's, Mommy's full."
Only then did Jessica's mood improve.
"Thank you Mommy! Mommy loves me the most, and I love Mommy too!"
After saying this, she didn't forget to look at Jason triumphantly.
Jason scoffed, "Saying 'love' all day long, don't you find it cheesy?"
I silently teased him in my mind.
When it comes to being cheesy, who can beat you?
But Jessica didn't think there was anything wrong with herself. She said righteously, "So what? Mommy said love should be said out loud!"
Jason snorted coldly.
He was about to say something else when I shot him a cold look, signaling him to stop.
Such a grown man, yet still competing with a child for attention.
How childish could he be?
After breakfast, Jason went to the office and dropped Jessica off at kindergarten on the way.
I was planning to go back upstairs to continue organizing my sunroom when I suddenly received a call from Luke.
"Sue, Mom's been saying she doesn't feel well lately. Take her to the hospital to get checked out."
