Chapter 119
Brian's voice suddenly rang out.
I looked up and happened to meet Brian's somewhat obscure gaze.
"I haven't finished my work yet. I plan to finish it first," I explained softly.
But Brian frowned slightly, "What about Jessica? You're not going to take care of her?"
"Jessica has her grandmother to look after her. I don't need to worry."
After answering, I was about to continue with my work, but Brian didn't leave. He just stood there in front of my desk.
Although he didn't say anything, his gaze was too strong to ignore.
After about three minutes, I finally couldn't help but speak up, "Mr. Ethan, it's already after work hours. Aren't you going home?"
"I'm staying here with you. Making my assistant work overtime alone isn't something I can do," Brian said while pulling over a chair to sit down.
I couldn't help but complain internally. It's not like he hasn't made me work overtime before, and he never stayed to watch me then.
Besides, being watched by my boss like this, I can't work properly.
I still said helplessly, "Mr. Ethan, why don't you just go home? Having you watch me like this feels really strange."
"You can ignore me, pretend I'm air," Brian replied.
My mouth twitched.
Just then, Brian's phone rang.
He took out his phone, glanced at it, then hung up impatiently.
Soon, the phone rang a second time, and was hung up on directly again.
Then came the third time, the fourth time...
Watching Brian's face grow darker and darker, I could pretty much guess who was calling.
When the phone rang yet again, Brian finally answered with a dark expression.
"What is it?"
Most people in the office had already left, making it especially quiet, so I could clearly hear Elizabeth's voice on the phone.
"Brian, are you off work? I've reserved a table at a Japanese restaurant. Let's go eat together!" Elizabeth's cheerful voice carried a hint of cautious probing.
"I already have plans." Brian refused coldly.
"Who?" Elizabeth immediately became alert, her voice rising considerably, "Is it that bitch Sue? How dare she still try to seduce you, she..."
"If not her, it would be someone else. I don't want to have dinner with you. That's it." Brian's brow furrowed tightly as he hung up directly.
The office suddenly fell into silence.
I studied Brian's expression.
His face was gloomy, his eyes dark.
"Mr. Ethan, actually, you should treat Miss Perez better," I said sincerely.
Brian didn't speak, but I knew he was listening now, so I continued, "Miss Perez has a very good family background. If you two get married, it would only benefit you. Plus, Miss Perez really likes you, which means you can easily get resources from her."
I was being very blunt with these words.
But both Brian and I knew clearly that between him and Elizabeth, it was a business marriage, except that Elizabeth truly liked him.
Thinking of this, I couldn't help but sigh again.
After a moment, Brian finally looked up.
He didn't speak, just took out a cigarette from his pocket, put it between his lips, and lit it.
After a long inhale, Brian asked me in a hoarse voice, "You want me to get married that badly?"
Through the smoke, I couldn't see the expression in his eyes clearly, but I still nodded honestly.
"I hope you can get what you want, succeed in your career, and have a happy family. Miss Perez can give you all of that."
Brian stared at me and asked back, "What if I don't want any of that?"
He opened his mouth, as if he had more to say, but in the end held back.
But I looked at Brian seriously and said with certainty, "That won't happen, Mr. Ethan. You do want it. The fact that you're sitting in this position now is the best proof that you want all of this. I hope neither of us forgets our past."
No one knew better than me how much effort and energy Brian had spent to get to where he is today.
So he couldn't possibly let it go, and I didn't want him to either.
Brian looked at me deeply.
He put out the cigarette, said nothing, and strode away.
When Brian reached the elevator, his voice came faintly.
"I'm free now. Okay, I'll come pick you up."
After I finished work and got off, I went to the supermarket near my apartment to buy some groceries and went home to cook.
Originally, I was going to just make something simple, but then I thought, even if I'm eating alone, I should treat myself better.
Instead of the simple meal I'd planned, I chose to make three dishes for myself.
Just as the dishes were on the table, someone knocked on the door.
The only person who could come to my place at this hour was Jason.
Thinking about how he saved me today, I still got up to open the door.
As soon as I opened the door, I was met with a large bouquet of roses.
"For you," Jason said with a smile, stuffing the roses into my arms.
He blinked, "The last ones got ruined. I chose the wrong place to give you flowers, so today I decided to deliver them to your door personally."
After saying that, without waiting for me to speak, he had already changed his shoes and entered.
Jason's gaze fell on the dining table, "Looks like I came at just the right time."
He went straight to the kitchen to get rice.
I turned to look at his back, then looked down at the flowers, turned around to find a vase, arranged the flowers, and placed them on the coffee table in the living room.
With the fresh flowers, I felt like the whole living room had more life to it.
Jason came out with his rice, and I sat down at the dining table too.
While eating, my gaze kept drifting past Jason to land on that bouquet of flowers.
I couldn't help but recall five years ago.
That day was Valentine's Day, and Jason had also come home holding a large bouquet of roses.
I felt so bad about it then. Valentine's Day flowers were the most expensive.
I couldn't help but scold Jason for wasting money, but he leaned in, first tentatively kissing the corner of my lips, his hot, burning hands pressed tightly against my lower back, leaving me nowhere to escape...
What happened after was like being submerged in a foggy sea, forced to rise and fall with the waves.
Staring at the flowers in front of me, I couldn't help but feel dazed.
My thoughts slowly returned, and my gaze fell back on Jason.
He happened to be looking at me too, and my cheeks involuntarily grew hot.
"What's wrong? Your face is so red." Jason raised an eyebrow, his tone carrying a hint of inquiry, "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing!" Like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, I instantly became agitated.
