Relapse
Relapse
Maya's POV
Jake is breaking.
I feel it through our bond. The hunger exploding. Black veins racing. His mind splitting. Human. Monster. Human. Monster. Faster. Faster. Until he can't tell which is real.
I'm still in the bakery. Phone pressed to my ear. Recording another message. Another plea for forgiveness. Another attempt to save Guardians dying across the country.
But all I feel is Jake dying in the square.
"Maya." Mom touches my arm. "More messages. People are forgiving. You need to keep going."
"Jake's transforming." My voice sounds hollow. Wrong. "Right now. I can feel it."
"Then go." She reaches for the phone. "I'll take over."
"If I go, the broadcasts stop." I stare at the screen. At hundreds of incoming messages. At Guardians healing because victims chose mercy. "If I stay, Jake becomes a monster."
"You can't save everyone." Mom's voice is gentle. Brutal. "Choose."
Through the window I see the square. See Jake fighting three Connection Eaters at once. See black veins covering his arms. His neck. Crawling up his jaw toward his eyes.
See Katherine beside him. Swaying. Barely standing. Still trying.
See Mrs. Rodriguez throwing spells that do nothing.
See Tom on the ground. Blood in the snow. Sarah screaming. Robert dragging her back.
I reach for our bond. Ready to cut Jake's connections. Stop the transformation before it finishes.
Katherine's phone rings.
She fumbles it from her pocket. Nearly drops it. Answers while dodging claws.
"Yes?" Her voice gasps. Broken.
"Katherine Walsh?" A man's voice. I hear it through Jake's connection to her. Through the tangled web linking all of us. "Thomas Richardson."
Katherine stops moving. Just. Stops.
A Connection Eater's claws slash past her face. Miss by inches.
"Mr. Richardson." She's crying. "You called back."
"My wife said I should." He sounds exhausted. Empty. "Said the anger was eating me worse than what you did to my son."
"I killed him." Katherine doesn't fight anymore. Doesn't move. "Nothing changes that."
"No." Pause. Breathing. "But I've been thinking. About Guardian magic. About it corrupting you. Making you think control was help."
Jake's fighting harder now. Desperate. The black veins past his jaw. Reaching for his eyes. For his brain.
I should cut the bond. Should save him. Can't make my hands move.
"My son." Richardson's voice cracks. Breaks. "Before he died. He said something. Said the worst part wasn't the forced feelings. The worst part was knowing you thought you were helping. That you believed controlling him was kindness."
"I did believe that." Katherine's sobbing. Standing in a battlefield. Defenseless. "I was so wrong."
"You were." He breathes heavy. Like the words weigh everything. "But my son. He also said. Right before. He hoped you'd figure it out someday. That you'd understand. That you'd stop hurting people thinking you were helping them."
Silence. Just wind. Just breathing. Just Katherine waiting.
"Did you?" He asks. "Figure it out?"
"Yes." Katherine's whisper barely carries. "Too late. But yes."
"Then." Long pause. Forever pause. "I forgive you. Not because you deserve it. Because my son would want me to. Because this hate is killing me worse than your magic killed him."
Katherine collapses.
Not attacked. Just. Falls. Like puppet strings cut.
Through Jake I feel it. Feel something massive tearing loose in Katherine's body. In her magic. In her soul.
The black veins on her skin. They don't fade.
They burn.
Bright. Sudden. Like paper catching fire. Light exploding from every corrupted line.
But something else burns with them.
Her magic.
I watch it through Jake's eyes. Through his changed vision. See Katherine's golden threads. Her Guardian power built over thirty years. Her connections to thousands of people.
All burning away.
All gone.
She's human. Just human. Powerless. Empty. Cured.
Jake feels it. The hunger inside him stutters. Confused. Scared.
If the cure strips away all magic, what's left?
The Connection Eaters feel it too. They stop attacking. Back away from Katherine lying in the snow. From her empty magical signature. From proof the cure works.
And costs everything.
"No." One speaks. Young. Female. Terrified. "That's not a cure. That's death."
"It's humanity." Katherine pushes herself up. Shaking. No magic to help. No power to heal. Just will. "Real humanity. Not twisted by power."
"We're nothing without magic." Another backs away further. "Nothing."
"We're human." Katherine stands. Wobbling. Weak. "That's enough."
The Connection Eaters stare. At Katherine. At Jake covered in black veins. At the impossible choice.
Stay powerful and become monsters. Or be cured and lose everything special.
They run.
Not attacking. Fleeing. Getting away from what Katherine represents. From the truth they don't want to face.
They disappear down Main Street.
Gone.
The battle just. Stops.
Townspeople stand in bloody snow. Tom sits up. Not dead. Just hurt. Sarah helps Robert. Everyone alive. Everyone staring.
Mrs. Rodriguez lowers her hands. Spells fading.
Jake stands alone in the center. Black veins covering his face. His eyes darkening. Emptying.
He looks at Katherine. At her human, powerless, cured body.
Then at me through the window.
His question burns through the bond. Clear. Desperate. Impossible.
Cure me? Strip away the transformation and all my power? Make me human and nothing else?
My phone explodes with notifications. Guardians across the country. All asking the same thing.
"Is it true? Does the cure remove all magic?"
"Are we choosing between monster or nothing?"
Mom reads over my shoulder. Goes pale. "They're panicking. Guardians everywhere. They don't want to lose their power."
"They'd rather become monsters?" My voice climbs. "Rather that than be ordinary?"
"They want another cure." Mom shows me the screens. "One that doesn't cost their magic."
"There is no other cure." Katherine's voice carries from the square. Weak. Certain. "I've looked for thirty years. Forgiveness strips the corruption and everything built on it. You can't keep the power that poisoned you."
More messages pour in. Angrier. Desperate.
"This is a trap."
"You want to make us powerless."
"Better to die as Guardians than live as nothing."
My chest tightens. We gave them hope. Offered salvation. They're refusing because it costs too much.
Because being special matters more than being good.
Jake stares at me. Black veins reaching his eyes. Darkness spreading.
Minutes left. Maybe less.
I can cure him. Ask his forgiveness for cutting our bond. Strip away his power and mine. Make us both human. Both powerless. Both safe.
Or keep my magic. Keep fighting. Keep protecting while slowly becoming the thing I'm fighting.
Through the bond, Jake sends one clear thought.
"Cure me. Don't care about power. Just want to be human. Want to be with you. Whatever it costs."
My hands shake. One call. One forgiveness. I can save him.
But the cost. Everything. All of it.
No Guardian magic. No protecting towns. No building connections. No being special.
Just human. Just us.
Is that enough?
My phone explodes again. Different notifications. Urgent.
Los Angeles and Chicago. Changed course.
Not coming to Snow Valley.
Coming to kill every cured Guardian. Eliminate the cure option entirely.
Because if cured Guardians prove you can be happy without power, what excuse is there for keeping it?
Mom reads aloud. "They're calling it Guardian War. Power versus Humanity. They're choosing power."
"How many?" My voice is dead.
"Eighteen from LA. Six from Chicago." Mom's hands shake. "Twenty-four Connection Eaters coming to kill Katherine. Anyone who gets cured."
Katherine hears through Jake. Stands straighter. No magic to strengthen her. Just will.
"Let them come." Her voice steady. "I won't go back. Won't become what I was. Rather die human than live as a monster."
Messages from cured Guardians. The thirty-two who took the cure. Lost their power.
"We're with Katherine."
"We chose humanity."
"We won't go back."
Thirty-two powerless humans against twenty-four Connection Eaters. Against hundreds of Guardians choosing power over goodness.
Jake's eyes go fully black. Transformation completing.
Seconds left.
I open my mouth. Ready to ask his forgiveness. Cure him. Save him.
Mrs. Rodriguez grabs my arm. Iron grip. Eyes wide with terror.
"Don't."
"What? He's transforming. I have to."
"Look at Katherine." She points. "Really look."
I look.
Katherine stands in the square. Cured. Human. Powerless.
Three Connection Eaters that didn't run are circling back. Seeing weakness. Seeing prey. Seeing easy feeding.
She has nothing to defend herself. No magic. No power. No chance.
"Cured Guardians are defenseless." Mrs. Rodriguez's voice shakes. "Against Connection Eaters. Against humans wanting revenge. Against everything. The cure removes protection with the power."
Jake's black eyes find mine. Monster looking through the man I love.
Asking one last time.
Cure me. Make me powerless. Make me vulnerable. Make me unable to protect anything.
Or let me become a monster who can fight. Who can survive what's coming.
The three Connection Eaters reach Katherine.
She doesn't run. Can't run. Has nothing to run with.
Just stands there. Human. Cured. About to die for choosing humanity.
And I have to decide if Jake joins her.
Human and helpless.
Or monster and strong.
The Connection Eaters open their mouths. Reach for Katherine's throat.
