Chapter 53: War Declaration

Jake's POV

Katherine's phone glows with three words that end everything.

They're Connection Eaters now.

Not Guardians coming to argue. Monsters coming to feed. And Maya just broadcast our location to every one of them.

"How long?" My voice comes out steadier than my hands. Years of hockey. Stay calm when the game falls apart.

"New York left six hours ago." Katherine's fingers shake scrolling through tracking data. "Eighteen hour drive. Maybe twelve hours left."

"Los Angeles?" Maya's voice is small. Scared.

"Twenty-two hours. Chicago sixteen." Katherine looks up. "They arrive in waves. New York first with eight Guardians. All transformed."

"Eight." The number sits in my chest. Heavy. "Against who? Us?"

"We can't ask the town to fight." Maya shakes her head hard. "They're families. Children. Not soldiers."

"Then we evacuate everyone." Mom moves toward the door. "Empty the town. Let them have nothing."

"They'll follow." I've felt how Connection Eaters hunt. The pull. The need. "They sense connections. Track them for miles. Evacuating just spreads the feeding ground wider."

"So we stay here and die?" Mom's voice cracks. "That's your plan?"

"We stay and buy time." I move to the window. Look out at Snow Valley sleeping under Christmas lights. At families safe behind locked doors. At golden threads I can see now connecting everyone to everyone. "Maya keeps broadcasting. Keeps curing Guardians. I handle the ones who can't be saved."

"You can't fight eight alone." Maya's beside me now. "Jake, they'll kill you."

"Probably." The word tastes like metal. "But if I don't try, they kill everyone. At least this way the cure keeps spreading."

"I fight too." Mrs. Rodriguez's voice is quiet. Certain. "My magic is old. Probably useless. But I know where to hurt things that shouldn't exist."

"And me." Katherine stands. Still pale. Still recovering. Shouldn't be standing. "I won't hide while you die for my mistakes."

"Not just yours." I look at each of them. "Every Guardian who controlled instead of asked. Who forced instead of offered. We're all paying now."

Mom grips Maya's shoulder. "What do you need?"

"Time." Maya's already pulling out her phone. "More victims willing to forgive. The more we cure before they arrive, the fewer come to kill us."

"Then we buy time." I open the door. Cold hits like a fist. Smells like snow and Christmas and everything about to die. "Katherine, how long exactly?"

She checks her phone. "Eleven hours forty minutes."

"We prepare." I step outside. The street is empty. Peaceful. Doesn't know. "Mrs. Rodriguez, protection spells. Anything that slows them."

"Might not hold." She follows me. Her breath white in the cold. "Connection Eaters are strong. My kitchen magic is weak."

"Doesn't need to hold forever." I scan the street. Looking for positions. Choke points. Anywhere we can make a stand. "Just long enough."

Katherine joins us. Moving slow. Careful. "I know how they hunt. How they coordinate. I can help."

"Good." I point toward the town square. Christmas tree lit up in the center. "We fight there. Open ground. Nowhere to hide. For them or us."

"That's tactically stupid." Katherine's voice is professional. Clinical. Guardian training. "We'll be completely exposed."

"So will they." I start walking. Each step crunching in snow. "And maybe people see. See what we're fighting. See why it matters."

The square is beautiful. Decorations everywhere. Lights twinkling. About to become a graveyard.

"Mrs. Rodriguez here." I point to the bakery side. "Set up protections. Katherine, their weaknesses. What kills them?"

"Severing their stolen connections." Katherine circles the space. "Cut enough threads and they collapse. But it's hard. Dangerous."

"Can you do it?" I ask. "Cut connections?"

"Maybe." She doesn't sound sure. "My magic builds. Doesn't destroy. I've never tried."

"Then I do it." The words come before I think. Before I can stop them. "I was almost one of them. Still have their instincts. Their senses. I can see stolen connections. Maybe cut them."

"No." Maya's voice behind me. She followed us. "If you use those instincts, you might transform again."

"Maybe." I still can't look at her. "But we don't have other weapons."

She spins me around. Strong. Desperate. "I won't watch you become a monster to fight monsters."

"Then don't watch." I meet her eyes. See tears freezing on her cheeks. "Focus on the cure. Save who you can. I'll stop who you can't."

"By becoming what they are?" Her voice breaks completely. "That's not saving. That's dying."

"Then I die." I pull free. Gentle but final. "My choice. And I'm making it."

She stares. Tears falling faster. "I just got you back."

"I know." My chest feels crushed. "But you need time. I'm the only one who can give it to you."

The next hours blur and drag and crawl. Mrs. Rodriguez and Mom draw symbols everywhere. Chanting. The air smells wrong. Like lightning about to strike.

Katherine marks positions. Plans fallback points. Creates strategy from desperation.

Maya broadcasts nonstop. Her voice going hoarse. Begging strangers to forgive strangers. Racing the clock.

Messages flood in. Thousands. More forgiveness than refusal now. The cure is spreading. Working. Just not fast enough.

Eleven hours becomes ten. Nine. Eight.

The sun rises. Pink and gold and beautiful and maybe my last.

Seven. Six. Five.

People wake up. Come outside. See the symbols. The weapons. The fear.

We tell them everything. The truth. What's coming. What we did. What we're trying to fix.

Some pack cars. Leave. Smart.

Some stay. Grab whatever weapons they can find. Kitchen knives. Baseball bats. Hammers. Nothing that will work. But they stay anyway.

Four hours. Three. Two.

Maya's voice cracks. Breaks. Keeps going. Still broadcasting. Still begging. Still trying to save people who tried to kill her.

One hour.

I stand in the square. Katherine on my left. Swaying. Still too weak. Mrs. Rodriguez on my right. Thirty townspeople behind us. Tom from the hardware store. Sarah Chen. Robert Kim. Others. Armed with hope and kitchen tools.

Maya stays at the bakery. Broadcasting. Fighting with words while we fight with everything else.

Through our bond I feel her terror. Her love. Her desperate hope this works.

Thirty minutes.

The protective spells shimmer. Waiting. I can taste them. Like copper and old promises.

Fifteen minutes.

My phone buzzes. Katherine's tracking app showing the New York cars.

Entering Snow Valley now.

I see them coming down Main Street. Eight figures. Walking slow. Casual. Not worried at all.

Their eyes are black holes. Empty. Hungry.

They stop at the square's edge. At Mrs. Rodriguez's shimmering barrier.

The leader steps forward. Woman. Tall. Gray hair. Was probably beautiful once. Now just hollow.

"Jake Winters." Her voice carries easy. "Let us finish your transformation. Make this simple."

"Come try." My voice doesn't shake. Never let them see fear.

She smiles. All teeth. No warmth. "Gladly."

They hit the barrier together.

It holds one second. Two. Then cracks like glass. Shatters. Light exploding everywhere.

They pour through.

I move to meet them. Using instincts I hate. Connection Eater instincts showing me their stolen threads. Where to cut. How to kill.

The first one reaches me. I grab her threads. Can actually feel them. Cold. Slimy. Wrong. I yank hard.

They sever.

She screams. Collapses. Doesn't move.

The others stop. Stare.

Then rush me together.

It's chaos. I'm cutting threads. Dodging. Katherine throwing weak magic. Mrs. Rodriguez chanting. Townspeople swinging bats. Screaming. Dying.

Blood in the snow. Red on white. Christmas colors.

I cut another one's threads. Another. We're holding. Barely.

Then it hits.

The hunger.

It's been quiet since Maya reconnected us. Sleeping. Controlled.

Not anymore.

It explodes through me. Violent. Consuming. Stronger than before.

Black veins race across my skin. Both arms. My chest. My neck. I feel them reaching for my brain.

Through our bond Maya feels it too. Feels me losing.

I'm transforming.

And this time there's no stopping it.

The hunger screams.

Feed. Feed. Feed.

And Maya's connections taste so good.
