Chapter 65 Chapter 65: The Fall of William
At this point, old Mr. Sterling sighed. Keith had expressed his feelings for Selena many times. When he eventually found out the truth, he would likely understand what true suffering was.
"Your mother-in-law has lost her mind, and William's marriage is on the verge of collapse. What goes around comes around."
Selena bowed her head, listening to the old man's lament. Only after he finished did she speak:
"We still don't know who hired the thugs that injured my father and brother."
Old Mr. Sterling nodded, replying: "I'm having someone investigate it. I asked William about it, and it seems he doesn't know anything. It's likely Amelia who masterminded it."
Selena said nothing. The old man's words aligned with her suspicions, but she had no intention of sparing William. After all, the tragedies in her life were caused by him.
Selena placed her hand on the stack of documents on the table and asked:
"Aren't you afraid I will bring down Sterling Group?"
After all, Sterling Group was old Mr. Sterling's life's work. Would he really hand it over to her out of guilt?
Old Mr. Sterling didn't answer, only shook his head with a smile. In truth, he was taking a gamble, hoping Selena would not disappoint him.
Selena took the stack of documents and left the tea room.
She didn't return to the hospital but instead hailed a taxi to Balthazar's private villa, where she secluded herself for the entire afternoon.
When Balthazar returned, he found her curled up in the corner of the bed, her face filled with sorrow and gloom.
He sat down beside her, gently asking:
"Feeling down? Shall I take you out for some fresh air?"
Selena shook her head, looking at Balthazar. After gathering her courage, she finally said:
"Can you help me strike William once again?"
At the mention of her ex-husband's name, Balthazar's expression darkened slightly, but he quickly adjusted his emotions. His personal dislike aside, he would never take it out on her.
Taking a deep breath, he asked:
"I can attack Sterling Group, but I'm not sure how much damage I can do."
"There's no need to take down the whole of Sterling Group. I just want you to target William specifically, steal his luck, and turn him into a useless fool," Selena said, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
Balthazar didn't hesitate and immediately nodded. While he wasn't sure of his odds of taking on all of Sterling Group, he was confident he could crush William alone.
He had already had someone investigate Selena's life with the Sterling family. After learning what she had endured, he could hardly resist the urge to tear this family apart.
Moreover, he hoped that once Selena exacted her revenge, she would stay with him. Her drunken confessions didn't seem like lies—there was a strong possibility she had been someone's mistress for ten years and even had a child. Yet, she had only disappeared for a little over a year, and no one knew where she'd been.
This contradiction reminded him that there were still too many secrets about her. He wasn't sure if he could keep her by his side. What if one day she vanished again? Where would he go to find her?
With the fear of losing Selena gnawing at him, Balthazar fought against William with ruthless ferocity. Whatever project William set his sights on, Balthazar would stop at nothing to snatch it from him.
Even if the projects didn't align with the development of Winning Edge Enterprises, he was determined to ruin them.
After a series of failures, William's reputation within Sterling Group plummeted to a critical level. Just a few days later, a shareholders' meeting was held, during which the senior management proposed removing William from his position and electing a new leader.
Crash!
William smashed objects around his office, cursing those treacherous people.
He had devoted years of his life to Sterling Group. Even if he hadn't achieved great success, he had worked hard. Yet, in his time of need, no one was willing to lend a hand. Instead, they kicked him while he was down, hoping to profit from his downfall. Wasn't life unbearably cruel?
"If you all want to be heartless, don't blame me for being ruthless. Sterling Group is rightfully mine."
The shareholders' meeting proceeded, and William strode in, his face betraying none of the panic of a man about to lose his inheritance.
As soon as William entered, his third uncle, Uncle Arthur, immediately sneered:
"You’re really something, aren’t you? First, you ruin Sterling Group's reputation, and now you’re being disrespectful of everyone’s time. We’ve all been waiting for you for half an hour."
William ignored his uncle’s words, calmly pulled out a chair, and sat down in front of the shareholders.
Seeing this, Uncle Arthur slammed the table and shouted:
"How dare you show such an attitude toward your elders! We were still considering whether to let you keep your position, but forget it now. Get out of Sterling Group."
William looked calmly at the cunning old men before him, a mocking smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
Resting his chin on his hand, he asked:
"So, if you kick me out, who do you plan to put in as CEO? Will it be Uncle Luke’s son or Uncle Arthur’s? I heard both of them were arrested a few days ago for drunk driving. You really think those useless brats can lead Sterling Group?"
Having their sons humiliated, Uncle Arthur and Uncle Luke ground their teeth in anger, but they managed to hold their fury in. Uncle Arthur forced a smile and said:
"You don’t need to worry about that. We’ve already nominated Ms. Kelly to take over your position."
"Ha ha ha..."
William laughed so hard he clutched his stomach, leaning back in his chair. Pointing directly at each of them, he laughed and said:
"I can’t believe you lot are putting a whore in charge as CEO! You’ve all gone mad, ha ha…"
William's face flushed red, and tears of laughter streamed down his cheeks, but he couldn’t stop laughing. His behavior left Uncle Arthur and Uncle Luke red-faced and embarrassed.
