Chapter 318 Names

Chapter 318 Names
But if it's worse than that, we'll help her through it. All of us.

We pull up in front of the Miller's summer home a half hour later.

The place is already swarming with cops.

An officer marches up to me, hand extended. I shake it. "Officer Donavan. We've gone through the house, and we've found filing cabinets full of... transactions," he growls the last word.

Trent's face pales. "Is Olivia's name in there?" he swallows.

Officer Donavan gives a grim nod.

It's a good thing Liam isn't here. I don't think the boy could take any more of this. When I dropped him off at home, he was already dead on his feet and pissed as hell he couldn't help.

"We found a total of 143 female names, many of whom are missing persons cases. Some of them have not happened yet, thank God. The others have buyers we are now getting warrants for," he reports.

143 women were being sold off as sex slaves? I think my head is spinning. Just how far were these guys going to go? And how the hell were they chosen? Was there a pattern, or were they chosen at random?

I know Josie was picked, probably on the first night she was introduced to us. I watched her dance. I wonder if Dad had been assessing her... she'd only been 10 years old!

Trent and I enter the house into a swarm of chaos. Everything looks like it's been torn apart. Trent stands by my side, completely frozen.

He takes in the mess around us, and I swear I see a tear in his eyes. I wonder what memories are messing with his mind right now. I'm sure when he was a kid, his dad was his hero. He was an officer of the law, and now he's a criminal.

I don't know how many memories this is digging up and turning them all to disease in his mind. I cup my hand on his shoulder, squeezing it for support.

The look he gives me is so broken. I'm glad Charlie isn't here. She doesn't need to deal with all of this.

"I know it sucks right now, but I promise, it will get better," I whisper, trying to comfort him in this really difficult situation.

"Thanks," his voice is thick and quiet. "Let's go have a look around."

For the next two hours we go through every room. We open up cupboards and filing cabinets.

Some of what we find are old photos of the family, smiling and enjoying themselves while they are on vacations. They looked like just a normal family, and to the outside world, that is exactly what they were.

Other things we find are missing persons reports. Why the hell they would keep them here with the actual files of the girls is beyond me. Maybe they had some sort of fetish, or some OCD thing in their brain that needed the file to be complete. I have no idea, but it turns my stomach.

By the time we are done, we've found a lot of names and information on all of the missing girls, but nothing that will bring us closer to Olivia.

I turn to Trent, feeling the lingering frustration bubbling off us. "Let's go home. We both need to see our wives, and I've got a baby I want to hold for a bit before we go back out again," I suggest.

Trent gives a tired nod. "Yeah, we need to regroup. Get some sleep, and maybe Liam will be able to tell us if he found anything out at school," he suggests.

"Good plan." Trent has a good head on his shoulders. He'll make a great doctor one day.

We trudge our way back to my car. I am praying we don't end up splattered on the side of the freeway with how tired I am. That would just make my life worse. I need to get home so I can check on my wife and daughter. They don't need me coming home looking like I was scraped off the pavement.

As we are headed back home, I can't help but wonder how Olivia is doing right now. And I'm praying to God, Braxton is not as bad as James was.
