Chapter Sixteen

It’s nearly Ada’s birthday and she has checked a lot of the “big” items off of her list. She has had her first kiss, went on a date, had a make-out session (well multiple sessions), she has made it to second base, lost her virginity, but most importantly for her, she has her first boyfriend. Even though she has marked off much of the things from her list, she hasn’t found herself as focused on what she has or hasn’t done since she and Ewan made each other’s feelings for each other clear; Or since the night she lost her virginity anyway.

Kacey was beyond happy that Ewan and Ada was finally an item. When Ada told her friend, her exact response was, “I told you!” before performing a giddy dance. Ada has never known a person to be so excited about someone else’s news until she met Kacey.

Unlike Kacey, Tanya was not very happy about the pairing. She wasn’t content about her daughter dating, but she was even more displeased that her daughter was dating someone with Ewan’s track record. Pretending to be a strict parent, Tanya promised to endure it as long as her grades didn’t suffer. She threatened, “But as soon as your grades start to fall, then you will no longer see that boy.” Ada agreed to appease her mother, but she knew that it wouldn’t work. It was better to amuse her mother than to start a fight about it.

While her mother showed her displeasure with Ewan, Ada couldn’t have been more ecstatic about her relationship with him. Their study time became a lot more interesting and physical. They spent most of the time making out and occasionally they would go a little further. Sometimes Ada would have Ewan stay the night with her, not for sex, but to keep her company and to make the nightmares go away.

Ada loved being Ewan’s girlfriend, but unfortunately, that meant that everyone at school would actually notice who she was now. At the beginning of the school year, Ada was a nameless face that some people slightly recognized from somewhere; no one had paid enough attention to her to investigate or care. However, now when Ada and Ewan stand next to each other, they knew they were both a part of the incident at the gas station. Unfortunately, this means she now gets a lot of judgmental stares, odd looks, and walks in on hushed whispers. Luckily, this didn’t seem to faze her anymore. None of it affected her like it used to. And when Ewan was around, she didn’t even notice people staring or talking about them.

Ewan had his arm draped around Ada’s shoulders as they walked to their class together. “So what do you want for your birthday?” He questions.

“Nothing.” Ada smiles up at him. “I have everything I want.”

“But you need something on your birthday.” He replied, an idea forming in his mind. “I mean, it’s your birthday.”

“Oh no,” Ada says, staring at him. “I know that look. You’re planning something.” She starts with dread.

Laughing, Ewan responds, “And what if I am?”

“Please don’t.” She pleads. “I really don’t like surprises.”

He smiles back at her, playfully pushing her against a locker. His hands rest on her waist while he looks down into her hazel eyes. “You’ll love this one.” He replies playfully with a mischievous smile before he begins kissing her.

“Good Lord, you two. Get a room!” Kacey demands, rolling her eyes as she walks upon them.

Ada’s face burns red.

“That sounds good. Maybe we should.” Ewan teases, giving Ada a wink.

Ada smiles and slaps his shoulder in response. “What’s up?” She replies, greeting her friend while Ewan wraps his arms around her waist from behind in an embrace.

“Are you two planning on going to the school dance in a couple of weeks?” Kacey begins curiously, fingering the binder she was holding.

“I don’t think we really talked about it,” Ada replies, looking up at Ewan in wonder. Looking back towards Kacey, she states, “Why, what’s going on?”

“Well, Hal asked me to go with him.” She responds slowly. “I was hoping that you two would be coming too.” She continued nervously.

“You’ve never had a problem being alone with him before,” Ada says in confusion.

“I know, I just... I would feel more comfortable with you there.” Kacey replies pleadingly. “I’ve been feeling very awkward around him lately. I like him, but he never makes a move or anything. And I don’t know… I would just feel so much better with you there.”

“Okay, okay,” Ada replies, suppressing a giggle.

“We’ll be there,” Ewan says.

“Thank you!” Kacey exclaims happily.

“I’ll see you two later then,” Ewan tells both girls. Before leaving he gives Ada another kiss.

“You two are truly… Disgusting.” Kacey replies after Ewan left.

“Oh, shut up!” Ada replied laughing. “Since when have you felt awkward around Hal?” Ada questioned.

“I don’t know.” Kacey confided. “I just started getting nervous here and there and then when he asked me to the dance, I was like, ‘Oh, is he gonna do something there?’ Am I expecting too much? Am I asking too much?”

“Kacey, calm down, just breathe,” Ada replied. “Look, maybe you are putting too much thought into all of this. I can tell that he likes you, maybe he’s just a bit shy? Maybe he’s just not one to show his cards first, you know?”

“I guess…”

“Basically, you will probably have to be the one to make the first move.”

“That’s a terrifying thought,” Kacey responded in horror.

Ada giggles. “Imagine how the boys feel.”

The girls continue to walk the hall to their next class while talking about the dance.

“I can’t believe you two hadn’t made plans to go,” Kacey stated, slightly shocked.

“I can’t speak for Ewan, but I honestly hadn’t thought about it.”

“It’s what everyone in the school is talking about!”

“Well, I can’t help that I wasn’t interested.” Ada retorted while waving her hand. “I’ve never been to one before and, to be honest, I never thought about going to one.”

“Even to cross off your list?” Kacey responded half-heartedly.

Ada smiled. “I haven’t thought about that in a while either.” Taking a minute, she finally spoke again. “Okay, yeah. That’s definitely something that should have been on my list.”

“So do you want to go dress shopping after school or do you want to go tomorrow?”

“I can’t tonight or tomorrow. Tonight I have a study date with Ewan and tomorrow my mom is taking me out since she has to work on my birthday. Which you can come along tomorrow with my mom and me if you want; I meant to ask you if you wanted to.” Ada rambled quickly. “You would definitely be doing me a favor so she won’t get on the topic of Ewan.”

“Gee, thanks,” Kacey states sarcastically.

Ada laughs. “I would love for you to come. I just meant you would also be helping me out. It would also be nice to have a girl’s day with you and my mom.”

“Sounds fun,” Kacey replies excitedly.

“So, do you have any idea what Ewan is planning for my birthday?”

Kacey smiles, “No.”

Ada glares at her friend as they enter the classroom. “I know you know something.”

“Maybe I do, maybe I don’t,” Kacey responded nonchalantly.

Ada stares at her with discomfort. “I really hate surprises.”

Kacey laughs. “Oh, I know.”

“Hey! I just got invited to a party by Hal… I know you and Ewan are supposed to be ‘studying,’ but I was wondering if maybe you could come too?” Kacey questions her friend with a pleading voice over the phone.

“Oh… Um…” Ada replies hesitantly. “I’ll have to ask Ewan.”

Ewan looks at Ada curiously.

“Well, go on then,” Kacey replies.

“Kacey wants to know if we want to go to a party,” Ada tells Ewan.

He looks a little disappointed, mostly worried. “If you want to go, we can.”

“Where is it at?” Ada questions, unsure of what to think. Ewan started acting a little strange after this.

“We can all ride together if you like.”

“Okay.. Cool.” Ada replies before hanging up the phone and looking at Ewan. “Well, they’ll be here in a little bit.”

“Okay.” Ewan says, closing his book.

“Do you really want to go?” Ada questions.

“Not really. I don’t exactly want to be around the same people that Hal hangs out with anymore. But I’ll go if you are.”

“What people are they?” Ada asks concerned.

Ewan let out a sigh. “Let’s just say they like to party.”

There was a knock at the door.

“That was fast.” Ada commented with a jump.
