Chapter 136 Xavier proposed
Chapter 136 Xavier proposed
Authors POV.
Both Xavier and Lilian were eating at the dining at his house.
It was unusually quiet.
Xavier kept fingering the cuff of his shirt for the hundredth time. Across from him, Lilian was just finishing her glass of wine, she noticed he seemed off.
"Are you okay?" Lilian asked, her brows knitting together in concern. "You’ve barely touched your food, and you’ve been staring at me like I owe you money."
Xavier laughed nervously.
Then he stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. He walked around to her side of the table and took her hands.
His palms were damp from sweat, and when he looked down at her, she noticed how nervous he looked.
"I’m just... I’m thinking," he said softly, still processing what he was about to say.
Lilian arched a brow, "About?"
She felt really worried, hoping something wasn't wrong.
Xavier took a deep breath, "Ever since I admitted my feelings for you, I've always had this one important question in mind, but I didn't want rush things, or make you feel overwhelmed. But after everything that has happened I don't think there's another perfect time than now...."
Lilian looked puzzled, she didn't understand what he was talking about.
But Xavier suddenly knelt.
Lilian’s breath hitched. She looked down at him, her eyes wide, finally realizing what was happening.
He pulled a small, velvet box from his pocket and opened it.
The ring inside was modest, with a very beautiful perfect cut diamond, that shined elegantly under the light.
"Lilian," Xavier called, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I don’t want to be your boss or just your boyfriend. I want to be completely yours, your husband, and your life partner.... So will you spend the rest of your life with me?"
Lilian's hands went to her mouth, her eyes blurring with sudden, happy tears.
"Yes," she choked out. "Yes, a thousand times, yes."
Xavier instantly felt like he won a lottery. He slipped in the ring, and pulled her closer for a kiss.
..................
They decided to announce and celebrate the engagement at the Graham Estate the following week.
The celebration was filled with music and the laughter of the few people that were invited.
Dandelion was so happy when it was announced, she had insisted on giving a speech.
When it was time for the toast and speech, Dandelion walked to the stage and took the microphone, holding up her glass of wine. She was looking really radiant, in her pregnancy glow.
"To Lilian my forever best friend and Xavier, the man who somehow managed to tame her." Dandy joked with a grin, everyone laughed raising up their glasses too.
Dandy continued her speech, " This relationship started from heated arguments between the boss and his secretary, but with time it developed into this beautiful perfect journey of love. And I'm so proud of you Lilian."
Lilian blew her a kiss from the crowd,
"You know, I've been through enough drama to fill a dozen screenplays. But through it all, Lilian has been my anchor and support. Watching her find a man who cherishes her is one of the greatest gift I could ever ask for."
Dandy turned back to Lilian, her eyes twinkling. "From secretary to fiancée, that's a huge promotion Lily, don't you think so?"
Lilian laughed, as she leaned into Xavier who had a permanent smile on his face.
"It's the best promotion ever," she shot back.
The guests erupted in a mix of cheers and laughed at the exchange between the two friends.
Later, the music slowed, and the bride to be, Lilian, had insisted on practicing her bouquet toss, the ladies in the party gathered for the bouquet toss.
Lilian stepped up, her eyes dancing with mischief. "Dandy, you’re married, so you don’t get to play, this is for the single people!"
"Oh well, I guess I'll just happily observe," Dandelion joked pretending to be sad, stepping aside to lean against Alex’s shoulder.
Lilian smirked, she spun around and tossed the flowers high.
It arched perfectly through the air, but instead of landing in the hands of at least one of the ladies present, it took a surprising bounce off a chandelier and landed, with a soft thud directly in the arms of Nicholas.
The music stopped. Everyone froze.
Suddenly a ripple of laughter went through the room.
"Oh, would you look at that," Lilian shouted, grinning. "Nicholas, you’re next!"
Nicholas held the bouquet as if it were a bag of contaminated waste, his face twisted in horror. "Absolutely not. I’d rather remain single for life. I’m living my best life---no drama, no crying, no pregnant wives, no evil mother-in-laws. I am perfectly fine with my solitude."
Alex scoffed loudly and shook his head at his delusional friend.
"You'll be lonely," Xavier said, from the dance floor.
"No I won't!" Nicholas insisted, holding the bouquet at arm's length.
"Oh my God, Nick why don't you just accept it," Dandelion teased.
Nicholas shook his head stubbornly, "No way!"
As the party continued, Dandelion leaned back against Alex.
Her gaze drifted over the room, settling on Nicholas, who was now awkwardly trying to hand the flowers to a waiter, as if it burned his hands,
"He's going to find his match one day," Alex whispered, his hand sliding over her stomach. "And he's going to be smitten just as much as the rest of us."
"I think you're right," Dandelion giggled.
"By the way Alex, you had better tell Xavier not to mess with my bestie, we plan on burying him if he messes up."Dandy said seriously, even though she was just joking....well partially joking.
Alex laughed at her threat, "You don't have to worry about it my love, Xavier wouldn't dare."
