“So, I heard you’re a doctor?“ Mrs. Helga asked me before taking a sip of tea in front of me.
She took me to a luxurious mansion that wasn’t too far from the city. I wasn’t surprised by what I saw—by how wealthy they are—because I had already seen what the Lavarre family was truly capable of back when Hendeix brought me to Sky Villa.
Besides, my family is rich as well. I just chose not to use our riches because I don’t want to owe gratitude to someone who would use everything just to make you kneel before them. My family is worse, so however severe Hendeix’s family may be, I probably wouldn’t be surprised anymore.
“Yes, Ma’am,” I answered simply.
“Which hospital?”
“I no longer work in any hospital.”
“Why?”
“Personal reasons.”
“Then what keeps you busy now? Squandering my son’s money?”
I smirked. I love how blunt she is. It felt like I was just talking to my own mother. I could already see that this day wouldn’t go well.
“No, Ma’am, but I am planning to. I worked as a volunteer doctor in a medical mission team, but recently I got suspended temporarily, so I am thinking, why not use my husband’s money to buy my own hospital?”
She scoffed and laughed evilly. “I like you! We’ll get along well! That’s the life of a wife—burning our husbands’ money so they won’t be able to find another woman anymore.”
“I believe Hendeix is not that kind of a man,” I defended my husband, which made her give a sarcastic smile.
“How can you be so sure? Oh!” She laughed again. “…Because he’s impotent? Right… my son’s manhood doesn’t rise. How can you handle it? Does he satisfy you in bed?”
I don’t like the things she’s saying about my husband. I feel like she has a deep resentment toward Hendeix to insult him in front of me. If it were just about me, I could endure it, but when it involves another person—especially my husband—that’s a different question.
“Not only in bed but in every place and every position,” I said, playing along with her. Again, she laughed hard, as if I were a comedian and we were both in a sitcom where every time I opened my mouth, she would burst into laughter.
“So are you going to give him a child?”
That was when my words disappeared. It seemed like she was anticipating hearing something from me, but when she noticed that I wasn’t speaking, her smile vanished.
“What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you don’t want to have a child? I’ve heard that women are like that nowadays. They choose not to bear a child. That actually makes sense because a woman’s hormones go through many changes when she gets pregnant and gives birth.”
“We haven’t talked about that yet. We just got married, and we’re both busy with our own lives,” I answered, hoping to change the topic.
“What do you mean by your own lives? When you get yourself into a marriage, both of your worlds will collide. Your world will become his world, and his world will become your world. You can’t be separated. How will you get along if you never meet halfway? Wait… I forgot to ask… did the two of you marry for love or… for show? I know my child.”
I clenched my teeth. How smart was the woman in front of me to notice that right away?
“You don’t love each other, am I right? Or no, you love him, but he doesn’t love you?”
It felt like thousands of knives were stabbing me because of her accusations, made worse by her mocking grin. It was irritating. If she weren’t Hendeix’s mother, I would have already talked back to her rudely, just like I do with my own mother.
“Why can’t you answer? How did you and my son meet? Your marriage was rushed. What is it? Did he sleep with you? Did he get hard for you, so he married you?” she asked one question after another, making my face scowl even more.
“If I were you, I’d be careful with my son. You don’t know him yet. He’s very cunning, a liar, which is why many of his business rivals collapse; that’s also why he has many enemies. From that alone, you’d already wonder why so many people hate him. Hendeix is not a kind person who’s worthy of your love. He’s been cursed with impotence because he doesn’t deserve to multiply, and yet you look so oblivious to him. He might be using you for a greater goal, so be careful, or get annulment papers now before you regret everything.”
I was about to rebut when someone grabbed my forearm. When I looked up, I saw Hendeix stealing one’s thunder.
“What are you doing here?!” Hendeix asked, his jaw tightening. I thought he was talking to his mother, but he turned to look at me instead. I received sharp glares from him.
“I invited her,” Mrs. Helga answered her son.
“Why?” Hendeix asked bluntly.
“Why not? She’s my daughter-in-law after all. Is it wrong for us to have tea once in a while? You know what? I really like her. I love her facial expressions when I’m talking about you.”
“You were talking about me?”
