Chapter 175 Just Keeping It Together

Chapter 175 Just Keeping It Together
Sade

I watched as Rain finally came out of the interrogation room, followed by the lawyer. She looked exhausted, and I rushed forward to wrap her in my arms. I looked over her head at the lawyer, and he had a positive look on his face.

“The video footage they were able to obtain clearly showed a case of self-defense, so no criminal charges, of course, and everything is done. They have the gun. So, she is free to go with nothing further needed.” I nodded.

Thomas had taken Ms. Denison to the house a couple of hours ago. Since she wasn’t the one who pulled the trigger, her interview had been pretty short. With Rain being the one who fought him and pulled the trigger, things were more drawn out.

With my arm wrapped around her, I led her out of the station and to my waiting car. I was anxious to get her home. I also wanted more information about what in the fuck happened today. As far as I knew, not only were we not fighting with anyone right now. She should have been safe. I would be increasing security at the house and assigning her a personal guard from now on.

I knew she was going to be asking some questions, and I had been thinking about the best way to tell her some things and just how much to tell her. Tomilino was old school in that you kept women out of the business. They were kept safe at home. The O’Conners readily included women in their business dealings, which is why Rain had become an enforcer for them.

So, this would be a slippery slope that I would have to traverse with her. She was doing really well, all things considered. I’d been so damn proud of how she’d handled everything today. I was also exceedingly glad that although she didn’t remember her training, her body memory had kicked in and allowed her to handle herself. No doubt that man had thought she was the easier target. I still wanted to know who the fuck he was.

When we got to the house and parked in the garage, I saw some of the security walking the property. I had called while Rain was in that interrogation room, where they wouldn’t allow me to sit with her, and increased the number of guards on the property.

I had also talked to Tomilino about setting up for Rain to have a bodyguard when she left the property. He was checking through the enforcers that we already had available to see if any would be good enough. If not, we’d have to figure out about hiring a new man who was well qualified to guard my family.

I had a hold of her hand, and she was gripping mine. I could tell she was still trying to maintain it, and I could understand that we were about to see the kids, and if she was a mess, they would react to that. I was hoping to be able to get her to open up to me a bit more when we were alone later. I had felt like she was holding something back earlier when she’d told me what happened. Granted, we hadn’t been alone, so that could have something to do with it, but again, it seemed that it could be something serious.

Once we were in the garage, I hurried around and opened her door. When I helped her out, I cupped her face and turned it this way and that. She was developing a few bruises from where she’d hit the parking lot when he tackled her. It was nothing that needed medical attention, and the paramedics had talked to her before I got there. I just got pissed off at seeing the evidence of someone attacking my family and me not being there to protect them.

I pulled her into a hug, and she hugged me back, but then she pulled away. I looked down at her in question, and she gave me a small smile. “Right now isn’t the time; I can’t let go yet.”

I nodded and let her know that I completely understood what she was saying. I would just be here for her, and then when she felt she could, I would hold her while she had her fall apart that she no doubt needed.

We immediately went to the playroom where the nanny had the kids. She was on the floor playing with them, trying to keep them calm and content after having been so upset today. As soon as they saw us, Connor got to his feet and ran to us, and Saoirse crawled quickly, crying even before she reached us.

I scooped up Connor while Rain rushed forward and scooped up Saoirse. She cuddled her close while I rubbed Connor’s back. He buried his head in my neck, but he wasn’t crying. Rain came over and also rubbed his back. Then she leaned forward and kissed his cheek.

It was their dinner time, so we took them to the kitchen. We had a small round breakfast table in here, and it made it more convenient to have the kids set up in here. Rain put Saoirse in her high chair, and Connor had a booster seat. We got their things together, and then while she fed our daughter, I helped Connor.

We gave them both a bath and let them play for a bit. They both very much enjoyed their bath time, but both Rain and I had gotten wet by the time we pulled them out. Once we had them dried off and into their pajamas, we headed to the nursery. Rain sat on the floor with both of them cuddled close and read to them.

Saoirse knocked out first, and I picked her up and tucked her into her crib. Rain got Connor up and laid him in his toddler bed. Then she read him a second story while he just watched her face the whole time. Soon enough, his little eyes closed and he was asleep.

I helped her up off the floor and then, still holding her hand, I took her into our room and shut the door behind us. Then I turned to her and just looked at her face. While she looked back, I could see the tears start to fill her eyes. I opened my arms, and she flung herself against me, and the dam broke. She let out all of the tears and everything she’d been holding back since this morning. I just held her and rocked her gently, letting her get out what she needed to. We still needed to talk about all of this stuff, and I hoped this didn’t throw a wrench in everything.
