Chapter 26 Are You Trying to Poison Me
Harper's hospital room.
Lenora sat by Harper's bedside, deeply focused on the diagnosis.
Xandra stood quietly nearby, waiting.
After a while, Lenora withdrew her hands.
"Your mom's brain has suffered significant trauma, and the nerve damage is severe. But I can try acupuncture to stimulate her nerves and see if we can bring her back."
Xandra hadn't had much hope initially. She'd consulted top doctors both here and abroad, and they all said there wasn't much chance.
But hearing Lenora's words, a glimmer of hope sparked within her.
"Lenora, do you really think my mom could wake up?"
Lenora's expression was serious. "I can only promise to do my best."
Doctors never guarantee anything.
Xandra understood, her eyes welling up a bit. "Thank you, Lenora."
"Why are you being so formal? I'll come by twice a week to do the acupuncture for your mom," Lenora replied.
Xandra reached out and hugged her, her eyes slightly red.
"Lenora, I feel pretty lucky. Even though my family suddenly faced a crisis and I ran into a scumbag, things took an unexpected turn. Not only did I marry a handsome and responsible husband, but I also met you."
Lenora patted her back, teasing, "Sounds like your whirlwind marriage husband is quite the lucky charm."
Xandra sniffled and broke into a smile.
"Seems like it."
If she hadn't met him, she would've been ruined by an old man.
If she hadn't met him, she would've been humiliated by Lucius.
If she hadn't met him, today's debt collectors wouldn't have been handled so perfectly.
He was like an oasis in the desert, rekindling her hope.
The two left the hospital, and Xandra returned to Riverside Estates, feeling a bit excited.
"I'm back!"
"Mommy!"
Three little ones ran over, their big eyes full of concern.
Xandra patted their little heads, feeling warmth in her heart, and signaled them to go play while she went to get some water.
"Xandra, did you solve the problem?" Richard followed her, asking.
"It's resolved."
Xandra took a sip of water and smiled. "Thanks to Ray's boss stepping in to help me today."
What?
Frederick's boss?
Richard asked deliberately, "You mean the head of the Russell Group?"
"No, it was Philip Russell. He seems to be the cousin of the head of the Russell Group," Xandra replied.
So Frederick had Philip step in!
Richard asked casually, "Oh, tell me, how did he help you?"
Xandra briefly recounted what had happened that day.
Richard listened intently, and Charles, who had come over, also perked up his ears.
Hearing Xandra say that Philip had resolved the situation with just a few words and that she had even gained a windfall, Charles frowned slightly, feeling a bit frustrated.
See, even though Philip wasn't the head of the Russell Group, he could easily solve his mommy's problems.
If he had found the head of the Russell Group for his mommy, wouldn't she be able to live without worry in Seaside City?
Why had he been so foolish to find her a poor husband?
After Xandra finished her story, Richard deliberately asked, "Xandra, don't you think Ray is less capable than his boss?"
Xandra shook her head, "How could I? If Ray weren't capable, he wouldn't have earned Mr. Russell's trust. If Mr. Russell didn't trust Ray, he wouldn't have helped me. To put it simply, Mr. Russell helped me because of Ray."
Richard continued to provoke, "You have a point. My grandson is indeed capable, but he doesn't have much money compared to those who can lavishly spend on women. Marrying him means you can only live a simple life."
Hearing this, Xandra replied seriously, "Grandpa, everyone has different tastes. I think Ray is great. I'm not someone who chases after wealth or looks down on the poor. A simple life is true happiness."
She couldn't say that she now only wanted to live peacefully because her heart had been broken by a scumbag, making her lose faith in men.
And for now, she thought this marriage was quite good.
They both got what they needed. If one day her whirlwind marriage husband didn't want to continue, they could part ways amicably.
"Xandra, don't you envy those women who marry into wealthy families? They can live a life of luxury and enjoy endless riches," Richard tried again.
Xandra shook her head, "I don't envy them. If I had to choose, I would prefer a soulmate. Spiritual fulfillment is more important than anything."
Richard's eyes flashed, "So you think women who marry into wealthy families are unhappy?"
Xandra smiled, "I don't know for sure, but as the saying goes, 'Entering a wealthy family is like diving into the sea.' There are many conflicts in wealthy families, not something ordinary people can handle. Living there, constantly scheming against each other, I feel the sense of happiness would be greatly reduced."
Her family had some money, but they were only considered well-off.
Even so, her father's cousins still schemed against each other, let alone wealthy families.
Richard was pleased with Xandra's lack of interest in fame and fortune, but thinking about his grandson's identity made him worry.
She was already a daughter-in-law of a wealthy family and would inevitably face many dirty dealings in the future.
Could she stay by his grandson's side and manage the household well?
Never mind!
Right now, he just wanted Xandra to get pregnant quickly.
He wanted to see the next generation of the Russell family grow up in his lifetime!
Charles stood quietly by, listening to their conversation, his big eyes blinking.
It seemed his mommy was quite satisfied with Raymond?
Then his matchmaking wasn't entirely wrong!
"Chuck, do you need something?"
Xandra turned around to see her son staring at her intently.
"Mommy, did you mean that you like Mr. Flores more than his boss?" Charles asked directly.
Xandra laughed, "Aren't you a bit too young for such talks?"
"Mommy, who do you like?"
"Mommy definitely likes Mr. Flores."
Elizabeth and Margaret ran over, their big eyes sparkling as they looked at her.
Xandra was speechless, changing the subject, "Are you all hungry? Can we start dinner?"
"Mommy, you haven't answered if you like Mr. Flores," Elizabeth and Margaret insisted.
Richard teased, "Do you even need to ask? Of course, your mommy likes Mr. Flores, but she's shy and doesn't want to say it."
"We knew mommy liked Mr. Flores."
"Yeah, because we all like Mr. Flores."
Xandra rolled her eyes.
One old and three young, all infatuated.
---
Night fell.
Frederick returned.
He went to take a shower first.
Richard knocked on the door, carrying a bowl of soup.
"Xandra, I had the maid make this tonic soup this afternoon. Make sure Ray drinks it later."
Xandra quickly took the bowl, "Okay, Grandpa."
She felt a bit guilty.
Men worked hard outside, so women should take care of their husbands at home.
Making tonic soup was something she should have done.
She hadn't even thought of it.
She was really an unqualified wife.
Soon, Frederick came out of the bathroom.
He was still wearing a black robe, drying his wet hair with a towel.
He looked like an alluring man just out of the bath.
Xandra brought the bowl of soup to him.
"Drink this tonic soup first."
Frederick tossed the towel aside, glanced at the bowl, and said in his sexy, low voice.
"Are you trying to poison me?"
