Chapter 177 Successful Development of the Inhibitor
Chapter 177 Successful Development of the Inhibitor
"What's this?"
Monica hesitated to open the box, so she nudged it with her foot, hearing the clinking of bottles and jars inside.
After a moment's thought, she crouched down and opened the box, finding various food containers.
Inside were all sorts of nutritional supplements, everything needed to boost one's health.
Monica frowned. Who could have sent this to her?
She closed the lid without touching anything else on the ground and turned to leave.
But then she noticed a man's silhouette in the corner, the edge of his suit and his shoes giving him away instantly.
It was Brandon.
Monica initially didn't want to engage, but considering the baby she hadn't aborted, and remembering how Brandon, despite his confusion over his first love, had bravely stood up for her, she decided to approach him.
"Why are you sneaking around?" Monica asked as she walked straight up to Brandon.
Brandon, seeing Monica with her hair in a simple ponytail, turned his head awkwardly. "It's nothing, just some leftovers I thought I'd bring over."
"Leftovers? Brandon, you're still as evasive as ever. Did you bring the divorce papers I asked for?"
"Monica, don't push it. I never agreed to divorce you."
"But what about your lover at home?"
"That person is my brother's guest, my mother's guest, and has nothing to do with me."
"Isn't she your ex-girlfriend?"
"You said it yourself, she's an ex. If she became my ex, it means I don't love her anymore. If I loved her, she'd be my current girlfriend."
Monica raised an eyebrow at Brandon's words.
Brandon continued, "She went through something serious at our house. It's only right for us to offer some compensation or support."
"She's a renowned musical theater actress. She needs more exposure and career achievements."
"In that regard, the Robinson family will share our resources to help her become a top-tier performer."
"But she won't be part of my marriage. And Monica, if she had loved me enough back then, she wouldn't have left me."
"Do you think I'm clueless about love?"
"Or do you think any woman who comes back to nibble on my 'green pasture' will find me willing?"
Monica couldn't help but laugh at Brandon's metaphor. "What green pasture? Are you calling her a cow?"
Suddenly, Brandon wrapped his arm around Monica's waist, making her blush.
"Don't do this. People are coming and going at the lab entrance. What does this look like?"
"So what? You're my wife. I can forgive you for your temporary departure during our fights. I know you weren't just punishing me but trying to develop a new drug for your grandfather, right?"
"How did you know?"
Monica was surprised and a bit wary.
"You can trust me with many things. You can share them with me."
"Don't think of me as so unworthy. I'm your husband, and I have the duty and right to protect you, to support you, not to hinder you."
"Even if you work for someone I can't stand, I won't stop you out of spite."
"Because your grandfather is the only family you have left in this world."
"Brandon, why are you suddenly..."
Monica's eyes reddened.
"I've realized that you appear optimistic and strong, but inside, you're sensitive and fragile."
"Your mother's passing hit you hard."
"I haven't played the role of a good husband in this matter."
"I didn't understand your heartbreak, and I didn't consider your feelings in our relationship."
"I didn't stand firmly by your side when you were wronged."
"I've thought a lot during this time. Compared to apologizing or you divorcing me, even if it means lowering my pride, so be it."
"I'm not a king. What's wrong with apologizing?"
"Especially since you're my wife. Apologizing to you doesn't feel shameful."
"Brandon, hearing you say these things today, it feels like we're back to our sweet times."
"Monica, I've always been me. Maybe sometimes my words hurt you, but believe me, I've never loved anyone like I love you. Learning to love someone takes time to grow. Let's not fight anymore, okay? And let's not mention divorce so casually."
Monica nestled into Brandon's embrace, unaware of the eyes watching them from upstairs.
Ethan sipped his tea lightly, then placed the cup on the windowsill, lowering his gaze.
"Mr. Kennedy, aren't you going down? Ms. Evans seems to be getting back together."
Ethan shook his head. "I should be there when she needs me, but I shouldn't interfere when she's happy."
"But Mr. Kennedy, you've never confessed. How do you know it wouldn't work?"
Ethan pointed to the tablet showing the new drug's release date. "My love is enough to present itself. That's enough."
Back at the Evans Villa, Laura was throwing a fit, vowing to teach Monica a lesson.
While Brandon spent the past two months trying to win his wife back, some of the smaller companies under the Evans Company started experiencing losses.
Unable to get money from her parents, Laura sold all her jewelry and bags, finally gathering $50,000. She posted a hit order on the dark web.
Watching the confirmation on her computer screen, Laura grinned sinisterly. "Monica, you've ruined me. This time, I won't be merciful. You will die."
Monica left the lab, chatting and laughing with Brandon.
They rode an electric scooter by the river, enjoying the breeze, and then slowly returned home to cook dinner together, looking like a newlywed couple, sweet as can be.
The new drug development was going smoothly.
Monica had already brought Eugene out of Harmony Sanatorium, making him one of the first to test the new medication.
"Monica, we will succeed."
Kiley stood beside Monica, holding a syringe.
She had just drawn the developed drug, which required 15 consecutive injections to block nerve degeneration and activate the hippocampus.
