Chapter 24 No Return
Wide-eyed, Cassie exclaimed, "Those were 30 million dollar Heart of Ocean necklaces, and you bought them? So, Marc gave you money? How much money do you have?"
Florence blinked, filled with anticipation.
George shrugged, "I have no money. The necklace and the wedding ring were gifts from Marc. I didn't spend a single penny on them."
Florence slapped her thigh, "Oh my god! You casually gave away a 30 million dollar necklace? Are you completely brainless?"
George coldly laughed, "It seems like you have forgotten. You were the one who threw it away."
Florence recalled how she had personally discarded the 30 million dollar jewelry.
If only she could turn back time!
At that moment, Cassie said, "I remember, the woman who took the necklace, you seem to know her. What's her name... Dr. Tudson, right? Can't you retrieve it from her?"
Florence's eyes lit up, "Right, we must get it back."
George shook his head.
He felt too embarrassed to ask.
In addition, he just pretended to be Vivian's boyfriend, and even teased her in the elevator. He couldn't bring himself to say it anymore.
So, he decided to tell a white lie and said, "I went to get it before, but they thought it was just a glass ornament and gave it to a little girl without thinking twice."
"Ah?"
Lily's mouth dropped open in surprise.
Florence let out a heartbreaking cry, "Oh my god! That was a 30 million dollars piece of jewelry! You...you are...asking for trouble! Where is the little girl?"
"I went to look for her...but it has been several days now, right? She's only five years old, she might have threw it away carelessly, and it's lost, we can't find it," George explained.
"Ahhhh!"
Florence went crazy and wished she could slap George to death.
Lily also felt immense heartache, but unlike Florence's greed for money, she said, "Okay, okay, if it's lost, it's lost! After all, we didn’t earned it."
Then she pulled George upstairs.
Florence was annoyed, "Why are you taking him upstairs? He's not allowed up there."
Lily said, "I just want to talk to him for a moment, why are you in such a hurry?"
After entering the room, George looked around.
This was the first time he had set foot in Lily's boudoir since their marriage.
"George, don't blame my mom. That's just how she is, she values money a lot. I don't want your Heart of the Ocean necklace either. It's just that you...well, forget it." Lily paused and spoke earnestly. "I need to go on a business trip tomorrow, there's an exhibition I have to attend. It might take three or four days."
George frowned, "Why does the CEO have to go?"
Lily glared at him with irritation, " “I, as the CEO of this subsidiary, have to personally attend to all matters. It's you, a grown man, who doesn't even know how to help me."
George quickly responded, "Lily, don't worry, I will definitely help you. Even if we lose Fonda's billion-dollar contract, I can still go elsewhere and bring you contracts worth twenty or thirty billion."
Lily furrowed her brows, her gaze turned cold.
"Why do I feel like you're boasting again? One needs to stay grounded and not blindly confident. Favors from Fonda’s Marc are not something easily obtained."
George thought to himself If only you knew that I am Fonda's boss, you wouldn't say such things.
But he couldn't reveal his identity now.
Lily said, "I hope you can think about what to do in the coming days. What does it mean for a man to stay at home all day? I know you have to take care of your mother, but can't we hire a caregiver for her? Either find a job or come help at my company."
George felt a little conflicted.
He was hesitant to let a caregiver take care of his mother.
But under Lily's stern gaze, he reluctantly nodded, "Okay, I will think about it. I'll do my best."
"Good idea."
...
On the next day morning, George drove Lily's car and took her to the airport.
At the airport, several other colleagues joined her, and they went together to Fulee city to attend a building materials exhibition.
George then drove back home.
However, on the way...
He suddenly received a phone call from Vivian "George, come to the hospital quickly, there's something wrong with your mother."
George was shocked "What happened to my mother?"
Vivian's tone was serious "Come here, and I'll explain."
George's heart was in knots, and he hurriedly sped to City One Hospital.
When he arrived, George realized that Mia's condition was very bad just by looking at the vital signs on the monitor. He didn't need Vivian to explain further... He had seen too many cases of comatose patients being treated, and at this moment, his mother was in her final moments.
It was the worst and most helpless outcome.
A patient's life which is about to end is akin to the depletion of oil and the withering of a flame, couldn't be saved no matter what.
"Mom..."
George shouted loudly. Tears burst out, and he threw himself onto Mia, shaking her hard. "Mom, wake up, don't leave. Don't leave..."
He sobbed uncontrollably, like a child.
Vivian felt heartbroken watching this and reached out to pat his shoulder, saying, "George, I did my best, but I'm truly powerless. At most... there's only one more hour."
George, upon hearing this, was filled with even more despair.
He stood up, grabbed Vivian urgently, and said, "Dr. Tudson, your grandfather, your grandfather is a renowned physician in Riverdale. He must be able to save my mother. Call your grandfather quickly!"
Vivian shook her head "My grandfather just left the ward a moment ago; even he... is powerless."
"Ah, ah, ah..."
George painfully pulled his hair and repeatedly hammered his head.
Vivian quickly tried to stop him "George, don't do this."
George immediately clung onto her, hugging her tightly, crying until her shoulder was soaked. At this moment, Vivian deeply understood his pain and hugged him as well, comforting him.
But just then, Florence walked in.
Seeing George and Vivian embracing each other, her nostrils flared, and she immediately rushed over, slapping each of them on the face, one on George's face and one on Vivian's. With an angry expression, she scolded loudly, "Look at you, this pair of scoundrels! I finally caught you, fooling around in broad daylight in the hospital room. Aren't you afraid of divine punishment? Harold, you useless scoundrel, my daughter just went on a business trip, and you're fooling around with women here. Why don't you just die?!"
