Chapter 29
Leonidas continued to look from Celeste to Markus, feeling increasingly uneasy. He was afraid that he had somehow offended them both. "Look, I'm really sorry if I said anything weird," he said, hoping to make things right.
"Are you okay, Markus?" Leonidas asked, his tone gentle and concerned. "It's not about you, really," Markus replied, his voice flat. "Let's just forget about it and focus on what we're here for." He gestured towards the library, indicating that they should move on.
Leonidas hesitated, still feeling uneasy. But he didn't want to make things worse, so he followed Markus into the library. The room was massive, with shelves upon shelves of books. It was like a sea of knowledge, waiting to be explored.
Markus couldn't help but feel a little insecure in the presence of Leonidas. The young king seemed so knowledgeable and self-assured. Meanwhile, Markus felt like he was just a bumbling fool. He tried to hide his discomfort, but Leonidas could see right through him.
"Are you okay?" Leonidas asked, his voice full of concern. He reached out and put his hands on Markus's shoulders, trying to reassure him. But the gesture only made Markus feel more anxious. "Why are you touching me?" he asked, his voice shaking.
Leonidas realized that he didn't need to make a grand statement. He simply needed to be honest and clear about what he wanted. "I'm looking for a woman," he said, his voice a little sheepish. "Someone unique, someone who understands me. I don't know who to turn to for help." He looked at Markus, hoping for some guidance. But Markus just stared back at him, dumbfounded.
The words hung in the air, and Markus felt a surge of anger. He wanted to lash out, to tell Leonidas that he was being ridiculous. But he knew that he had to keep his temper in check. "You want Celeste," he said through gritted teeth. He was afraid that his jealousy was showing, but he couldn't help it.
"But I want you, Markus," Leonidas insisted, his smile growing wider. "I want you to be my confidant, my advisor. You can help me find the perfect wife." He didn't seem to understand the gravity of the situation, or the depth of Markus's feelings for Celeste.
The parakeet landed on Leonidas's shoulder with a gentle thump, and just sat there, looking around curiously. Its bright eyes seemed to take in everything, as if it was soaking up all the tension and emotion in the room. For a moment, the only sound was the soft rustling of its feathers. Then, it let out a quiet chirp.
Markus felt his cheeks flush red with embarrassment. Was Leonidas seriously asking for his permission to marry Celeste? The whole situation was absurd, and he didn't know what to say. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He felt like a deer in headlights, frozen in place.
Leonidas's expression grew somber, and he shifted his weight from one foot to the other, avoiding eye contact with Markus. "I know that there are many women in the kingdom who would be eager to be my wife," he said, his voice soft and hesitant. "But I need more than just someone to fill the role. I need a partner, someone who understands me and can help me lead the kingdom. It's not just about finding someone to marry, it's about finding the right person."
Markus's eyes widened in understanding.
"But there are many women out there waiting for you with open arms."
"I appreciate your optimism, Markus," Leonidas replied, "but I'm not looking for just anyone. I need someone who is compatible with me and can support me as a leader. I don't want to just take the first person who comes along, I want to find the right person." His tone was polite but firm, and he still couldn't bring himself to meet Markus's eyes.
A lightbulb went off in Markus's head. If Leonidas couldn't travel far, he could find a suitable wife in the neighboring kingdom of York's End. It wasn't the most exotic place, but it was close by and had a number of eligible ladies. It was the perfect solution!
"I have an idea," he said, excitement bubbling up inside him. "Why don't we look for a wife in York's End?
Leonidas shifted uncomfortably, not thrilled by the idea of traveling to another kingdom to meet a potential bride. "I only travel when it's absolutely necessary," he said, his voice full of reluctance. "And I can't leave the kingdom unguarded for too long. What if something happened while I was gone?"
Markus pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to find a solution. "This is an important alliance," he said firmly.
Markus was clearly conflicted, but he knew that Leonidas was right. It wouldn't look good for the king to be associated with someone who was banned from another kingdom. "You're right," he said, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "I'll stay here and entertain your guests while you travel to York's End." He tried to sound confident, but he couldn't hide the trepidation in his voice.
Leonidas could sense his friend's unease, and he placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "It'll be all right," he said, his tone gentle.
...
Cedric knew that Markus was being reckless, but he also knew that his friend was determined. He knew he couldn't stop him from going to York's End, no matter how much he tried. "I can't let you go there!" he protested. "It's too dangerous! The god king will kill you!"
Markus was resolute. "I have to do this," he said, his voice steady. "I can't let Leonidas go through with this alliance. I have to stop him."
"What about Celeste?" Cedric asked, his voice full of concern. "You can't just leave her like this!"
Markus put a finger to his lips, signaling for Cedric to be quiet. "I have to do this," he said, his eyes pleading for understanding. "I have to save her."
Cedric was completely mystified. He had no idea what to say or do. "Markus, I...I don't know what to do," he said, at a loss for words.
